Seriously happy everyone has had a snow fall. 20cm or 1cm it’s doesn’t matter.
as for me, it’s time out time. Been a very busy 6 months for me and I fly to Thailand on the 21st of March. Happy to Announce my Mrs has finally received her settlement visa. So a new chapter starting in my life.
wishing everyone good luck and good health.

It is amazing how the little “foehn” effect has been so persistent and so focused on a really narrow area on the immediate downslope. Stockport - Glossup - Oldham - Bury - Bolton - Blackburn.
Funnily enough areas that used to get buckets of snow off a Westerly/ North Wedtely when global warming hadn’t warmed the Irish Sea.
Many a very heavy snow fall from those set ups. Now got a gale force easterly and it’s heavy blowing snow but just will not settle.

Yes the 200m mark at present is the point where marginality disappears.. as often the case, but hopefully that will pull down to 100m before too long!
Wet here. I’d probably say 250m

I am getting concerned about driving over the 62 from 8am and whether I’m going to get back around 12 tomorrow.
The apps and forecasts all differ, I’m wondering what to do?
I’m in the Todmorden area tomorrow. My gaffer has already said if it’s bad when you wake up, don’t bother going.
I would not chance it if I was you pal.

Generally an E'ly wind is ok for here in this part of Manchester. Just hope it doesn't become SE'ly as that really does mean game over because Kinder Scout does a good job at causing the shadow in this location. I hope that's not what the Met are seeing.
metO app shows winds easterly and North Easterly on Thursday.. we should be fine

That's me out then or is this for the south
Could be all of us if the low barrels straight through our region

Appears to have trended slightly south again on Thursday, but high ground around Pennines and Peak District will have no worries. I'd be surprised if we don't see at least a few hours of falling snow for most of us in the North West, some will see it all day.
Think altitude will come into play. Those above 250m will be fine
those with 150-200 should be ok..
anything less than those heights, it could become a little iffy. Just hope we all see heavy laying snow.

Reflecting on frontal snowfall it has been a long time since we experienced such an event that wasn't followed by a rapid thaw. Most frontal snowfall over Cumbria comes from the west, with a warm front and mild atlantic air quickly following on behind. Exceptions can occur when fronts stall in situ think Feb 96.
Can't recall the last time we had a frontal event from the south that gave all snow - often they don't make it this far, the colder air to the north normally cuts in and sends features south. I do remember Feb 23 1994, long time ago saw a front move as far as S Cumbria gave us a foot, but north Cumbria had nothing!
We can do very well for sustained snowfall when fronts stall from the south through the county, but they are a rarity. An off-shore wind from the SE is the ideal set up, with a cold landmass track from the Pennines.
Think the Greater Manchester contingent would dread a SE wind

That low will probably be further south with the West Midlands taking our snow chances
