  1. Well to be exact its a combination of the cold snaps coming from Siberia heading south to the Balkans and eventually meeting the Aegean sea. A few hours before the snow falls start we typically get extremely dry conditions in the E and SE of the country. Dew points fall dramatically, eventually turning negative and when the cold fronts meet the warm closed Aegean sea the Aegean acts as a large lake. Essentially it is pretty similar to a lake effect. Precipitation falls violently with extreme rain rates in many cases. The usual high Ts of SE Greece fall only as the rapidity of the snow falls intensifies. But we are talking about South Greece here. You need exceptional circumstances to actually see low Ts in S. Greece that is why with positive Ts we get some impressive snow falls specially in Crete! These snow falls are short lived but very impressive. Within a few hours Ts recover dramatically and snow thaws almost immediately especially if you are located in SE Greece. Typically snow may settle in coastal areas of S Greece for only a few hours. There are of course areas in the extreme SE of Greece that almost never experience this kind of weather. For instance the capital of Kasos island, Fri has never seen settled snow in its meteorological history. The port of Rhodes and Kastelorizo island have never also recorded snow. Basically the SE Dodecanese is almost never influenced by the Aegean stream effect. Areas that are typically influenced by the Aegean stream effect include anything E of the Pindus mountain range and S of Larisa down to Crete.
  2. Not the coldest. Far from it! Only March was really cold. Yes the rest of the winter last year was below average but only slightly. You are confusing the extreme snowfalls seen in North Athens with the Ts. Eastern Greece has the almost unique peculiarity of seeing significant snowfalls with positive Ts, especially in the South and the islands. This is due to the Aegean stream! We have even seen pretty intense snowfalls with Ts as high as 7C or 8C believe it or not!Specially in the South. Last year downtown Athens only briefly dropped to 0C while South Athens never had a freeze despite seeing significant snowfalls in downtown and north areas.
  3. Merry Xmas everyone! Today Athens rose to 20C locally. December 2022 will probably be the warmest on record for Greece. We still have areas in the South that record average maximum Ts at 20C so far for December... https://web.archive.org/web/20221225101637/https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/kastellorizo/NOAAYR.TXT https://web.archive.org/web/20221225121945/https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/kalamata/NOAAYR.TXT https://web.archive.org/web/20221225122905/https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/chaniacenter/NOAAYR.TXT
  4. Unlike the UK, in Greece December is on track of becoming one of warmest Decembers on record for downtown Athens. According to the National Observatory observations dating from the 19th century this month will be if not the warmest December on record then easily in top 3 or top 5 warmest Decembers from late 19th century. We have met stations right now in Greece registering monthly average minimums as high as 17C! This is crazy for December even by Greece's standards.
  5. Pretty hot December so far in Greece. Yesterday Crete registered locally 26.2C at the National Observatory station in Chania
  6. Greece is currently experiencing a late October hot spell. It is already 33C locally in south Crete according to the Davis stations of the island....and its only 11 am local time now in Greece. It's going to remain hot across Greece the next 3-4 days.
  7. Probably a record breaking night for October in South Greece! 3 am local time and Ts in Crete are up to 34.3C due to strong foehn winds
  8. A very hot October night for South Greece Its 2 am local time and the met station of Lindos is still hovering over 32C!
  9. 39.1C Greece's max today in Rethymno, Crete according to the National Observatory of Athens met station https://web.archive.org/web/20221001135152/https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/fragmapotamon/
  10. Very hot October start for Greece. The National Observatory of Athens station in Lindos is currently at 36.1C and its only 12pm local time...
  11. It seems that October will start very hot in Greece. Locally it could even reach up to 38C
  12. It was a really rainy August. Areas that have never seen rain during August did so this year. Locally in Athens there were areas with around 90mm of rain when the average is barely 5-10mm for most places. Also considerably cooler in Athens with mean maxes barely reaching 32-33C when it is usually around 34.5-35.0C
  13. Just to add that I found suburbs even in Metropolitan Taipei that have lower average annual temperatures than Lindos! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhonghe_District#Geography_and_climate
  14. All time low in Lindos for August was after all 24.0C on the 27th of August. Also August 2022 has been Greece's coldest August the past 30 years.
