  1. Just back from a walk at Pott Shrigley, where the north facing slopes might as well have been snowed on. Drove through light mixed precipitation on the way back, some sleet, some more flakey stuff. Snizzle at home.
  2. Still -2 in this urban heat island. Short of snow, this is as perfect a winter morning as you can get.
  3. Temperature is still falling at the airport, down 2 degrees since I woke up.
  4. It looks like there's a good boost to the wind in that curl that's passing the IOM now.
  5. Just catching the edge of the showers here, and everything just went yellow as the low sun cut under the cloud. Photos don't do it justice.
  6. 71 gusting 100 in Jersey now https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/weather/current/EGJJ.html
  7. The Mersey seems to be peaking at Northenden, still 40cm below the record last year. Could go higher I guess if the rain forecast after midnight arrives, the heavy stuff looks to be on the other side of the Peak District catchment right now.
  8. Spent yesterday on a rib on Pennington Flash doing safety support for 70 junior and youth sailors. After a flat calm at 10 the wind picked up nicely. Things got a little less pleasant after lunch as the big showers piled through, I love the way you can see the heavy precipitation coming towards you as it kicks up spray on the surface of the water. Then we were rewarded with some super rainbows.
  9. 134mm so far at this station Personal Weather Station Dashboard | Weather Underground WWW.WUNDERGROUND.COM Weather Underground provides local & long-range weather forecasts, weather reports, maps & tropical weather conditions for locations worldwide.
  10. No, it's not named after Mrs Brown, but a more consequential Irishwoman. Actually, I had no idea the storm names were anything other than randomly chosen.
  11. Overcast and vaguely damp here, the odd brief burst of rain. No major wind yet but I'm not expecting anything severe.
  12. I took the ferry that landed ay Holyhead at midnight on Sunday, and was able to see the aurora from Llanfairfechan an hour later. Just a general glow, a bit more obvious in this photo, using night sight mode on a Pixel 6 Pro (hand held long ecposure). There's a bank of cloud on the horizon, the aurora stretches up into Ursa Major.
  13. Our storm season starts in September and runs until next August. Antoni was a Med storm, they have their own naming system. No, I see we had our own Antoni in August, wierdly the first use of a storm name from our last season's list. Some details of the confusion here, which includes the fact we had a couple of storms that were named elsewhere before moving to us.
  14. There's a weather warning for rain now. Starts at 6 tomorrow morning...
  15. To be expected given the warm seas. This is the current SST anomaly from Current Operational SST Anomaly Charts - OSPO WWW.OSPO.NOAA.GOV The Office of Satellite and Product Operations (OSPO) is part of the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS). NESDIS is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric... In the 2-3 degrees above normal range I'd say. A wet autumn coming up?
  16. After the heat and the fires, Greece is now getting terrible rain. 780mm is almost Manchester's annual average.
  17. Brightening up a bit now, radar gives a hint that this rain might be on the way out.
  18. Constant rain since I woke this morning. Accompanied my daughter's driving practice up to Broadway for her last day at the leisure centre there before going back to uni. Probably the heaviest train she's driven in, the roads were awash. Hope it dries up later, all our plans are outdoors!
  19. Three rumbles from the cell heading my way through Trafford Park. Hope the worst of it is misses the Pride parade in the city centre. No, four rumbles. Nothing on the lighting detectors.
  20. My son applied, but didn't get a place. Tbh, I'm quite relieved now! Meanwhile, we finished packing the car in light rain at 7 this morning, and have driven South in constant rain, some heavy, now we're near Huntingdon and it's still raining. Heading for the Suffolk coast, expecting strong winds around 2. Storm forecast later for there too.
  21. I've had tons of blackberries and my raspberries are the best since I planted them in lockdown. They both love good moisture and aren't bothered by the temp. Early plums were ok but not very sweet. Victorias are just coming ripe. Most of my apples seem to be getting knocked off by the wind. Squirrels got my pears very early, I think they were looking for moisture when it was dry in May/June, remember that time? Veg-wise courgettes are good this year, just pulled out a 2kg marrow I missed! Leeks are looking good, beans growing well but not fruiting yet. Tomaties would like a bit more warmth I think but growing strongly.
