Hurricane Ophelia
Frosty hollows replied to Jo Farrow's topic in Hurricanes, Cyclones and Extreme weather worldwide
Looks like the strongest winds will be in SE ireland tomorrow. Am very worried for family in Waterford (family in Limerick and Kerry are fairly used to stormy weather and are in sheltered locations). My brother lives on the side of a hill just outside Waterford facing south. Stay safe people. -
Hurricane Ophelia

It was the sting jet that caused most damage in a relatively small area. I remember struggling with my 9 mile journey to work to get in and colleagues who'd come in from the west of London and Berkshire hadn't realised what an event the night had been -

Agreed. This is potentially a life threatening event. Wonderful to watch from afar but very very serious for those in the thick of it. I, for one ,would like it just to clip a sparsely populated area of Western Ireland where everyone is safe and bunkered down so we can still admire the beauty of Ophelia relatively close. I have no desire to see mass destruction and potential casualties. -

Nice summary of Ophelia's origins and what makes her so unique. Easy to read for the less techy (like me) https://www.popsci.com/hurricane-ophelia-british-isles?src=SOC&dom=fb -

Much as I love the weather ( and I'm fascinated by Ophelia because of her unusual track) I can recall all too clearly events of 30 years ago and am not desperately keen on experiencing them first hand. Nor am I terribly keen on my family in S. Ireland experiencing them first hand. I love to watch events like this from afar, but I've no desire to 'bring it on' when it comes to hurricane force winds. You're not alone! -

Still waiting for this barbeque summer they 'predicted' earlier in the year -

Met Eireann don't seem worried atm. They have a warning out for coastal gales today tho. -
Hurricane Maria

I'm no expert, but I'd hazard a guess the lack of early warnings from meto, etc means that it's expected the cold atlantic will sap her power even with a strong jet? -
3 degrees right here right now

Just been to the gym and noticed lots of debris on the ground. My daughters trike and a couple of garden chairs blew over because I left them in the middle of the garden not expecting significant gusts. Garden gate had also blown open. Still those who experienced Hurrican Irma are probably laughing at us and our high winds!

cardiff had sustained winds of 40mph for a while and gusts of 60, so it would have been a lot windier in coastal areas. The warning was perfectly justified I think even if the exact location of the strongest gusts wasn't quite expected. Fortunately the worst of the winds were in the early hours with little traffic about. Find the Heathrow gust hard to believe though. It's 45 minutes from me and we only managed an occasional 40s gust

I'm staying in the Ribble Valley. Woke up to a heavy shower and a clap of thunder.Skies look murky rather than organised though. Rain looks very slow moving -

No not really. Bands of patchy disorganised rain throughout the evening and fog this morning. Feeling much fresher -
