This thread, and the people in it haha...does make me laugh. (not everyone) but certain people claiming winter is over for good now, because the MetO say so, and in the next breath saying how bad the MetO are at forecasting..........I find that hilarious, so thanks for the laughs haha

Thats wrong though. Jan is 0.4 below the 81-10 average, and only 0.2 above the 61-90 average, so by modern standards its on the cusp of being below, and more or less average for older standards. So not sure where you're getting the above average from? As for the rest, exactly, even these days, there's many aspects that are difficult to predict. So why do you feel the need to blame anyone or everyone? This winter has been very difficult to predict by nearly every model or forecasting service. I dont think there's any single forecast that has been anywhere near 100% correct, even at shorter ranges. If you can do a better job, then go for it lol, although I'd wager you'd be happier if every month was above average.

Thankfully thats all conjecture, so dont need to worry until nearer the time (if indeed there is a need to worry)

I agree it would need below 3c CET to make it an average winter (I assume you meant 3c and not -3c lol) However, my point is that yes the models are looking "milder" for the foreseeable, but not that long ago they were looking colder for the foreseeable. Saying Feb will likely finish above average when its only 2nd Feb is just guess work at the moment

It is funny isn't it. Winter was over back in December from what some people were saying, and here we are just over half way through winter (the more recent UK winter time frame), and winters over again. Whatever people's views, and whether the models stick to their guns, or flip back and forth, no one can say winter is over until march surely lol

Which could also be argued as a very simplistic view......the nature of this type of science is, no one really knows for sure

Just checked outside, and it is actually proper snow now in Leigh-on-Sea, nothing too heavy mind, and ground is far too wet, but makes a change from rain!

Yeh, its been what I'd call very heavy sleet nearly all evening in Leigh. I know there's always a what if element, but its been doing this for soooo long now, and we are just on the cusp of it being snow. If it was just that little bit colder today, it would've been very decent! As it stands though, naff all lol
