  1. Going by how little sunshine this summer has had in Ireland, it might as well be winter. At least won't be looking at low lying cloud for 16 hours a day.

As for autumn, well just hopefully it's better than the last one. 2018 was perfect for me up until the dreadful November.

  2. Wouldn't be summer 2020 without another flop here, this "warm spell" here in Dublin:

Friday - Mostly cloudy but some nice sunny spells at times. 24C, warmest day since 2nd June..

Saturday - Lots of sunshine, 19C. One of the best days of the year

    Sunday - Cloudy throughout, 18C.

Monday - Cloudy with rain at times, 16C.

Tuesday - Cloudy, misty and murky. 19C

Wouldn't have liked the 30s southern and SE England have had but some more sunshine would be nice especially after one of the dullest Junes and Julys on record. This summer all round has been a disaster here.

    That's the problem isn't it.

Even a poor summer in the south or central region of England, will still get a couple of weeks where temps reach 27c-32c. But, in Scotland, the summers are virtually non existent.

Yup and same is true for Ireland. It's sad May/June is often the peak of our summer with average monthly sunshine dropping from 196 hrs in May to 156 hours by August. Need a complete reverse of the normal flow to get a half decent summer. I'm in one of the "sunnier" places of the country too so don't know how on earth the north and northwest manage with even less sunshine.

  4. Country averages for July 2020

    UK - 142.4 hrs, dullest since 2012

    England - 163.9 hrs, dullest since 2012

    Wales - 140.7 hrs, dullest since 2010

    Scotland - 136.7 hrs, dullest since 2017

Northern Ireland - 83.0 hrs, second dullest on record (1986 - 82.8 hrs)

After such a cool and dismal July temperature wise this month doesn't deserve to get a CET of 16.0C or higher but both the 30th and especially the 31st could be enough to squeeze out a 16 CET month and could deny us a cooler than average month for the first time this year based on the readings on the CET website. This is where the CET stands provisional to 30th July 2020

    Month          CET          Anomaly          Notes

    January       6.4            +2.6

    February     6.3             +2.5

    March          6.7            +1.0

    April            10.4           +2.5

    May             12.5           +1.3

    June            15.3           +1.2

    July             15.8           -0.2                 provisional, to the 30th

At one point that July CET was below June 2020's and it was looking for a while like we was going to get a cooler July than June but that is certainly off now and with the heat to end the month then a 16 CET is now looking very likely

Just hope that the trend of 2015 doesn't continue as we all know what happened to the CET come December 2015

July CET was confirmed at 15.7C.

    Dublin Apt dullest Julys

    2020 (to 26th): 84.1 hrs

    1944: 89.9 hrs

    1986: 93.4 hrs

    2002: 106.8 hrs

    1957: 108.7 hrs

    1981: 119.8 hrs

Finished with 102.5 hrs, third dullest on record, following the dullest June since 1993.

  7. Hope to never see the likes of Nov 2019 ever again. Damp type cold with Dublin being in the firing line for a lot of slow moving weather fronts and the dullest Nov since 1983. Was duller and wetter than Nov 2018 somehow. Only slightest bit of interest was the snow event that hit the peaks on 13th/14th which was decent for so early in the season.

Enjoyed October for the most part whilst September despite a superb middle third was mediocre.

I'd like an autumn akin to 1919, 2010 or 2016.

April 2015 was a fantastic month, warm by day but cold at night it was my sunniest April on record and even 2007 and 2011 haven’t came close to beating it. The May that followed was abysmal.

I did prefer April 2015 over April 2020 though the latter was still a great month, just not quite as sunny here in Ireland in contrast to UK. I'd rather erase May 2015 from memory.. I would think we're due such a May soon.

  9. I only really hated July from this summer and the last week of August was very poor too in Dublin. June was decent with good sunshine and largely dry. The main theme of the summer was the cool nature of it than a washout or notably dull here. Pretty forgettable all around really. Was much worse out west. April 2015 was our "summer".

Much prefer it over "Summer" 2020 so far anyway though the second half of 2015 was much worse.

  10. Certainly the worst start to July I have experienced here in Dublin. 16.5 hrs of sunshine in 8 days in July is atrocious, really is no getting away from that. I've had December weeks sunnier than that. Have had 45.2mm of rain too with mean max over 2C below avg around 17C. I had low expectations coming into this summer after spring but it still has managed to go below those expectations.

