  1. Just light rain here, nothing like Tuesday. Quite predictable given the easterly: all the heavy stuff is being dropped on the Peaks.
  2. Well South Manchester just had a thoroughly overcast day with hours of only light rain. Totalled about 5mm in the end. Much better today with the sun peeking through.
  3. Has no-one got sanything to say about the storms on the east coast? I can see it's thundering on Twitter, but deadly silent in here!
  4. Terrifying, the poor girl.
  5. We're in an absolute drought as of today, our last rain was two weeks ago. Only 8mm so far this month, after several dry months. From my closest reliable wunderground station Personal Weather Station Dashboard | Weather Underground WWW.WUNDERGROUND.COM Weather Underground provides local & long-range weather forecasts, weather reports, maps & tropical weather conditions for locations worldwide. Jan 59mm Feb 193mm Mar 27mm Apr 39mm May 89mm Jun 45mm Jul 8mm I would normall say we flip equally between dry and wet periods, but in terms of duration, the dry periods look like they outlast the wet ones. A soggy month like February is fine for filling up the reservoirs, but not so good for long-term soil moisture. I can see the results in my garden, where the undergrowth is now filled with bon-dry dead leaves and everything crackles underfoot. Seeing the horrific scenes from Wennington yesterday made me well aware how a similar fire would rip through in this area too.
  6. No it isn't. I've also heard of Tesco fridge failures in Stretford, Bar Hill (near Cambridge) and Banbury. Sounds like they went for a cheap contract that has now blown up in their faces.
  7. Took a thermometer for a walk around the garden. Highest I recorded was 38 on the drive where all the sun reflects off a south-facing gable wall. Coolest was 35 in a shady spot. Nice breeze.
  8. Accidentally clicked on a river level bookmark. That's the lowest I've ever seen it, 50cm is the normal low level.
  9. EGCC reporting 28 already. 24 here, inside and out. I just hung the washing out and it feels oppressive: the humidity is up on yesterday.
  10. 35.4 in my garden. Took a walk to the post office and there were some very local hot spots n the pavements. There's very little wind to stir things up.
  11. 32.5 on my cheapo electronic and 33 on a cheap mechanical thermometer. My garden smells like an low alpine meadow where they've cut the grass for hay. It's also strikingly quiet, no bird sounds at all. They must all be roosting in a shady spot. Make sure to top up your birdbaths and leave extra water out for wildlife, any shallow dish will do in a quiet spot.
  12. 22C recorded at the airport already at 8am. https://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/weather/current/EGCC.html It's only 20C here right now in my leafy suburb, all that tarmac is an extra heat sponge. Even the grass areas will get hot now, given how dry they must be after the last couple of months lack of rainfall.
  13. Interestingly, the rain wasn't forecast quite as far south as it came, I wonder what other details the models are going to get wrong?
  14. Oh yes please, my garden is parched. I'm on sandy soil, so it doesn't run off in a deluge, just soaks straight in. The hopeful progression:
  15. At the bottom of this IT article about the forthcoming heatwave is a discussion about how the official record from 1887 is probbaly bogus anyway. Yellow weather warning issued over high temperatures from Sunday to Tuesday WWW.IRISHTIMES.COM Ireland could see hottest day since records began on Monday with 34 degrees forecast The highest reliable temperature is the 32.5 degrees recorded on June 29th 1976 at Boora, Co Offaly. The paper abstract is here (stll under review). CPD - Reassessing Ireland's Hottest Temperature Record CP.COPERNICUS.ORG
  16. I'm torn between going in to the office on Mon/Tues, where there is A/C, and staying home. The cycle in should be OK in the morning, but coming home could be a wee bit sweaty! Just trying to remember how it felt the last time I experienced mid-30s on holiday, it was July 2009 in southern France when a big pulse of hot air blew in from Africa. Right on the coast it was 36C for a day. With a strong wond blowing it was like standing on front ofa hair-dryer all day. In the holiday photos the kids all look shiny with sweat, but it evaporated straightaway so it was never dripping off us. It's definitely going to be weird having those conditions at home.
  17. Tuesday could be one of those days when a cold beer out of the fridge doesn't get any condensation on it.
  18. Just had a fire drill at the office, I'd forgotten they were even a thing! It's just perfect out: sunny and 20-odd C, a light breeze.
