BBC going "perhaps wintry element to higher ground as front moves East tonight" not sure where they are getting that from though
Slightly to the west of you guys but we had sleet before the rain tonight at low levels
-
Raining now, but I'm convinced it was preceded by some sleet. Temp on the up with the rain passing through

Haha. Will be plenty of chopping and changing over next few days definately. if it is a m4 corridor event again, always good hear as we are 28 miles North of it lol
I think there's a channel between the M4 and M40 , where I live, which is totally unremarkable apart from cold

Been a lot windier here than I'd expected. Had a good post xmas clear out of crap, placed it by the bins and some has ended up annoying my neighbours. Oooppss!

Really beefy showers all afternoon, hail mixed in. The water is pouring down off the moors.
Can't give any technical detail I'm afraid. I asked santa for a weather station for Christmas but he got me an iMac instead, so I'm really not complaining. Trouble is my birthday isn't until July.
I got a weather station from Santa. Probably doesn't qualify me to comment on the MOD thread though !

Well I for one am glad that the MOD crew didn't have a wipe out effect on Ian. It has the ability to make many a good poster, pick up and walk.
now us folk in here are a lot more pleasant and seek to learn from those that can teach. Looks set fair for some more damp stuff over the weekend. Got to get out and scrub the concrete patio, it's green and slippery already this season.
*Puts away snow boots .Again*

Bear in mind much yet to be established re developments next week, despite some weirdly hysterical/quasi-suicidal remarks otherwise. We continue to expect marked model swings in near-term. Importantly, note some incipient EC support for the UKMO assessment from this morning, which suggested potential MJO-driven shift could appear now away from Atlantic to Scandinavian blocking. This early notion *may* yet have legs. Neither EC32 nor GloSea5 strongly assist us here: given (interestingly) mixed/indeterminate signals (or effectively none at all, in a very vacant-looking set of EC32 parameters by later Jan!), which is in stark contrast to their more bullish prognoses across the winter weeks already past.
Cheers for now.
Edit: Clusters 1+2 of 12z EC 500hPa T+360 herein to illustrate UKMO rationale
Thank you for a techy post which is neither patronising nor hysterical!!

Frosty start here too. Scraped the car and crucnchy grass underfoot, though temp didn't fall below freezing according to MetO. Now bright and sunny after a sharp shower 8C. I personally would take this as winter!!

Air Frost Klaxon ** reached -0.1c here**
Does that mean Oxfordshire can declare "The Cold Snap" officially open?

0.7c. Creeping down slowly. 2nd air frost of the year to come?
Hovering just above zero down the road here. It's been steadily getting colder through the week. Looks like we're gradually cooling down rather than getting a sudden cold snap.

I dip into the mod thread from time to time. I posted a couple of days back I had a gut feeling the weather would turn more seasonal from next Monday and was told to go away and collect facts which was amusing!! Lots of informed chat there, but lots way over my head and sadly a couple of really pompous people who still get it wrong despite access to the very latest tech but zero humility!Looking forward to getting the fur coats out. The snow boots are staying in the cupboard for now but I've got a sack of salt in which has probably scuppered any chance of snow!

Post are having to be hidden again, Just sensible/friendly 'Model Discussion' please in here otherwise your post will go missing, There are banter/winter threads open. Please back up post's with charts/evidence as 100's come on here for valuable information. .
Thanks.
OT...but thanks for keeping the discussion flowing. As an amateur. I'd never dare contribute to this thread, but am really interested in learning how forecasts are made (and any chance of white stuff). It's really off putting to have to wade through too much irrelevance , so from my pov, the modding is much appreciated! (Creepy post over. As you were ppl)

It was a rather calm and quiet day, until the heavens opened at 3pm for 20 minutes, torrential rain from a cell which seemed to just come out of nowhere to the SW of Oxford, slow moving aswell.
Very local! Missed me!! Been a fairly pleasant day tbh. Cool, light winds and dry. Sunrise and sunset both had birds twittering. Lovely change from the showers and winds of late.

CN building since I left Swindon Ewards. Starting to look threatening

Travelling back from Penzance to Oxfordshire. Cooler than of late. Gusty showers 17/38mph 9C when we left. Showers look as if they'll follow us east throughout the day!

The ten day forecasts on bbc and here aren't convinced anything sinister is brewing. That should help reassure you

It's a week away, if it shows the same this time next week then perhaps treat with caution, chances are it'll downgrade and it will be just another gfs dartboard low on laughing gas.
We've seen similar predictions at a week out already this winter and each one has passed us safely. The attention seems to be on a possible cold snap now which will hopefully be calmer. Looking at the bbc 10 day forecast, there doesn't seem to anything too worrying on the horizon. (Thank goodness). Just remember there are lots of people on here who are excited by extreme weather and will focus on the possibility,no matter how small

Pulses of heavy rain here too. Working at this time of night I'm not happy, in fact I'm quite sad