  11. Often regarded as the best Irish summer since 1995 but I preferred 2018 over it. A pleasant June with a lot of usable weather, possibly the best July the country has had for overall combined warm and sunny weather (July 1955 was sunnier) whilst August was mediocre but passable.

I know I might be in the minority here, but I would love it if just for once we had a summer where no where managed to reach 30°C in the UK. Can't remember when that last happened. Every summer we get at least 2-3 heatwaves these days.

1993. 2007 and 2008 were close but just about reached the magic 30.0.

  13. I have rose tinted glasses for Summer 2010 being one of my personal favourites because of June and August - the latter was my sunniest since 1995 and haven't beaten since! August was on the cool side ending in grass frost but didn't bother me too much with it being sunny. July was ok, I've seen worse. I did enjoy 2009 too for another great June, August was indifferent whilst July being very wet but also of a convective nature so wasn't without interest.

In 2016 35.1 was reached on Jersey on 19 July and in 2017 34.5 was reached at Heathrow on 21 June- which when rounded gives 35C.  On a technicality could we say 35C has been reached 5 years in a row therefore?  Do certain readings eg from Jersey qualify for the record books?

No Jersey is not included in records. The 13 September 2016 max high at Gravesend (34.4C) is considered the overall high for the UK that year.

However, every year from 2015 to 2019 had 34.0C or more which is unprecedented back to 1900.

  17. From a Dublin perspective.

    1. 2018 - No contest here. Best summer month of the period - June 2018, and a good July too. August was still dry and plenty warm days but very disappointing sunshine.

    2. 2013 - Stupendous July. June was fine with a great first week and August was passable but like 2018 lacked the sunshine.

    3. 2014 - Great June/July but deluge and cool August.

    4. 2019 - Decent July but not a standout compared to some others. I enjoyed August for the most part too. I loathe June though.

    5. 2016 - A very humid and frequently warm summer but lacked the sunshine throughout even in August.

    6. 2015 - Pleasant June that was rarely warm but very dry and largely sunny. July was crap and August was mixed.

    7. 2017 - Didn't like any of the months. June started off and ended poor with a decent mid-month period. First half to July was warm and dry but lacked the sunshine whilst second half was sunnier but also cooler and wetter. August was just rubbish.

  18. May 2017 was definitely my personal favourite. Relatively cool first 10 days here due to onshore easterly wind but very sunny. There was also the warm period later on as touted by some.

May 2018 comes up second for self-explanatory reasons.

Really liked May 2016 too because another warm and sunny May. Last 4 days were especially nice. Much of May 2010 was cool but also sunny besides one temporary but really pleasant warm period perfectly coinciding with the weekend of the 22nd/23rd.

Wasn't a fan of all other Mays that I can remember since 2010. May 2015 I loathe especially.

Yes just posted a thread on Feb 2008 and mentioned the snow in March and April 2008.

April 1989 was unusual indeed coming on the back of four very mild months. Not sure what happened there, was there a late SSW that downwelled in April. It was an odd month, as it then turned warm in May, with a run of very warm months following.

The best example is March/April 1974, that came on the back of a very mild and preety snowless winter..

Would be interesting to note whether these cold snowy spells especially those later in March and in April came after SSW events. My post is about late Feb and early March, when you don't need a SSW to deliver cold and snow, just a bout of cold NW/N airstreams can do the trick - or high pressure to the NE/N/E, late season cold and snow (late March onwards) usually needs a more fundamental change in the arctic profile to manifest itself.

My classification of late season is roughly 21 March - late April.

There was a major SSW in February 1989 and there was some downwelling in early to mid-March with a -NAM but it was temporary and had to wait 'til April for a more pronounced downwell.

Oh mate, you are selling Slovakia to me.

My partner is from Latvia, and while it’s a completely different region, they also enjoy woodland hikes and skiing, although it’s quite flat. They get plenty of snow usually, but 2019/20 has been snowless so far there.

Ireland is nice, but it has way too much rain for my liking, and while it has lovely countryside, I find The Lakes region in England just as nice, although weather can be poor also.

The rain isn't even a problem much of the time here in the east of Ireland. Much of the "wet days" are drizzle or light rain for a few minutes due to low lying stratus cloud. Rarely get a proper wet day. The problem with Ireland is the lack of sunshine (have you seen the articles of people lacking vitamin D in Donegal) and if you want extreme weather or seasons, probably one of the worst countries in the world then.
