  1. I remember Atlantic 252 you've got it the wrong way round the sun is on south facing rooms all day, so in June we're talking around 9:30pm that it's still there. That's not nice to cool down from given how early the sun rises then. North facing rooms will barely get any sun on them at all so will definitely be cooler. So south facing rooms are definitely the worst as you get the sun on them almost all day. 2nd worst is rooms that have a more westerly component especially SW and W as they get the afternoon sun. The former gets it from late morning. It's the solar heating that heats rooms up and that's correlated to which direction the room is facing.
  2. Fen Wolf that's a brilliant reply yeah I think about the zoo thing too like they might be observing us, seeing our development. I don't usually delve often into space conversations with people, especially not with people I know they would think I'm going mad lol. I couldn't hold a conversation about physics and other things like that. My natural habitat is hairdressing and related stuff! haha. But for whatever reason this subject has always intrigued me. What's that saying "there's a whole other world out there". I hope people start to think about it more as well. And other people are free to believe what they want too.
  3. cheshireoak yeah my bedroom is west facing so is roasting in the summer if the sun is out all afternoon. Even a few days in the low 20s can send it into the mid to upper 20s in there. Other bedroom is east facing so a bit cooler in summer but colder in the winter. Generally I prefer the west facing one as it's rarely boiling in there for too long and stays ok in the winter with a low bar on the radiator. So in general for comfort levels the west facing one is better overall through the year for me.
  4. Fen Wolf Yeah I don't think were as advanced as we think we are. Sure we've moved away from more primitive living in every way but medicine still isn't amazing either, improved for sure but there's a lot that we still don't understand about our bodies, how they dysfunction, how they break down nor how to cure more complex diseases that are connected to all that and how to fully rejuvenate our bodies, organs and everything else to perhaps live well into our 100s without too much mobility problems. Maybe we will........in a few hundred years. At the moment it's very very slow progress, but it's still progressing non the less, it's just we still don't understand or know enough yet. Humans are perhaps just not clever enough? we may think we are... but are we? we can only compare ourselves to other animals on the planet and we are streets ahead of them, whereas other more intelligent civilisations, should they exist in the universe, could've cracked lots of stuff in tech (things that are way over our heads) and also in medicine, should they be anything like us, physically that is. They could put us in our place so to speak.
  5. cheshireoak A cold March is fine and not too late for something notable just as long as it warms up in April. It'll never be proper warm throughout April it's still a bit early with the lag effect but I'd think by then most people want *some* days around 20c+ where you can sit out for a bit in the strengthening sun with friends/family, me one of them. It's normally happens most years so not an unrealistic expectation.
  6. Day 10 Yep March can certainly deliver. This was the mini beast on 18th March 2018 where I used to live. What a bitter day that was. Most of the snow blown off roofs, notice the little snow drift on the roof on the first pic with a wave like pattern. My back garden was a bit more sheltered from the wind.
  7. damianslaw benign and mind numbing. Ah well at least the sun has decided to show itself for once. Hopefully after tomorrow the heating shouldn't be used as much with milder temps. Although mild doesn't tend to warm buildings up naturally until into March in general. Sun needs to be stronger.
  8. East Lancs Rain funny thing is where I am in Manchester fog is pretty rare and it's a polluted suburb let me tell ya, you can sometimes smell it as you leave the house. Numerous busy main A and B roads, M60 that cuts through it too. South and west Manchester gets a lot more fog than here with them being even lower down. I'm in a funny place, below the snow but above the fog. Although it is a frost pocket due to cold spilling down off the Pennines.
  9. My cousin lives in Shetland and locals say they've had a decent and snowy winter this year. Quite a bit of snow cover right down to sea level. That does seem to be the case north of Inverness it would seem.
  10. Joe Snow It was amazing, back then I lived in Droylsden and nearby there's a bit of the town called Littlemoss with huge open fields with a couple of farms on it and the drifts were blowing onto the road (Lumb Lane) from the open fields and blocking it temporarily before the council cleared it with ploughs. If we're to see something similar we will have to see the charts change very soon as I remember back then it was around the 12th or 13th of Feb when things started to get suddenly a lot more interesting as the models were starting to toy with the idea of a beast late in the output.
