  1. Might be clutching at straws here , but I'm sure 1947 had a very mild spell up to around the 14th , and then it threw it's sucker punch.
  2. Probably because most of us get sick and tired of the mind numbing drab mediocrity of our insidious climate , and are desperate for something remotely seasonal , be that Summer or Winter.
  3. We had a scattering of something, not sure if it was snow or icing suger, after all the build up , pretty pathetic really, not overly cold either, there again going by the female weather presenter s enthusiastic trumpeting of 10 degrees for here tomorrow you would think that we had just emerged from a 47 winter
  4. Another days money down the pan thanks to the poxy rain, oh well at least it's mild eh
  5. Cracking pics , that sort of weather is like rocking horse s....t in this god forsaken island
  6. Speaking as someone who earns their living by working outside, I can honestly say that either cold , and dry , or warm and dry does me fine, it's the poxy incessant rain that does my head in. A continental climate would suit me down to the ground. .
  7. Sounds good to me, there again, I reckon this country would go into melt down at just a fraction of what you're enjoying at the moment.
  8. It's certainly not much fun trying to play Bass in finger less gloves outside in temps of 0 /-1 as I found out just before Christmas Luckily it was only a half hour set, just as well really.
  9. You just reminded me ,I need to get some more blood pressure tablets, not sure if thee old ticker can stand much more, I've already had one heart attack
  10. Living on the Somerset/ Wiltshire border doesn't help much either, a good deal of the crap off of the Atlantic passes overhead on a regular basis. Maybe retirement to East Anglia is an option, a lot more settled .
  11. Sometimes I think that it's the sheer mediocrity of our climate that really gets to me. There is pretty much s..d all to look forward to, Summer and Winter. At least on the continent they get largely decent summers and spells of good winter weather .
  12. I was living in Cheddar then, all the roads out were blocked. I can remember a real biting east wind.
  13. 38 years ago tonight was the New Years Eve blizzard of 78, here's hoping the youngsters can have a little taste this year of what I used to enjoy .
  14. This time last year people would have bitten your arm off for what's on offer at the moment.
  15. Merry Christmas to all, Just to say a big thank you to all the knowledgeable contributors on here. Like a lot of people my understanding of the charts etc has been greatly enhanced by you all . Her'es to a snowy blocked New Year.
  16. I for one certainly hope that the Atlantic doesn't show it's ugly mug for too long, it becomes almost impossible to get out and earn a living when it's raining for weeks on end
  17. Beats me how anyone can write off two months ahead, when the pro's struggle to get it right from one week to the next
  18. To be honest I would bite your arm off for the set up that we had a week or so ago, sunny high pressure , and frosty nights. This putrid dross i s really starting to get on my nerves. If I was 20 years younger I would do my best to emigrate to Canada, hot summers and cold winters. lovely.
  19. This is one of those occasions where technology can be a curse , as well as a friend. Not so many years ago we had to wait until Sunday lunchtime for the Country file forecast and not have a daily blow ,by blow account . I do hope though the youngsters get a good helping of snow this year, maybe something akin to what we experienced in the 60's -80's. Even at my age of 56 I still enjoy a good whiteout, the last few days have been great as well, frosty and clear it's put me behind on my building work, but who cares.
  20. I've seen it a few times, New Years Eve 78 , was a notable blizzard down here , a raw N/E wind all day. The snow started in the early evening , just as we were going out to the Kings Head in Cheddar. When we came out about 1.am it was blowing a blizzard. New road from Axbridge into Cheddar was a corridor of snow where the diggers from Batts Coombe Quarry had piled it up. Feb 78 was a good one as well, as was Jan 82.
  21. I was living in Shipham then, I can just about recall seeing the drifts. I can remember Dad saying that they dug from Longbottom up to Charterhouse,by hand.
  22. Small fires in the woodburner now , just to take the chill off the room.
  23. You can't blame people for being a tad pessimistic, as we are so sanctimoniously reminded when a cold spell fails to materialize "We are a maritime climate" and in my book that holds true for Summer as well as winter, especially here in the South West where we are further away from a continental influence, and seem to get every piece of s....t that the Atlantic wants to throw at us.
  24. You're probably right Knocker , seeing as the Industrial Revolution was around the 1830/40s a lot of crud has gone into the atmosphere in the last 170 odd years. What interests me though is how science explains the causes of the Medieval warming period of approx 1200/1500 which was then followed by the Little Ice age of 1500/early 1840s , obviously there was.nt the CO2 in the atmosphere during the Middle Ages.
