  1. It's rain out to sea; you can see the shadow effect of Beachy Head very nicely on this. The snow above Brighton must be evaporating before getting to the ground.
  2. It's quite extraordinary. We'ew in the lee of Beachy Head here, and the storm is actually politely going round it! So Marie is getting a bit in Brighton, and Newhaven and Seaford may well get something but, even though the DP is just below zero and thus the gun is cocked and ready to go, we aren't getting a race here!
  3. Is anyone managing to get any work done in the whole of the south east? I'm working full time just keeping up with the posts here
  4. Still dry down here on the E Sussex coast. Promising though; the radar is Barbie pink, AT is 3.1C, dewpoint 0.1C so when precipitation arrives it might well be flurries. Steady easterly at about 7mph, so a bit of a wind chill!
  5. I used to go across there most days when I worked in Brighton. Warren Road often got a belt of snow when hardly anything else did. As you can tell from my avatar I fit snow tyres in the winter, and of course up past the Nuffield everyone was sliding around like Bambi. I wasn't and was able to drive perfectly normally. Cue lots of horns and flashing headlights for my crazily dangerous speeding...
  6. It was just cold drizzle in Bexhill this afternoon (I was trotting in and out of the Glynde Gap shops) and the dew point has actually gone up a bit, so we'll see how the next 24 hours goes.
  7. On a different topic entirely, is there a cloud cover and SLP chart anywhere? I sometimes have trouble working out (sheer newbieness, I'm sure) where and how dense cloud cover is as I scan the pressure charts. Any suggestions, please?
  8. Monday 15th looks our best bet, but the patterns are swirling around like a magician's cloak! My best wishes to Tom - treatment for prostate cancer is amazing these days, especially the modern targeted radiotherapy.
  9. That's the point of the expert. They know what is wood and what is trees. MattH did an excellent post earlier today (which probably got buried in the avalanche of posts on the winter thread) and I have to be honest, what he called obvious and classic were, from a perspective of little knowledge not either of those. Of note, he wasn't surprised how December turned out and thinks January will turn cold - as the graphs clearly (!) show that. They may, but it's his deep understanding of the topic that allows him to say that. I'm considered an expert in my own field, but coming away from what you know well to see how brilliantly others handle data in their field is humbling and a good reminder of our own limitations.
  10. Happy New Year all Just back from seeing family in Cornwall. Our normal 5 and half hour journey started at 09:30 and ended at 18:18 on Tuesday - quite the marathon. The weather was wet, wet, wet all the time we were there, and Henk charged in, kicking vehicles around as we came up the A30. One lane had been closed near Bideford, and our satnav suggested going off and through the town. Unfortunately, so did everyone else's, and we were stuck in gridlock. Initially, I tried to divert down a very muddy road, but soon realised lots of others had and we found ourselves stationary in a sunken lane with high trees either side. Traffic ahead was not moving. The wind had been gusty, but it now really whipped up, and the large trees along the lane started swaying seriously. A branch the size of my wrist with a large ray of twigs and leaves clunked onto the car in front. The driver didn't get out to check! I wasn't happy at all as I looked up at the huge trunks now flailing above me, and reversed back a car's length or so to the car behind. Ten seconds later a branch crashed down where my wife would have been. Then a smaller tree crashed on the road where the bonnet had been. Fortunately, that was it and the wind started to abate, but it was extremely worrying.
  11. That was quick! Merry (what's left of it!) Christmas to you and everyone here. The most likely reason is that a a cookie has got corrupted on your phone and appears to the server as enormous. You need to clear the browser cookie cache. What's that in English? If you let them, many web sites will store little bits of information on your equipment - to show you are logged in, for example. These are rather cheesily called cookies. When you open the website, it asks (in the background) about your equipment at your end, and one of the classes of things it looks for is these cookies. When it asks your phone, it gets a nonsense answer back for some reason (probably because the cookie has been damaged, known as corruption, and it throws the error message you see. The cure is to clear the bad cookie from your store on your phone. You won't know which it is, so you might as well simply remove them all. It's a good idea to do this every so often anyway. It means websites now won't know anything about you, so you'll get lots of requests to store cookies again until it all settles down. How do you so this? Depends on your phone and the browser you are using.
  12. If anyone knows an email or other contact details for snowrye this message needs forwarding! Depends on your phone and the browser you are using. From your screenshot this looks like an Android. Tap on the three vertical dots on the right. On the dropdown tap on history. A list of the websites you recently visited appears and at the top it says clear browsing data... Touch this, and you'll see various options. You are interested in 'cookies and site data'. Make sure this is ticked. Tap on 'clear data' at the bottom. the phone will think for a moment before showing the history page again. Click on the cross at the top right and you should be back in the browser and it should now accept your request to visit. I'm afraid I have no other contact details for you, but someone else might and be able to get this message to you from here.
  13. I know it's only less than 48 hours later, but it seems like an aeon ago! I have only just got to this request. Here's the animation.
  14. Hi team Here's chatGPT's current take on the big day. It's - well, today Groundhogged! On Christmas Day 2023 in the United Kingdom, the weather is expected to be a mix of conditions. Here’s what you can anticipate: Temperature: Ranging from 35°F to 42°F. Weather: The day will start with mist, followed by patchy rain possible, and later transitioning to overcast. However, there will be some sunny intervals as well. Precipitation: Minimal, with a 0% chance of rain during most of the day. Wind: Gentle winds, varying between 2 to 12 miles per hour. Humidity: Ranging from 72% to 96%. Sunrise: The sun will rise at 08:05. Sunset: The sun will set at 15:56, providing approximately 7.5 hours of sunlight1. While there’s a small chance of wintry weather in some parts of the UK, including the possibility of snow and ice, the overall forecast leans toward unsettled conditions and average temperatures for this time of year2. So, bundle up in your coat, winter hat, boots, and scarf, and enjoy the festive spirit!
  15. Unexpected mist yesterday evening at Wakehurst for their stunning Glow Wild winter walk meaning that the installations took on a fairy tale ethereal look. It also has the UK's tallest Christmas Tree. Absolutely wonderful event - do try to get to it.
  16. Crisp and cold start here, too - and then the clouds rolled in . At least most of the rain evaporated before it got to 2m above ground level.
  17. Good luck, Tom, with your test. Hope you aren't too sore this morning. Aching nuts is much worse than numb ones. Back to weather - if anyone thinks it hass been a bit wet, it has rained here 20 out of the last 30 days! We have had 136mm of rain in that time, or or over 5 1/4 inches in old money. Now that's nuts!
  18. Bye old thread! I let the dog out tonight, and noticed it was still dry. Not five minutes later, he was barking to be let in - and was saturated! Absolute cloudburst.