  11. Rush2019 Virtual hugs to you Rush. As you know my mum has cancer and she's due to start treatment soon, it got delayed unfortunately due to her picking up flu and then a chest infection but she's slowly recovering from them now. She's spent time in Christies because of all that trying to get better first and not been out for a few weeks. Really worrying time, just got to keep hoping for the best outcome that's all we can do with anyone going through cancer and their friends and family who love them.
  12. East Lancs Rain yeah I've been following his videos for years he does some good content. I followed primarily because apart from Kevin Bradshaw he was practically the only other person in Manchester making timelapses, then he moved to Lancashire. Didn't he used to be on here but got booted off?
  13. Time beginning to run out now on this winter. Yes we still have most of March as well but by then everything feels different. Rarely does it last in March but I suppose some snow is better than nothing. Only thing that can save this winter ending up crap is 2018 style beast. The shield got overwhelmed here, it was no where to be seen!
  14. Currently driving back home from Tameside hospital, don't worry nothing serious just an appointment, but even up there at 155m there's no lying snow. falling snow but nothing on the ground. Aren't I glad I didn't get my expectations up.
  15. Joe Bloggs it's just not cold enough that's the main problem. Temp and dew above freezing.
  16. stainesbloke yeah and if we cannot get any more snow then I'd like some warmth now. Where you can sit outside without shivering or needing a jacket whilst having a drink or two. Hopefully a few days like that will arrive in April. In the grand scheme of things that's not that far away thankfully.
  17. Day 10 Kinder too. Close to 24 hours of heavy snow there if anyone's interested in pitching a tent haha. Just be careful not to get blown right off the hill, it'll be an absolute raging blizzard Kinder Low (Derbyshire) weather WWW.METOFFICE.GOV.UK Kinder Low 7 day weather forecast including weather warnings, temperature, rain, wind, visibility, humidity and UV
  18. Just been sifting through the models for the snow accumulation and practically all have dropped the snow signal below about 200m really. Looking like a high ground event.
  19. russwirral I was living in Ashton funnily enough in 2004 going up towards Mossley. And yeah I completely forgot about the Xmas day snow, gave a few inches but didn't last all that long on the ground. Definitely wasn't part of a significant cold spell so just another fleeting event unfortunately.
  20. Harsh Climate your not wrong. I was born in 85 so most of my memories are from the 90s and after 96 in particular it was poor. Rarely did snow cover last even overnight. Funnily enough the heaviest snow that we had back then from 97-2000 was probably from the unusually cold April in 98. Had a really decent covering in that month. Decent winter overall in 2000-2001 but then for the most part rubbish until late 2008. Late Feb 2005 was ok though.
  21. Still not feeling it tomorrow here. Definitely a shield in effect, damn Pennines, so just gonna get on with my day. I'll be chuffed for you guys who get the white stuff though. We all deserve a bit of happiness.
  22. cheese their winters are still too long for me though, not as long as Svalbard but even so, probably 60°N would be my limit. Not really a fan of extremely dark days either. It's bad enough here at 53°N. When you look at the climate of Suomussalmi in central Finland it's still cold in April. Average minimum temp of -5c and you'll still get the regular freeze thaws as the days get above zero, the build up of the winter snow slowly melts but will take ages to go so they don't escape it and it'll be treacherous for a long time. But it happens just more later compared to the Baltics, throughout March and April. Rather be elsewhere I want some warmth by then. In terms of Latvians view on their winters, most embrace it and they work with it, they go ice fishing and do other winter recreation.
  23. cheese well to be honest I'm not looking for a winter like Svalbard that go on well into April or May or somewhere in the middle of the Russian tundra if I did I'd be planning on going there instead, should I have the means to, as it's never super easy to emigrate as it is. Even for a coldie like me I'd like a break from it all and not trying to break any bones falling on ice every day. So winters like Latvia suit me. Good periods of cold and snow but brief breaks from it as well. My friend lives in Aluksne in the NE part of the country and they've had a decent winter so far, certainly a winter wonderland and way better than this side of Europe. Dec 2010 was warm compared to what they've had this winter. That just puts into context even our most bitter winters. Cold cold cold.
  24. raz.org.rain yeah for deep cold late Feb onwards it needs special synoptics. Really difficult to achieve in this day and age to start off with. It's been another poor winter round here. Soon be 2nd week of Feb and with that time is starting to run out now for anything to save this winter from being anything other than mediocre (again). Good job I'm moving to Latvia in the near future away from this mild rainy island. To a place where there's interesting weather all year round and nice people with manners. Both in short supply in this country.
