  1. Let's all remember how the Pacific NW 'Forecasters' downgraded what their models were showing them a year ago eh?

Bottom line is 'algorithms' don't do the "Climate Change? is it real?" thing?

They just crunch numbers from the data fed to them?

How many mad/bad' runs across how many platforms now?

&, really, if not now how soon will 40C fall?

Through the noughties , in here, I was assured it was 2070 or later.....in the noughties...

  2. I seem to recall, back 'int day, raging 'discussions' (in the then 'Environment' section of the board?) as to just 'when' the UK would see its first 40C

All the 'regular' climate change deniers (back then) had it occur beyond 2070 & were hissying at my "By the 2030's.....

Seems we were all wrong eh? (I'm sure the site has records of such discussions?)

Indeed it was, Don. I, like many, may have been too quick in fingering the IOD as the cause of 2019's heat spikes? So, guessing once again, the 'new' GFS must be picking up on developments elsewhere -- North Africa and the Mediterranean perhaps?

IIRC the forecasters looking at last summer's 'Heat-dome' over the Pacific NW 'played down' the temps the models were showing thinking them 'unbelievable' only for the Models to be proven right?

By mid week we should have a better idea how things are looking,,,,,,

I heard the wailing of the flood warning siren at Todmorden on the BBC News last night, and it must be scary particularly for those who remember back to the War years.

I didn't know that in the German town I used to live in they use such to summon the firemen......18 storeys up & that sets a wailing!

I live in Mytholmroyd so I've heard it both 'testing' & For real event!.......it's the slow wind down from the final wail..... then the silence that follows..... that gets me!

  5. Here's a thought, Marine Ice Cliff Instability (MICI) has been in operation in some of the Ocean terminating Glaciers since the Noughties, how do you think switching from 'seasonal calving' to year round calving will impact loss rates?

We all know Greenland is basically a below sea level basin fringed with mountains.

The Glaciers draining the uplands currently take ice to the Sea but there comes a point where those Glacial Valleys allow the flooding of that inland basin by the Atlantic

What happens to the Km of ice above once these breaches are ongoing?

We know that current atmospheric forcings, when last the norm, saw West Antarctica ice free & Greenland 2/3rds ice free (125,000 yrs ago?) so it is not a question of 'If' we'll see massive discharge from Greenland , just a matter of 'When'?

  6. I just don't get the 'Alarm' side of this at all?

We've hotly debated the subject for decades & those taking part surely recognised the potential for HUGE methane releases as the Far North warms at its accelerated rate?

Last summer saw 100F breached in the Arctic Circle, what do our newcomers think that means for the Permafrost? (& its 'cargo?)

When temps again allow for rapid microbial activity what do You think happens to those km thick layers of vegetation overlying the far North?

We might not have 'told You So' but we certainly asked similar Questions to those above in the 90's/noughties!
