  1. That line from Essex to IoW is likely to cause high level anxiety in some posters, Nick, depending on what part of Essex you start your pen from!

Surely it all depends on the wind direction? if it's from the NE then parts of Essex southwards into Kent, The Sussex's will be largely effected but slightly east of North east of this then maybe more inland areas of the above perhaps Suffolk, again a bit of radar watching will be needed.

  2. weather for this weekend looks like it is backtracking into a disappointment from what I have seen, reading posts and seeing TV forecasts - Saturday might see some convective showery stuff from the North sea and Sunday which is still up in the air looks like bringing only light snow inland and maybe sleety/rain nearer the coasts! - but who knows might all change.

  3. looks like rain here on the coastal regions over the weekend - like to see where this milder air is coming from, I've heard people say the milder air is embedded - embedded from where? I cannot remember in previous history of easterlies producing rain on the coast (certainly not on the essex/suffolk coast) and snow inland! anybody have any thoughts?

  4. So we can expect rain rather than snow near the coast then over the weekend? so much for a severe cold spell, surely the continent with its associated snow cover will be cold enough to keep the lower surfaces cold enough for snow, can't remember to many instances over years gone by when we have had rain/sleet on the coast from an easterly and snow further inland - trying to think!

  5. Whilst its still not settling (and this is really getting on my nerves now!) here Upminster is that bit urther inland and thus you may see a good 3-5cms coming down in the space of the next 90 mins or so there, totals wil ldrop away greatly as you get clsoer to the coast...

I wonder whats happening in SE Essex right now and whether they are having the same issues as me with snow not settling...I'm guessing the ESE flow earlier rose temps higher then just inland by the Thames and this is still having an effect even though winds are shifting...

Snowing heavily at the moment KW, temp 0.5C dew point 0.3C - sorry to hear your misfortune, up to now the same as you - barely a cm.

  6. Snow in Norwich in the end didn't amount to that much and thawed on concrete surfaces afterwards, though there has been very little thawing on the grass, where there is about 2-3cm. However, I'm aware that this is more than some people have got, plus of course we had 4-5 inches up in the Geordie heartlands of the North East.

There may be an increasing number of snow showers overnight as that NE'ly takes hold, leading up to some heavy and prolonged ones tomorrow by the looks of it.

TWS whats you view on the weekend for this region - I hear now that there might not be all that much convective stuff now but just light snow not really adding much? - have you any thoughts for the weekend. Cheers

  7. Saw the Look East forecast from that Julie bird and she said about a couple of cms of the ppn moving down from the north in an hour or so whilst tomorrow a little feature will move in from the NE over Norfolk and move southwards and there could be up to 5cms or so over our region (The National forecast at 13.25 said it was a feature they were keeping an 'eye on'). Not much mentioned about the weekend apart from an icy easterly.

Might get a cm out of that lot on the Costa Del Burnham then. :cold:

  8. Well as for Sat/sun stil lbig model uncertainty, the GFS is less keen then the UKMO/ECM but something to watch...

However I'm not at all happy with the set-up progged, looks to me like a light snowfall presistant snowfall set-up, which won't be good enough for coastal locations because the system that brings up the possible precip is a front that has some milder air embedded above it...should be good inland though IF it makes it!

Nick, yeah exactly but I feel really bad and unhappy for everyone else, esp the guys to my east who got far less then even me, it relaly has been a horrid spell of weather given everywhere else north, west and eventually south after this band slows right down...

As you say plenty more snow events to come but none really stand out for S.Essex, esp more western parts of the county which never ever do well from NE airflows.

Surely before or after that band of ppn gets on the shores of southern England we will see showery activity on the windward coastal regions? - why is nothing becoming straight forward in regards to set-ups, where has this milder embedded air come from?

Sorry about the Spanish inquisition but just when you think you might have some synoptics that will suit your location then yet another problem crops up!

  9. Our country isn't exactly big yet it is unbelievable what variations we have in snowfall from area to area, and seems strange about the dew points being below zero yet getting a thaw? - I too would swap this troughy nonsense fro some god old power house convectivity off the North Sea but saying that Burnham would still miss out due to the wind not quite being in the right direction or for some reason or another - whinge over!
