Blimey not a flake here in Lincoln, but 20 miles down the road Grantham gets plastered. Wondering if an expert could tell me why this system is now sinking south rather than continuing on its (slow) northern direction?

Global warming isn’t real because you don’t get many thunderstorms in Guildford? Mate you’ve got to publish a paper on that. Could be a game changer.

Me and the missus would like nothing more than to relocate to the Lake District. Have to say the prospect of sweeping out raw sewage every winter (and some summers) is putting us off a bit. It’s got to be said that it at least ‘feels’ like a proper winter this year, despite the lack of decent white stuff. It’s been fairly....cold.

Fingers crossed tomorrow delivers some goods here in Lincs even if it doesn’t last very long. As expected the SSW appears to be a bit of a damp squib, it won’t be long before we’re hoping it gets a bit warmer.

It seems the situation is as unchanged as has always been this winter. Decent synoptics, but the air for the majority just isn’t cold enough. I’ve heard the sequel to ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ is gonna be ‘Day 10, maybe Day 12’. Better than 12 degree south-westerlies I suppose.

It seems to me that the models often show quite dramatic possibilities in the long term, which is what people find entertaining. Being the UK though, those possibilities are mostly watered down in the short term to mild and damp in the winter. Plumes etc seem to materialise more often in the summer. Even by their own standards, this has been quite a dramatic flip by the models to milder weather. This year there’s the consolation of the SSW, but to me that holds out the very real possibility of further disappointments.

Would i be right in thinking that the current set up 20 or 30 years ago would have given a lot of snow for a lot of the country? Is climate change that immediate?

Got a good hour of snow this afternoon here in Lincs and the kids were nearly able to make a snowdwarf. I see the models are now ‘struggling’ so I assume we’re well on track for 12 degrees and raging south-westerlies this time next week.

Went out for a little spin on the bike this morning and I can certainly confirm it was f-f-freezing. And unfortunately, raining. Is there any truth in the rumour that the average model thread contributor regularly gets into trouble for promising that their wife’s birthday present will appear in 10 days?

Anyway, snow (and heatwaves) are lovely in theory but it in reality they’re a pain in the behind. Taking your life into your hands going anywhere or too hot to do anything, even kipping. That said, if we I get 8 inches next week I’ll be as happy as a pig in poo.

On the other hand, furnace type spells are more than possible, so there is that.

After a lot of study of the Mod thread, I’ve come to the conclusion that a ‘proper’ cold spell is now impossible in the UK. Everything’s set up right, but lads, the air just isn’t cold enough. And I’m no expert, but it seems cold air is quite important in these situations.
