Thunder frequency has declined in many parts of the UK, starting in the 1970s/1980s, particularly the south-east.  There have been some exceptions to this in the north, e.g. there's been an increase around Newcastle since around 2005, but averaged nationally the trend has been downward.  There's been a fair amount of research done on it.  Most of the evidence points towards changes in the frequency of synoptic patterns that are favourable for thunderstorms, rather than the warming climate (if anything, all other things being equal, warmer temperatures might be expected to produce more thunderstorms).

    Thank you, that's very helpful

I don’t think it’s to do with geography.

I remember many times in my younger days where storms would fester in the Welsh Marches then push NNE into the Cheshire plain.

What do you could be the cause of the trend in less storms up here?

I’m sure people in here are sick to the back teeth of hearing me whinge - I am extremely jealous but happy for everyone who caught a storm today - some amazing pics and accounts and I’ve been following it all unfolding (doing my own little virtual chase from the couch) so thanks everyone!

I do it too mate, don't worry. It is annoying seeing the likes of Lincolnshire and the North East get constant batterings lol

Exactly the same here - came from the east in August 2020.

At least you get forecast storms! You might as well chop the south of the U.K. off in summer

True, but I'd actually prefer not to get them forecasted because I want have to cancel plans for nothing. I understand that the forecasters aren't aware of the geography around here which seems to hinder storm activity

I wonder if congleton suffers from the same geographical phenomenon as Andover. I feel your pain brother

I think we have had one direct storm in over 3 years and that came from the east which is quite rare in the UK lol.

It's odd that your location hasn't had any luck too, you'd assume you'd be the first to get any French imports but they tend to die out these days unless they are Kent clippers lol

I understand your frustration; I'm frustrated with today's outcome as well, but to put this on the forecasters is harsh and, in my opinion, wrong.

It was a really tricky one to call today with a lack of cross model agreement, even this morning! When you've got that sort of short-term discrepancy, it's much harder for the pros to nail the specifics hence the wide warning area. Just because you or I didn't cop a storm doesn't prove there's incompetence there, just that our weather is sometimes very fickle and unpredictable!

    Have a good evening 😎

I understand but it just happens too often for this area. The amount of times I've had to rearrange plans because of impending forecasts of heavy rain or storms and it never happens. Its OK though.

  6. Another day of a forecast for this area being SO wrong. Very frustrating when you cancel plans because you rely on the forecast of incompetent people who claim to know about weather. This happens every bloody time. How many more times are they going to put us in the severe weather warning area and it turns out to be the very opposite, a glorious day? I understand its only a 'risk' of storms, but they can't be wrong this often. Just don't put us in a,warning area, if anything happens fine but I'd rather that then be led to believe something that never happens. *sigh*