  15. Due to the bad weather in Greece, it appears that the station of the National Observatory of Athens in Lindos has dropped for the first time in its meteorological history below 25.0C in August earlier today. The new absolute minimum temperature in Lindos for August now stands at 24.2C The station is online from 2014 https://penteli.meteo.gr/stations/lindos/
  16. Greece is experiencing some very rare August rain! Stations that nearly never get rain during August such as the Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands yesterday saw rainfall. Most notable in Santorini with 27mm, where it almost never rains during August. The met station of Lindos in Rhodes from the National Observatory of Athens registered its first rainfall in its history during August a few hours ago with 0.4mm. An important note on Lindos. It is currently the warmest area annually in geographical Europe with a stunning average annual temperature of around 22°C according to the official climate normals posted by the National Observatory of Athens https://www.meteo.gr/climate/ Mind you that Lindos at 36N latitude beats even the warmest stations of the Canary islands (which are not in geographical Europe anyways) while it is also warmer year round than other much southern coastal areas such as Cairo, Tel Aviv, Port Said, Alexandria and even areas located below 30N latitude such as Nanjo and Kuningami in Okinawa or Daytona Beach in Florida! This is due to the constant almost year round foehn winds Lindos receives as the N winds from W Rhodes move towards the SE of the island. During the summer months Lindos experiences 24/7 foehn winds due to the prevalence of the Meltemi winds in Greece. This results in average summer temperatures that are extreme by European standards. It even beats Red Sea locations such as Suez!
  17. I do think fan aspirated ones are the most accurate or among the most accurate in the world, surpassing Stevenson Screen accuracy when frequently maintained and properly calibrated.
  18. If you properly maintain and calibrate a Davis fan aspirated station while following the installment guidelines then readings from such stations are virtually the most accurate from all known met stations. Even if installed in the most urban environments then you would get extremely reliable data. Various met offices (I remember a few papers from Japanese and Korean met offices) that suggest fan aspirated stations in urban environments are probably the most useful tools for determining reliable weather observations in the places where people actually live.
  19. I am now more confident that at least London really breached 40C yesterday. I found the extremely reliable data of the Davis fan aspirated station from the WeatherLink Network in North Harrow, London which registered yesterday 39.8C. That's the highest temperature I can find so far anywhere in the UK from a Davis fan aspirated station. Bear in mind, I have just started scrutinizing the Davis Network so its possible we can find Ts over 40C from other fan aspirated stations. There are values of over 41C in West London yesterday but they are from passive Davis stations.
  20. I don't think there is a specific technical reason for this given that T's around the 40C mark was hit in various areas of the UK. That's probably the extreme limit temperatures can reach in the UK given the synoptic conditions.
  21. Below all official stations in the UK registering 40 and over yesterday. I guess we will have to wait to see which ones the Met Office accepts Coningsby 40.3°C Waddington 40.3°C St. James's Park 40.2°C Heathrow 40.2°C Pitsford 40.2°C Kew Gardens 40.1°C Gringley on the Hill 40.1°C Cranwell 40.0°C Northolt 40.0°C
  22. So to summarize, a total of 9 official stations throughout the UK so far have registered 40C and over yesterday
  23. What time are we supposed to have the Cambridge Botanic Gardens value for yesterday? This one might take the record
  24. Yeah, I wouldn't pay too much attention to that. Obviously 40s is something new in the UK. The Met Office needs to check them thoroughly. Just keep checking the official twitter account of the Met Office and we will soon know. Northolt, Kew Gardens, Heathrow, Waddington, St. James's Park, Gringley all registered 40+ and are all Stevenson Screen. There must be good reasons to reject their values. Coningsby on the other hand is passive automatic. I would reject this value far easier.
