  1. Mapantz, further to my post about ground strikes.... When you have lightning like in your video screen grab, do all fork lightning/straight down stuff hit something? Building/tree/pole/pylon? Or do some not make it to ground? Attached my post to wrong picture somehow!! Its meant to be attached to the screen grab of the straight down lightning bolt!! Don't know how this happened, defo had the right one when I wrote this post!!
  2. Temperature in Leicester already up to 27c, anyone reckon we could cop the edge of anything this afternoon?? Admittedly, looks to be heading towards Stoke on Trents direction.... But if it grows wider, possibly a side swipe for the west side of the east Midlands??
  3. Well, I thought this would be a busier place than it is...... Never mind, going back to a post I made earlier this month about lightning strike evidence (ground strikes, not structures, purely common a garden ground strikes) or rather the fact you don't seem to see much evidence of these, say on golf courses, parks, car parks etc. at all. Here are a couple I have found online, I expected to find quite a few, but they seem as rare as jellyfish teeth? And I couldn't find any slab, concrete or tarmac strike evidence... So, are ground strikes really really rare, or they just don't leave evidence? Opinions?
  4. There is a band of what is forecast to be heavy heavy rain moving in from the north west after midnight Friday. Is this likely to be unstable enough to generate any lightning? Or, will it just be very heavy rain? What do you guys think with 36 to 40 hours still to go before it's due to arrive on mainland UK?
  5. Ok, question/s about Lightning Evidence. When you see A bolt of lightning leave a cloud, one that goes straight down, do all of these bolts actually reach the ground/building/tree/other structure...? It's just that on Saturday, there were over 22,000 lightning events (events, rather than strikes) because I don't yet know if all of them actually hit/struck anything.. For example, if a bolt of lightning hits the ground only (let's say grass) on a sports field or park, does it leave a mark? Similarly, if it hit a road (say tarmac or concrete) would it leave visible marks/evidence of it? It's just that you would think that having seen what lightning can do to a building or tree or other structure, the damage is or can be pretty horrendous!! My grandad (bless his soul) was a proper plumber, and I once attended a building with him that had been hit by lightning (early 1970's) and it had completely melted the lead guttering!! I guess, unless you see a structure hit (not a lightning rod) and witness the damage or aftermath, their doesn't seem an awful lot of residual evidence of left from ground/earth surface strikes..? Or, am I not looking in the right places, like you might expect some evidence of strikes on golf courses or parks... Obviously, I have seen fulgarites from beach strikes, but is there a similar trace left in soil or other ground surfaces.... Any comments would be welcome..
  6. You see, the strikes I'm talking about, were nothing like these, they are to craggy, and dirty, the ones I saw were ultra clean, thinner both top and bottom and slightly slanted, not bullet straight down.... Never seen anything like them before....
  7. Definately not a normal Thunderstorm, I haven't heard thunder like that since I was a kid!!! And the lightning, well, I cannot remember seeing CG strikes like that, they just looked different, more powerful, with no branching, no re-strikes, just bam!! Not straight line down, more a slight curve, no steps, incredible..
  8. So, why was yesterdays thunderstorm/s in the afternoon so violent? Something was different? Was it because of the amount of capping over the storm/s area/path it travelled? The amount of available energy? If so, where did the energy originate. Also, why was the whole thing elevated? I thought elevated storms were usually imports, and usually night time storms.. Also, why did all if not most of the CG strikes I saw look different? They weren't the normal tree root system or stepped, but equally, they weren't the straight down strikes with the re strike/flicker types, but more like, well quicker, well defined edges, with no strike -outs to the side. For want of a better description, they looked sharp at top and bottom, slightly fatter in the middle, and seemed quicker strikes, if you know what I mean... Oh, and there also seemed to be constant (in cloud) flickerering strikes, and a constant rolling thunder, with that being regularly punctuated be these CG strikes, with thunder that sounded tremendously loud, like a long line of cannons, say 40+ all in a line and being fired one after another, with only a fraction of a millisecond between each cannon, quite an unbelievable thunderstorm/s!!!!!!
  9. Is it true that CG lightning is more powerful from elevated thunderstorms than surface based ones? The reason being that they have a larger gap to bridge than surface based strikes, so it takes a larger charge? Sure I read that somewhere, and potentially there are more positive strikes as well??
  10. The storms from the Midlands/Wiltshire/Oxfordshire etc are now well ensconced in Denmark!! Been active for over 16 hours.... Kicking off again North Wales/Manchester/Liverpool, and also some small cells kicking off around Kent Coast.... Perhaps it "here we go again!" Hope Leicester is quiet for 5, 6 hrs, need some kip!!
  11. Can't get anything other than a black screen with Arrow!! Won't play. :-(
  12. Some showery stuff moving inland over Cornwall, a small storm in north Wales, a small storm in the Middlesborough area, another at Stanhope, North York's... Maybe not such a quiet night for everyone after all.. Thoughts?
  13. So peeps, what's gonna happen overnight and tomorrow day (Sunday) Are we goind to get anymore fireworks? All seems quite quiet........
  14. Lightning hit one of the floodlight pylons at the Leicester City match today! Knocked it out, but they played on!! Lightning all around and pitch under water and they played on!! Is that responsible from the ref? Should he have taken the players off because of the danger from Lightning?
  15. A lot of sirens heard in Leicester, wouldn't be surprised if a building or two have been hit, that was vicious, quite a few + Lightning strikes I would say....
  16. Is this lot back building ? Just to the west of Cambridge? Looks like a batch of fresh strikes?
  17. Just had a bolt near LCFC, didn't even count to 2 seconds, then it sounded like a line of about 50 big cannons, all being fired one after the other!! Then the rolling echoes as it bounces around the structures and low cloud, incredible! I think this was also a + strike, CG, no branching, thin at top and bottom, fatter in the middle, no secondary pulsing, scared me to death!!!! Not sure if they've took the players off yet, I know I would of!!!!
  18. Is it my imagination, or is it all gonna merge into a single cell ?? Eeeeeeeek!!!
  19. Leicester City is just behind those flats, no thunder heard now (distant) for 10 minutes, just spit spotting rain now as well....
  20. Are you under one of the main cells? Don't you get scared of the lightning AJP?
  21. The 2 leading storms seem to be dying off as they go north east, the 2nd 2 seem to be still invigorating, and the storm furthest west, is doing a right turn!!!! (See second grab for right turn)
  22. Hmmm, looks like Leicester to miss the main cells.... Although the areas surrounding the main heads, seem to be filling in with thundery rain/sporadic scud lightning....
  23. The Thunderstorm Cake. Hot Oven Gallons Of Moisture Tons Of CAPE 10 Tablespoons Of Lift Or Wind Convergence Cook On High Oven For 2 Hours Hail/Rain To Taste! Am I missing any ingredients, or is there a better reciepe? Voila!!
