They never favoured cold. They said (and are still saying) there's a chance but wet weather will probably win out. They have not actually forecast cold. just talking about probabilities. Even in January they say it's only a low likelihood... at this point in time anyway
The fact that North America is unusually mild I take as a positive for us. I normally look at Marquette in upper Michigan, they are forecast +9c this week where normally they would be sub zero. My train of thought is that the cold must go somewhere so why not us?

Aye they do , but if you remember last third of Dec was going to be cold then New year , now mid January
Got to be right sooner or later then! But joking aside things feel different this time.

No idea. But it's a model. By the respected ECM. And this is the MOD thread so thought I'd mention it
Met Office mention mid January cold too so I'm all ears!

Dunno if it’s OK to have a general moan in here (I’m sure someone will say if it isn’t) and as newbie I apologise in advance if this has cropped up before, but something is seriously grinding my gears…
TV weather presenters clearly no longer have set criteria with which to describe temperatures, so tonight for instance the local weather guy on BBC Spotlight described overnight lows of 5-8c as ‘cold’. 5-8c isn’t even cold as a daily max in Dec, in fact it’s close to the climatological average.
Bad as this was, sadly I’ve heard far worse. One morning a few weeks ago Isobel Lang said ‘ it really is bitterly cold out there this morning, with temps close to freezing in some places’.
I could go on and on….I won’t, as I’m sure others must have noticed some of the ludicrous language often used to describe absolutely bog standard temperatures.
To be fair I’m sure I allow it to wind me up far to much for my own good/sanity, but rather than screaming at the telly or worse still launching something at the screen, I thought I’d get it off my chest and lower my BP a bit in here.
Agree completely. I find that most of the BBC presenters are annoying in one form or another. Currently my worst 2 are Darren Bett, mild lover and Louise Lear who I believe gets dressed in the dark!

Days of cold and gloom, 0c all day yesterday followed by cold rain, not even a flake can be produced. Same hype as last 20 years in the model thread, Thursday snow turns to Friday, turns to Saturday, blah, blah. Reality is 9 times out of 10, dry, cold, grey borefest with a wet fart of a breakdown (imby). Utter dog dirt. Used to be enjoyable variety of weather in this country but now its no storms in summer, no snow in winter, no wind storms, etc.
Can't stand the cold these days (used to love it when younger) anyway but if it has to be endured, at least give us some snow. Bring on the mild!
Oh and just 10 quid a day gas to get through this epic cold spell. Zzzz.
I understand your feelings and frustrations completely and you're not the only person feeling disappointed I imagine. The weather will do what it will and nothing we can do will change it. Looking at the model thread is enjoyable but time consuming, it seems late nights everyone is happy but depressed 6 hours later. Maybe do what I intend to do and give the model thread a swerve for a week or so?

Hi Dennis, can you explain to me what we are looking at there?

Dennis, apologies but I'm confused again. I am aware that Norway is cold and snowy. Do you have a message for the UK or are you rubbing our noses in it?!

STOP LOOK LISTEN!
Investigate the ecm ens and tell yourself this..
Is this a normal looking NH profile for this time of the year?
Look how many ens have TPV away from Canada and Greenland!
Look how many are still keen to build heights towards the N/NW
And finally I do not think this as been a normal year, and I feel that next year will again be getting us scratch our heads.
This cold snap could have legs...there is not unanimous agreement between all the data to suggest we will be going mild and staying that way!
The plot thickens good folks.
All part of the fun that makes model watching so fascinating. But you're right, something feels different this time.

How cold is it likely to be? Forecast at lunchtime showed temperatures of 5 or 6 degrees during daytime. They didn't mention night temperatures.

I wish the BBC would drop Meteogroup and go back to the Met Office. The forecast seemed much more detailed in those days.

It certainly feels very different this year. Looking forward to the BBC forecast at lunchtime. It will be a real headache for them I think.
