  1. I thought summer 2020 was unremarkable apart from those hot days at the very end of July and into the first 10 or so of August. There were some distant thunderstorms rumbling around at the time, but I was on the wrong side of town when they hit lol. Spring 2020 was where our sunshine and best weather peaked, mainly in May and early June.
  2. Yes I feel for you, and do sympathise with those who have to work in difficult conditions, and long hours for very little money. I take my hat off to folk who work in the emergency services, as I honestly don’t think I would be cut out for that type of work. Corporate security had long hours, but I didn’t have to work in trying conditions. Do you get more refreshment breaks during this hot weather?
  3. Surely we will get some storms after this.
  4. To be honest with you, regardless of whether it reaches 35c or above, once it gets to 30c, London is very hot already. The humidity today is quite uncomfortable, especially while walking round, but I took sanctuary in Hyde Park, and chilled out for 15 minutes. It beats wearing a suit in this heat.
  5. Yeah I hate cloud at summer, even when it’s low 20s, because it either feels cold, or starts to feel humid if the wind is coming from the south. I guess it’s a small price to pay, if the sunny conditions return later in the week, but I’m hoping we get a storm out of this heatwave.
  6. I would say the marker is from mid September is some years. Even when the weather is still warm, the nights and mornings start to get chilly. From October until early April, it’s either cold or chilly. Some years, it’s even mid May before we feel properly warm enough to stop using the heating. I say this even as someone who lives in London. Going to have some strawberries with vanilla whipped cream, then in about half hour I’ll be sipping a nice cold bottle from the fridge. It’s summer and let’s enjoy it. Sorry to hear to that mate. Must be tough having to deal with that. At least you have a very supportive sister to lend a hand. Makes me think about how I will deal with that when the time arrives. My mum is still fairly young at 68.
  7. With more cloud and the temps still above 25c, that means it will be hot and humid. I would much prefer hot and sunny.
  8. I have about 3-4 mugs of tea or sometimes 5 in a day. I’ve been trying to cut down on caffeine, and just have 3 mugs of tea a day. I love a brew. Have to drink more water when it’s hot, but I can’t do without a cuppa in the colder months. I don’t like the cold and damp weather, and I don’t think everyone enjoys it.
  9. Do you work at all? It seems like you have a lot of time to be sipping beers in the garden. Sounds like heaven in summer.
  10. That doesn’t work if the flat is cold and damp. This is why the cold in this country is just as bad, if not worse than a few weeks of very hot weather in summer. I’m loving it, and long may it continue. The only downside I have is no outdoor space, so I’m sitting in my studio flat feeling quite hot. But, I’ll take that over cold and damp conditions any day. We have the fan on right now.
  11. Yeah 2018 was a lovely summer. Long periods of blue skies and warm to hot sunshine. Much better than 2019,20 or 21.
  12. I’m enjoying this current plus 25c spell, but the only downside can the be the sound of loud mopeds or show-offs revving their engines.(why do they do it, because it’s so annoying and pathetic). Our road is fairly quiet, but it’s those little subtle things they become more noticeable when the evenings are warmer. Since restrictions were lifted last year, people talking loudly coming back after the pub, can be really annoying sometimes. Especially if it’s near midnight and you’re trying to get to sleep. Anyway, to the person who’s finding it hard to sleep in these conditions, may I suggest something. Why not place your feet into a bowl of cold water with some ice cubes, for about 10-15 minutes, and place a damp cold kitchen towel over your head in the evening before you go to bed. These will help to cool the body down, even in a very hot environment. I’ve tried this method, and I live in west London, with no outdoor space.
  13. I think there’s a small chance there will be some storms after this week or hot weather. May produced some thundery activity, so I’m fairly confident we will see some fireworks beyond next weekend, or perhaps this will be ongoing until the end of July.
  14. I didn’t go outside today, but not because of the heat. I’m just feeling tired from the busy work week.
  15. It doesn’t beat 2018, but will probably end up being the nicest sunny spell in July since July 2018. Humidity has been low, despite the hot sunshine. Probably because there’s been a breeze in the mix. I didn’t like the 2019 spell, because it was humid and more cloudy and hazy.
  16. Have a feeling august will be a month of two halves, with the first two weeks being unsettled and cool, but the second half warm and sunny with a few hot days thrown in, and maybe a widespread storm. Then, the gradual cool-down into autumn starts. 2021 was terrible, with long spells of dull days, apart from 3 lovely hot sunny weeks in June and July, 1 week in late July, the other 2 at the start of June. 2020 was a mixed bag, but much better in comparison.
  17. Lovely spell of weather and the best July spell since 2018 in my region. I hope this lasts all the way until late August or early September, with the occasional thunderstorm or cooler day.
  18. 28c is still hot, but yes, its nothing out of the ordinary. Most poor summers have reached 28-30c at some point, even ones during 1985-88. 30-32c is where it starts to feel really hot. 33 and above is heatwave territory.
  19. Yes I can, but I have a slight belly these days lol. Me and the misses have started intermittent fasting a few days a week, and have experimented with a gluten-free diet. We still eat bread and pasta obviously, but when we don’t eat it, you notice the difference.
  20. Yeah, the earlier part of the 2000s still had frequent thunderstorms after hot spells. 2001 and 2004 produced some widespread thunderstorms in the London region and the South, also June 2005 produced a severe midweek thunderstorm, but not sure of the date. It was rumbling on after dark, so must have been towards 11 or even midnight.
  21. I’m glad I changed my job and went back to being a messenger. I get to walk around London part of the day for my job. Beats the security job and having to wear a suit. The tube is the only drawback for me now, as the Central Line is roasting once daytime highs reach 25c or exceed it.
  22. It would be interesting to see what year saw the change from regular thunderstorm activity after a hot spell, to a period where hot spells are lacking in storms. I think 2007 was the first summer where this started. 2006 was still thundery during this hot spells in July that year. This is perfect, but even I as a heat lover will admit once it touches 29-30c it starts to feel uncomfortable and more humid. Still, I’m not knocking it, as I’ll gladly take weeks of this weather until September, over dull clag and low 20s.
  23. Upper 20s is hot, but it isn’t extreme. Even a few days exceeding 30-1c isn’t extreme. A week long 40c would be something on the cusp of becoming really uncomfortable, but I can’t see anything like that happening this year.
  24. Well I can argue that it’s equally dangerous when the winter temps are around 6-7c with damp cold and windy conditions, when people struggle to keep their homes warm. And no, not everyone lives in a warm building where we can all wear shorts and t shirts in winter, as some of us live in old Victorian houses, with poor insolation, which makes the October to early April period a trying period for trying to keep warm. More deaths occur due to winter cold, as opposed to summer heat, especially in the U.K.
