Tomorrow morning could be anything. Wet snow was falling at Teggs Nose this morning and there was still a covering from the other day but not substantial, although I guess it is all subjective. The roads are all open and clear so far.
Bit unfair if you look at the science and details and past events. You vastly underestimate the power of a SSW it may not bring us deep cold but 60% do and this is quite an extreme one fascinating science and certainly no Express style headline.
Not convinced it is a fail from the met office. The app showed the percentage chance of a shower it didn’t say definitely showers everywhere. The nature of these kind of showers meant some areas would do better than others and that could not be pined down until the showers developed
Well the met office app now has me down for drizzle and light rain showers tomorrow, it was heavy snow before. I should have known really. This has happened every time.
I think we can still get severe winter weather but we seem to need much colder uppers. Although after going down to Birmingham and Gloucester after Christmas and seeing large snowfalls there then the script isn’t quite as straight forward as we may think. I am sure very similar Synoptics in the past have brought me severe deep snow whereas as Now at 160metres I am getting what I call spring snow that is slushy and has gone by the end of the day.
Yes 1987 was the only time my school ever closed because the heating system froze. We went sledging and you went straight over the fence and across the road in the deep snow. My mother talks about ‘63 and bitter cold and deep snow and the roads from Alderley Edge to Macclesfield being blocked and the Coop still delivered the weekly groceries. Was just hard work pushing the pram in the snow. My father was a market gardener in 1947 and they lit fires in the fields to thaw the soil so they could harvest vegetables.
The problem is now the BBC is using Meteogroup for their forecasts. Meteogroup are using data that suggests mainly dry but Met Office warnings overide whatever they are forecasting and have to be shown. This was highlighted earlier on Twitter. Hence we may get more contradictory forecasts.
I don’t believe any of it anymore. I am at 165mtrs altitude and it’s been pretty dire. The biggest problem has been lack of precipitation all winter. We’ve had a few snowfalls but nothing spectacular not even if I have driven up the hill towards the Cat.
