1. Congratulations on the offers Nick! Good luck for all the work and exams ahead!
2. Cheers mate. I read in the UCAS booklet that if our application is in before January 15th 2010, then replies will be received by May 07th 2010. Could be a long wait!
3.
Good luck! Still had only the one offer, no worries yet though! Do the immature and mature cancel each other out?
One might over-eide the other! Had my first reply today, an unconditional offer from the University of Central Lancashire so I definitely have a place at a university next year now regardless of the other replies. Have you had any more offers Nick?
4. Nice one Nick! I have completed my form now and sent it off, so the waiting game for me too! Feels strange knowing I am going to be an immature mature student!
5. http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rtavn369.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rtavn429.html The way things are shaping up I wouldn't be surprised to see gusts in excess of 80MPH on Saturday morning for the exposed areas of the southwest. The potential is there for some severe conditions.
6. Thanks Ian. A good and realistic forecast which I would find it hard to disagree with at the moment. I certainly do think we could well be in for a mild winter. I'm not a fan of the "christmas pudding" phrase, but as you say, the facts and figures since 1987 are there for all to see. I'm tending to keep an open mind about the future after last winter and I think it is premature to classify last year as a one off. It may well turn out to be, but only time will tell.
7. I'm still trying to narrow them down, but at the moment I have a shortlist of Loughborough, Leicester, Northampton, UEA, Plymouth, Aberystwyth and perhaps Reading. I am hoping to study Geography or Environmental Science.
8. Good luck Nick, and others who are applying. I'm currently going through the UCAS application myself hoping to enter uni next year as a mature student, talk about a long winded process!
9. I have to say this looks like an excellent addition to the Met Office website: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/invent/pwsviewer/index.html'>http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/invent/pwsviewer/index.html I for one am looking forward to seeing some of the Met Office's future plans showcased! You can read all about it here: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/invent/
10. Absolutely, I have no doubt whatsoever that opinions would be very different if the Met Office were suggesting a cold winter! Although, having said that, it would probably lead to even more calls for the reasoning!
11. A superb post, and nail well and truly hit on the head. Anyone expecting more than what the Met Office have issued today at this stage of procedings really need to take a step back and get a bit of reality into their lives. I would also advise people to read the paragraph at the bottom of the page: So basically this is just a precursor to the main forecast, and I suspect reasoning, etc. may well be included in the main forecast. But for now, they explain in this link: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/science/creating/monthsahead/seasonal/2009/winter_background.html
12. Your best bet: http://www.netweather.tv/forum/forum/139-storm-chase-usa-2010/
13. Yet another stunning day here with virtually unbroken sunshine all day. It was a chilly start (5.8C), but we made a high of 20.1C. The drought continues.
14. If you cared to read my original post properly, you would see that I am not saying that they predict mild winters because of a personal vendetta against those who like cold. I'd bet that some "coldies" (i.e. other people, not me) do think that though, certainly when you read some of the posts about Met Office forecasts. Honestly, some people need to loosen up a bit, especially with the silly season on the horizon!
15. The voice of reason! I think some people think the Met Office forecast mild just to spite them because they like cold, even though for the majority of people in the country, a mild winter would be most welcome!
16. I'm glad this thread has been started, I don't think people realise how dry it has been this summer. Apart from July, when we had 221% of our average rainfall, 6 of the last 7 months have been drier than normal, including: June: 46% of average rainfall August: 37% September so far: 4% Everything is dying out there, grass (I know it will come back eventually), trees and plants. Its like being in the Middle East with dust and dirt everywhere and a very dry, barren landscape.
17. The 12z GFS progs some heavy rain for tomorrow night over central/southern England: http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs333.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs363.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs393.html Some small amounts of cape/lifted index to play with: http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs336.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs366.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs396.html Sunday looks more encouraging for the southeast: http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs481.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs483.html http://www.wzkarten.de/pics/Rmgfs486.html
18. I know how you feel Mick. I've never experienced a white Christmas in my 30 years here - I think 1981 had snow on the ground, but as I was only 2 I wouldn't remember - it would be nice just to see snow for one year, but I'm not holding my breath!
19. By the time we get to December, our chance of a white Christmas will be down to 1% at this rate!
20. No heating on here, and I doubt it will be until December at the earliest - and later still if a potential mild winter comes to fruitition. At the moment I am sat here with the windows open and a nice breeze coming in.
21. After a cloudy and very warm start to the day (17C at 06:00!), its turned into a hot and sunny day, with a high of 28.3C. Will this summer ever end?!
22. I agree with you 100% Cookie. A huge loss to the forum, and its a shame that the minority ruined it for the majority. I don't blame Coastie one bit though for packing it in. Back on topic, a good read, thanks Pit for the link.
23. A very warm summer, and apart from July, it was very dry too. The last six weeks here have seen some of the warmest and driest summer weather for many years, and we currently have trees shedding their leaves because of the drought, and the grass has burnt up. A classic BBQ summer as forecast by the Met Office for this part of the world anyway.
