  1. a winter somewhere about 1967-ish, I got to work in the snow, was told to set off home again but couldn't get up the first hill, the car I had was rear engine rear wheel drive, the front wouldn't steer with so little weight so I borrowed about 12 bricks to put in the front (boot), but had to make for my Uncle's farm where I stayed overnight. The snow stopped falling during the evening and I went out with my cousin to try and find buried cars in snowdrifts about 8ft deep between the hedges. Next morning my cousin got the tractor and started to dig his way out to the main road where he met the highways snowploughs.
  2. still misty and feeling cold with the dampness
  3. frosty misty start to the morning (sea mist), reasonably bright, pressure hit a high of 1042.1mB (since my wx station records 31/10/2009)
  4. not sure if this is the same as the Watson W8681, wsplc.com have spare parts, I got a new wind vane recently, but you have the problem of telling if it's the transmitter or receiver at fault, just assuming the transmitter as it's the most vulnerable to the effects of the weather (ironic !), damp etc. (but assume the transmit and receive may be 'paired' in case neighbours have one too ?)
  5. sunny, calm morning, frost on the grass
  6. Verglas - the clue is in the avtar ! seemed to be appropriate for a weather website (remembered from Norwegian road signs a long time ago, with slight adaptation !)
  7. feel free, I was having trouble trying to find the best section to put it in, ... ..... and now wondering what I started !
  8. just checked our snowdrop patch, about 2" high, also daffs peeping through and something else in tubs (crocus ?) about 2" high having survived being buried in snow and having the avalanche off the conservatory roof fall on them too !. Over the last few years we have had primroses in flower in the hedge by about xmas, but with this winter there's not a sign yet
  9. very still, frosty, bright and misty edit : looking on the local webcams the east coast promenade and harbour areas have quite think sea mist but the mountains are crystal clear Current data for Douglas - Isle of Man - GB 20 January 2011 10:21:22 Temperature (°C): Current 1.4 Trend (per hour) +0.5 Average today 0.7 Wind chill 1.4 Heat index 1.4 Dew Point 0.7 Rel Humidity 95% Wind (mph): Current Gust 0.8 NW Average Speed 0.1 NNW Rainfall (mm): Current rate 0.0 Last hour 0.0 Total today 0.0 Total yesterday 0.3 Total this month 68.1 Total this year 68.1 Pressure (hPa): Current 1038.9 Trend (per hour) +0.4
  10. a question posed on BBC radio2 yesterday was "what effect would there be if the world rotated the opposite direction ?" the pundit who replied was very vague really, he said about the sun rising in the west etc, but no mention whatsoever of the weather. I think the effects on the weather would be a major climate changing factor, either turning us into an arctic region or a desert depending what happened in the atlantic which seems to be the major influence on our climate. What do you think would happen to UK weather ?
  11. very dull windy morning, light(-ish) rain
  12. (posting here in the absence of a saturday thread) getting windy but still dry (just !)

  17. Bright sunny morning, bit of a breeze but a nice day after yesterday's 18.6mm of rain
  18. very dark miserable morning, raining and windy
  19. a very dull dark misty morning
  20. All the funny white stuff has gone overnight, with the aid of 18mm rain and +6c temps
  21. Isle of Man have emergency sirens, not particularly weather related, you are just told to 'go in, stay in and tune in' to the local radio stations to see what it's about, it could cover a nuclear accident somewhere (with various nuclear facilities just across the water) or whatever it may be, but we only hear them on test once a quarter, they are triggered via the emergency services radio system. I think there are 13 of them to cover 30x12 miles (or I suppose the main habitation areas of) Just how may millions of sirens would be needed to cover the UK I hate to think, but would like £1 for each of them
  22. brilliant sunshine and calm, a little frost on the car windows but a lot melting now
