  1. Weather-history Yes this is quite exceptional, can't remember the last time we saw a 2-day deluge in May. Reminiscent of those post heatwave days with endless rainfall, like the end of July 2019.
  2. danm Damn that's impressive, we've only had 18mm so far this month and now we're due to get up to 120mm within the space of two days. Looks like May will be yet another wetter than average month if the forecast is to be believed.
  3. Maxed out at 17C, a bit cooler than expected but still pleasant. Not much sun around though, yesterday recorded an impressive 14.4hrs...
  4. LetItSnow! Yes, we're in unchartered territory atm.. warm records falling like flies. I've noticed this sudden change ever since September 2021, it's almost like we're in an endless wave of warmth that refuses to stop . Perhaps it's the warm SSTs, or solar maximum. We've had cold spells since then, most notably December 2022. But an actual cooler period longer than a month of even average temperatures has been hard to come by. I'd say Dec 2020 - May 2021 was the last time we saw a protracted cold period, and before that in 2013. Maybe we'll have to wait even longer for another period of below average temperatures.
  5. I imagine if this month happened a month later, it would challenge June 2023 CET. Imo the nights have been more exceptional than the days. We usually get cold nights associated with warmth in May but it's been completely absent this month. No idea why.
  6. Derecho An ending like 2010/2012/2018/2020 would certainly push it to 15C. Doesn't look like we'll get anything like that, so safe bet is low to mid 14s. Still, an amazing feat considering we've never encountered such a CET.
  7. Harry233 Yep did not rate 2022 one bit, the heat from Jul 15-Aug 15 was too much. Only good thing about that year was the sunny January, late March snowfall and December. Though. I'd say 2023 was even worse.. 2024 ain't shaping to be better
  8. Altnaharra once again the warmest spot in the UK, they clearly like taking both titles of warm and cold. Quite unprecedented amounts of warmth up there in recent weeks, likely to be the warmest on record.
  9. You can throw Summer 1940 in the mix too, with CET's 16.4, 15.1, 15.6. Averaging 15.7C As you say, quite an unusual pattern in the mid 20th century.
  10. What are the chances of June coming in cooler than May, has this ever happened before?
  11. Addicks Fan 1981 knowing the CFS, it'll probably be the exact opposite
  12. Metwatch A very strange pattern. Extensive northern blocking but still exceptionally mild. I guess if that low pressure was anchored east of us, it'd be much colder.. instead, it being west is feeding warm SW winds.
  13. This May definitely has June vibes to it, almost like someone flicked the switch from winter to summer. A few days before May started it was as cold as some days in winter. What fascinates me is the mild nights, something uncommon in early May. As @Scorcher eluded to, warmth in May is usually tempered with cooler nights. May 2018 and 2020 a good example. I guess this month is a warmer May 2022.
  14. LetItSnow! I think early warmth in general is a bad omen for summer. Even years with warm April's (2007,2011,2020) had pretty mediocre summers.. 2014 to a lesser extent but still quite chilly, especially August. Of course, this year might be different and we see a continuation of this exceptional warmth, won't surprise me one bit.
  15. What are the analogues for warm May's and the following summers? Do they normally precede warmer, drier summers or cooler ones.
  16. A lot more comfortable today, upper teens and sunshine is all I need tbh. Hope it stays this way till September
  17. Derecho Honestly I'm not surprised, we've seen exceptional warmth in the last 18 months and this month certainly isn't holding back. In the last year we've had June, September and February come in record breaking status.. that's not to say the other months were cool, October, December and March were also very mild. This year is certainly looking like a record breaking one, unless the summer and autumn is cool which is quite unlikely. Just wondering when a shift to a cooler regime will take place, it has to break at some point.
  18. The warmth hasn't been too bad, actually quite enjoying a few days of unbroken sunshine. However, I'm not enjoying the mild nights. If the minima were in the mid to high single digits, it'd be much more palatable. That said it's nothing compared to those exceptionally warm nights we saw in July 2022.. the year that made me invest in a portable AC.
  19. Interesting, it's 1986 with the numbers swapped around.
  20. CryoraptorA303 Definitely, the incessant rain we've been plagued by since September has been tiresome. Would've been great if all that rain fell as snow during winter.
  21. Once again, Oban Airport is the warmest spot today with 24C. They must be quite perplexed up there given they hardly see that in the summer, let alone May.
  22. I can already see this month becoming exceptionally mild.. unless we see a cooler second half similar to April.
  23. 21C here, quite the shock given this time last week we were stuck in single digits.
