Targeted and Had Lunch in Hays and it wasnt long before the Cyclic Supercell of the Day would initiate just east of there over Russell (Ks) We had an amazing view of the Structure and beauty of this Supercell whilst it dropped 6 Tornadoes along its path just North of Interstate 70. The Best was just west of us over Bunker Hill. Some Pics for you of the Structure and Tornadoes!

Tour 5 off to a flying start and more to come tomorrow

These are some great shots Paul! The structure on that looks very robust and the tornado itself looks a pretty decent size too!

  2. Evening all bit of a late post, hope everyone is well! Saturday evening proved to be pretty good for a decent part of the south east with some rather complex conditions at play. Very hot in here in the morning but certainly chilly in the evening with a huge temperature drop and very gusty winds at the surface blowing low cloud from the north. I've watched storm's for a long time and I always thought there was a chance in this situation and as soon as I saw the development near Cherbourg and the low cloud kindly disappeared the skies looked primed. The development of the storms was pretty impressive over a short period and I was lucky enough to not have to drive for the second time this summer! Saw some really good lightning and it it was my 8 year old sons first chase and we only had to walk 50 yards to the park! He was absolutely buzzing. Us guys and girls here in Sussex were treated to a pretty decent hour or so as this unfolded. Well done to all that saw some fairly big skies and to those who chased. There's some really committed people in this thread who chase long distances along with some very knowledgeable people who know what they are talking about and that's what helps people understand storm scenarios and newer members learn about how storms form etc. This is what keeps this group alive and kicking!!!

Currently enduring post COVID foggy brain and therefore my ability to get my head around meteorological nuances today is somewhat limited. So. I will rely on those more knowledgeable tonight: OH has offered to drive me to the coast if there is a chance of seeing some light shows - so what do you guys and gals think? We'd be heading down Solent way. Is it worth a chance?

Could be borderline around the solent but worthing eastwards along the Sussex coast could be a good shout.

Today is the 3 year anniversary of the best storm I witnessed.  It nailed Eastbourne/Hastings head on.

Not expecting anything of that variety tonight, it'll probably be a kent clipper or a bust, but you never know

I remember that one very well! I watched that unfold from beachy head and Eastbourne was lit up like the national grid! Had a very close cg just a few hundred yards away which was seriously loud. Not seen a storm like that one since that night was a good one!!

  5. Evening all, hope everyone is well! As others have mentioned on here already, here in West Sussex we have lots of low level cloud moving nne and the radar and ppn moving from the ssw. An interesting situation in my opinion and just a few signs of some instability now in the vicinity of the channel islands. Its a case of radar watching now and hopefully some storms can start to form ahead of the front! Best of luck to everyone and hopefully some of us will be in for a treat. It's become very gusty here in the last hour or so!

Finally got around to editing all of my shots from the other night, and it was slim pickings tbh!

Here again is the one I'm super proud of and posted on the night itself:

For comparison/honesty, here is the raindrop-filled uncropped version, with a slightly different edit of the bolt itself!

    DSC_1108.thumb.jpg.fed7534e0670638e3aed3f244f68f2e6.jpg

Not long after that bolt, came this, and clearly I'd sorted the raindrops between shots:

And here are the others that just made the cut, they're ok-ish I guess!

    Thanks

It was incredible to see first hand, and almost felt like it was right in front of us.

I few of the people a have shown it to think it's fake

still have to download some of the footage off my camera, hopefully there is some other decent captures on there

I can vouch for this and it's definitely not fake! I was on the top of the downs just north of Hove watching this come in off the channel and some of the lightning was phenomenal! Some great shots you got there bud, nice one!!

A good storm. Not the best - a little too quick, too wet and very elevated. Also shame it didn’t stick around as it headed NE

evening was further blighted after Her Magesty’s Unfinest pulled me over just as I got home AT 3AM after going through a light that went red at the last minute. Apparently they would rather I slammed my brakes on and aquaplaned on the wet road.

What a great bunch of guys - shame they don’t understand basic science, and took £100 from me for basically just being there. Also just in case the police are reading this - don’t talk to me like I am your mate - you pulled me over because you were on a power trip. I am not your mate.

apologies but it’s really upset me. Good storm though. Might not chase in future though because it’s now cost me a small fortune

Sorry to hear that flash, don't give up on the chasing! I wouldn't have slammed on my breaks either and risked hitting something or even worse someone by aquaplaning. The law ought to focus on the people I see every day looking down at their phones while driving and not paying attention to the roads instead of hiding their camera vans behind big roadsigns and trees and getting easy hits in the middle of the night when there's no one about!

  9. Morning all hope everyone is good and those who were out enjoyed the show last night! Apologies for the long post but I have to say that last night was pretty special here in Sussex,I was up on the top of the downs just north of Hove and saw hundreds of lightning strikes moving in from the channel,I knew it was going to be a direct hit and would have been pretty dodgy exposed up there so I drove back to where I live and walked up to the park 50 yards up the road and the strongest part of the storm came right over. As it came on to the coast it seemed to take on a bowing segment on radar and we had some fierce wind gusts and horizontal rain. Saw probably one of the best CGs I've ever seen as I was retreating back to my workshop the thunder was explosive and shook the ground! Unfortunately I didn't get it on film as it was lashing it down with rain but was certainly a monster strike! Had a tiny little elevated storm an hour after the main event which passed right overhead and threw out about 20 or 30 strikes in a few minutes so a nice little bonus too! I've watched storms closely for a long time now and it was probably the best storm here since July 2017 which is the best I've ever seen here by far and on both occasions I only had to cover 12miles in the car so I'll Bank that definitely! To those who travelled to Sussex last night, well done we hit the jackpot here!!

Bit of a close one earlier, the lightning was quite infrequent but did shoot orange sparks from a telephone pole out of shot on the left about 20 feet away. The surge must of travelled down the cable from the strike on the right side of the frame.

Luckily I was sheltering from the rain, 10 mins earlier I was outside the car with tripod setup.

    That's absolutely unbelievable,great footage mate!!

I'm really toying with the idea of a trip somewhere north of Brighton, but I have bad memories of a past chase that ended with nothing

Unfortunately this was due to storms tracking further east than originally forecast, and I'm getting similar vibes about this evening

These last minute changes are not what i wanted to see

I'm starting off just North of Brighton at devil's dyke, could see lightning from the Bournemouth supercell from up here in 2015!!

I see a few comments regarding limited lightning potential this far west, but that doesn't bother me in the slightest. Would rather see interesting structure than strobe lightning.

    Obviously both would be excellent.

Last time I saw some interesting structure in daylight hours was all the way back in 2013.

That looks like a wall cloud was trying to form with all that scuddy stuff hanging underneath! Great shot!
