Barn owls of Chat Moss, Irlam
RebsAbbo replied to Weather-history's topic in Space, Science & nature
They’re amazing pictures. I think we’ve had quite a decline in barn owls in our area. Think I’ve maybe only had 2 sightings this year (apart from a young dead bird sadly). You’re very lucky to have such beautiful birds nearby. -
I missed it ️. Drove through the heavy rain heading to Lincolnshire, leaving it behind in Yorkshire. Lots of surface water on roads, but dry once over the bridge. Still very wet on return home & garden well battered down! No watering needed tonight. Our wettest day of the season so far I suspect. A nice clear evening now though.

Really useful, thanks

Read the forecast this morning & showed no precipitation all day, high temps & low risk of storms. Well for the last 1/2-1hr it’s been very sultry with some dark non-descript cloud cover. Checked the forecast again and suddenly it’s changed to 0.54mm precip & 42% storm risk. The whole world has changed around me whilst I was hoovering!! Oh, and we’ve just had 12 drops of rain. Think that was the storm

We have a lot of cloud cover with the sun trying to break through, but temps are very warm, current reading 24c in the garden. From the forecasts earlier in the week I did not expect such a pleasant day today (thought we would have lost the heat by now). Just goes to show how things change day on day.

On the dog walk this morning, the car temp stated 21c & that’s on the exposed top. I’m struggling to find a cloud in the sky! Back in the more sheltered garden my temp gauge is reading just over 24c. And before anybody asks, I’ve got my proper instruments up now in their rightful place (they’re not particularly highly technical instruments, just the basics - thermo & barometer) but I have calibrated them as best I can. I think the temp gauge is accurate to within up to 2 degrees. And yes, they’re in the shade, 1.5m off ground, got good airflow etc etc. So let’s see what readings I can get going forward. Actually don’t want the storms to come this far anyway, Wales & midlands (& SE if they’re lucky) can keep them for now thank you very much.

But you know how quickly the forecasts can change so you can only be hopeful. Just make sure you’ve got your ‘top sheet’….is that a technical term? (I don’t do camping!).I just remember my first year at Glastonbury and someone who was in charge of our tent didn’t bring the ‘top sheet’ & it rained. It was very wet. I ended up sleeping in the car!
