  1. Just spoken to my other half and it has just taken him two and a quarter hours to get from Bradford to Keighley. Freezing sleet made the roads crazily slippery and people were abandoning their cars and sliding all over the place trying to get through! I'm happy here in Dijon with my windy drizzle as snow driving really isn't my forté...
  2. Amber warning for North Yorkshire now and I'm over 1000 km away! It's getting colder here though too, so I might get some snow...
  3. There seem to be frequent lightning strikes in the Norfolk direction at the moment...
  4. I woke up this morning here in Dijon to an absolute blizzard. I went back to bed as I wasn't teaching until 1600! The snow turned to rain very quickly and it rained all day. Now just a malign drizzle. The end of the week looks interesting - I fly back to the UK for a brief stay on Saturday - but I think spring will be incoming soon! I can't wait to spend a full year in Limousin...
  5. Limousin, my soon to be home, gets like that too. We had New Year there - hard frost but little snow.
  6. I've just arrived in Paris. A lovely apricot sunset flying in and quite mild too. Heading to Dijon on the train in a short while where it might be a bit colder.
  7. Yep for me too, I'm out tomorrow and back on Saturday!
  8. I've just been looking around and some of the French forecasting sites are progging a big wind event for the end of next week in northern France - one even billing it as a second winter storm. The MO are also hinting at potentially very disturbed weather for the period. Any thoughts...
  9. Been snowing here just about all day, and we got a great fresh burst a short while ago. Been a great day...
  10. Indeed, much more enjoyable than last year's washout. I never thought I'd get to play snowball with my dog, but I just did...I'd be happy now for an early an prolonged Spring!
  11. It snowed heavily here in the last hour, quite difficult getting the car in and out of the driveway. Took doggy up the moor where there was a good 15cms of snow and we had a great snowball game!
  12. Only a couple of centimetres here but nice to see. It was snowing little stars when I was out talking to one of my neighbours a few minutes ago - I love those.
  13. Quite correct indeed. L'Independant is a local newspaper down here, the other is Midi Libre. It has been quite exceptional. Our top gust here in Leucate was 105km/h yesterday, yet the day before we were (along with quite a few others) on the beach and strolling along until after 1600 as the temperature in the shade on our patio was 21c! The wind was so strong that it was difficult to walk but we simply had to go for a dog walk just to experience that amazing sensation. It's a non-destructive wind in the main (the Tramontane from the North) provided you have everything secured, but it is spectacular to feel. Today it is clear, quite still, but much colder and it was into low single figures over night. I have some photos which I will post later from various days. Back up to Limousin in a couple of days, then the UK next weekend, then back to France for me the following weekend. Who knows what meteorological treats lie in store!
  14. We got up to 18c here in Leucate today, but there is a very strong Tramontane. Went to Rivesaltes this afternoon/evening and there was an almost summer like warm wind - I suspect the temperature could have reached 20+ in the city as it is very tempered where we are by the sea. Amazing times...
  15. We're heading down to just outside Perpignan tomorrow for a week, so we'll let you know - we sunbathed on January 1st last year down there and were then nearly blown off the road in a storm at the end of the same day! The other potential issue of interest is the Tramontane for this coming weekend - it looks like being pretty tempestuous as it often is when the setup is like it is further north - watch this space... Here in Limousin we're plagued by low cloud, fog and horizontal drizzle - but we had a gloriously warm day yesterday so we can't complain. Happy to miss out on what the UK has to offer for the time being!
  16. Quite happy to be out of the UK for now by the sound of what's coming! We've had some lovely continental climate winter weather here in Limousin with some great ice formations up in the hills. It's grey and drizzly now though but a promise of something better from tomorrow. We're heading down to Languedoc on Wednesday for a week or so, hoping for a little warmth and something settled. Stay safe for what's coming...
  17. About 2cm in my garden. Very very icy last night as the slush froze...
  18. We had some sleet here this morning and again this afternoon when I took the dog for a walk. Big slushy flakes mixed up in the rain on the windscreen...
  19. Definitely not! I checked on the Eurotunnel website. It's still not too late for them to change...
  20. We paid £75 a month ago for Sunday 28 and the current price is £95. To me this is not too bad for a quick, barf bag free trip across the channel, but I guess it might be expensive for others. Don't worry though, nothing awful will happen. It will the responsibility of the ferry/coach company to sort your relatives out. And remember, we are talking about something that hasn't happened yet and may never happen! There are a couple of scenarios - they will travel normally (but even if there is no storm, sensible anticipation of sea sickness is warranted at this time of year anyway); they will get delayed and have to wait for suitable conditions. Either way travelling is a state of mind as much as anything else, you'd drive yourself mad if you tried to control and plan for everything and you couldn't do it anyway. I hope everything goes well...
  21. Am I allowed to be a party pooper? I don't want snow over the Christmas period. I don't want gales or storms or anything remotely deviant from banal. We like tens of thousands of others are travelling over Christmas and we've been there and had that with the getaway chaos stories. This last year provided some of the grimmest travelling conditions you could have. I've seen too much genuine human misery out of this year in all respects to possibly wish for any more. Peace on earth and in the atmosphere too!
  22. Even this afternoon there were some great CBs over the hills here, backlit by the setting sun...magic. And I heard something like thunder in the distance last night too.
  23. Snowing here now! Just lightly, but snowing...
