The met definition of Summer is just for keeping tidy statistics, nothing more. It would become messy if using the astro way, as solstices/equinoxes change frequently.

I have always stood by the astronomical definition. It's simple and not complicated, and it's what I was taught at School. I don't understand the need to change definitions & meanings because of festivals or cultures. Like the Irish calendar - Summer is May 1st to July 31st. Give it another 100 years, and they'll  be hundreds of definitions of Summer.

I find astronomical seasons better reflect the weather.  For example, snow is much more likely after the December solstice rather than the 1st of December.  In my eyes September has and always will be a summer month as mean temperatures are similar to that of June.

Dry, sunny for the morning and early afternoon, some cloud edged in for the south around 3 with a mix of sun and sunny intervals until around 5, mostly sunny thereafter.

Temps 25c Coast, up to 29c inland.

Last of these days for a while, will they return this summer?

Second half of August I bet.

Last time we reached 30C in August was 2013. In fact, that's the only time it's reached 30C in August since 2005.

It's ridiculous when you consider that before 2007, August was the month that reached 30C most often in this area - 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1999,1997,1996, 1995 all reached 30C at least once in August (2-4 in some i.e 1999, 2003, 1995). Some of those summers were unremarkable as well.

Also, its reached 30C more times in June since 2007 than in July or August here.

    Pretty incredible really.

I have found that recent summers are front-loaded in terms of the good weather as the Atlantic ocean is cooler at the start of the season and hence has less energy to fuel weather systems/the jet sream.  Later in the summer as the oceans warm the Atlantic has enough energy to barrel through any high pressure that forms over the UK.

Well it depends where you are. But, I’m talking about how it’s more depressing in september, because we are heading towards winter by that stage.

I still believe September is a summer month.  Autumn only really begins shortly after the equinox when days are shorter than nights (despite this October can be very warm and pleasant, take 2011 as an example)

What a disgusting summer once again in Central Europe. Not to mention it began in April. Trees are still dying from 2015 drought and this will be another nail in the coffin for the already decimated forests. Groundwater levels are falling quickly and there are already talks of butchering livestock because there is no feed for them. The next week will be lovely with max. temps reaching 35-37C.

Extreme drought for three years in a row, ugh.

Send some of that heat my way in South Wales.  Summer has been fairly average here.
