  1. Well firstly, obviously, there are 4 more days to factor in there, which I think were below average, so a chance there. Secondly 0.08C over 3 months, with nearly 50 years between datasets is in my opinion getting close to the margin of error. ie this winter was to all intents and purposes equal to 62/63 because there is too little between them in temperature to accurately tell the difference. Some great photos on this thread today.
  2. This is terrible, I want some snow! I know what I'm doing at the weekend, snow hunt to find the deepest snow. Think I'll leave the car behind and let the good old public transport system take me to it.
  3. I've got severe snow-jealousy with all these reports on the radio this morning of roads impassable with 2 ft of snow. Hail, rain or more snow I'm going to central Highlands at the weekend to see it for myself!
  4. Got up at 2am, heavy snow, 1 cm lying, got up at 6.30am, rain nothing lying, went back to bed dejected, got up at 7.10am, snowing and lying! Not quite as good as it looked last night however plenty of time to go.
  5. Going by climate UK Scotland looks like it could record the 2nd coldest winter since 1914.
  6. Well after a week of this dry low pressure things are starting to look up for the late weekend. I'll even allow myself to get marginally excited. That isn't a good map for geography! Look at that imaginary loch where Blairgowrie is that apparently the Tay flows through! Glè mhaslach. (on the maker of the map)
  7. This morning when I was coming into Dundee from Fife it was snowing on the lead up to the bridge but cleared 1/4 of the way across and I was left with an excellent view of half the city under a heavy snow shower and the other half under nearly blue skies.
  8. Do you have a link to a paper which ratifies this claim?
  9. You might be in luck Dev, it takes more than an internet campaign to sack a tenured professor! On a more general note I'd like to point out that the need to use a FOI request to get information from an academic department seems a bit excessive and perhaps telling. Generally once the project is rolled up and published then a simple email to the corresponding author is enough to get requested information.
  10. If you are going to be making statements like that then the LI theory needs to be published, properly. Any idea when that would be? (I hope you have a bit left on the credit card for that day) I have to agree that paying to read papers is a disgrace, I think knowledge should be free, and MANY people in academia have a similar view. However I don't entirely agree that science is only for those who can afford it. That is purely your personal position because you have undertaken a private, self funded research project. Like you said serious science isn't a hobby, it is a profession, the only "means" is being smart enough, because if you are smart people will give you money. Heck science pays my bills!
  11. Yes a female sparrowhawk, and her victim looks like a collared dove.
  12. Is that really true? My special science-sense says no. I think I'd be expecting ice formation at the ice/water interface, if the air on top of the ice is somewhat cool.
  13. We had a slight covering here, only lay on existing ice though and give it a nice fresh whiteness. I personally think Netweather are missing a trick by closing down the regional thread. Most of the people on here will go back to 1 post a week, do they really want that? I don't.
  14. GFS ensembles are improving run by run. Downgrading the "mild" interlude as it gets closer. Lots of members now delaying the departure of the -5 T850 by 2 days. I think there is a chance that we could get through the mild spell without losing the -5 uppers at all.
  15. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8444399.stm 2nd slide.
  16. I hope you bought a metre stick to measure the snow. I'm looking forward to those pics! I'm surprised about the -0.3C average temperature, I didn't think it would be that low, but remember there were pretty hard frosts in the week before the snow come.
  17. No, although there are a few snow grains stuck to my window (slanted). There is a dot on the radar right over your house.
  18. ˙ooʇ ʎɐqə ɯoɹɟ pɹɐoqʎəʞ ɐ ʇɥƃnoq ı Edinburgh are getting the special even treatment now that's for sure.
  19. Somewhere is going to be in for a very special night tonight with that nice North-South shower band. There is a temporary blizzard here as the snow passes on the way to LS's snow attactor. Do you go to Bell-Baxter LS? Excellent pictures of the Tay at Dundee, and you lot all thought I was telling fibs this morning!
  20. I'll need to look for that online. Yes there were chunks of ice several metres across floating down between the bridges at 9.30am.
  21. A question for native Dundonians: when was the last time you saw chunks of ice floating down the Tay at Dundee?
  22. At this very minute it is not snowing, however a heavy shower has just passed.
  23. The GFS NW version has temps off the scale for Saturday 9th for the central Highlands. Temp map gets down to -30C if my contour counting is correct. Obviously unlikely, as we have seen over the past two weeks it has been very difficult to get a "perfect" set up for min temps. But it demonstrates the potential.
  24. Heads up anyone down wind of me, very intense shower which has put down a fair covering.
