Wild squall went through here about 30 minutes ago here in Rugby. Bins were hurled down the street.
My dad just called to say he hadn’t seen anything like it before in Northampton as parts of the roof in the building he was in were blown off.
-
Snowing fairly well here now
-
I had completely written off today's snow potential yesterday evening but i'm following a bit more closely now. We will see.
-
Had a high of -2.6C here today. Can't remember the last time it stayed that low. Maybe Dec 2010.
Very impressed with the snow showers penetrating well inland and giving us a decent covering.
All eyes on the low to the SW.
-
First proper boom of thunder heard. Frequent flashes to my south
-
2.8C here and raining but hoping that over the next hour the transition will be complete to some settling snow
-
Frequent lightning to my east. I even saw an anvil crawler. It's been a while since I saw one of those
-
Heavy rain but none of it is electrified in this region.

Yeah quite a few near misses. I miss the pre-2006 active period.Yes, with the exception of CENTRAL Midlands, such as my area. The storms on Saturday missed this area, literally just missed by 5 miles. Today the storms took a similar path, except a bit further West. The East & West Midlands has had more luck with storms than Central.

Storm to my west. Can here the thunder
-
typical the only one with a little life still in it is possibly heading my way hope it misses or dies a death
perhaps i'll get lucky and it wont last too long if i see it at all
Certainly more active than a standard thundery shower. Four or five booms now

Storm just starting here. Very dark, squally winds and thunder

The amazing thing about this winter is that there just hasn't been any potential marginal events that have even come close to showing consistently on various charts.
Most of us are well accustomed to being let down many times throughout a typical winter, but to have so little on offer this time around is remarkable. I don't think I could even consider myself as being let down as such, just disappointed with the general pattern.

Seeing that spectacular pic from Hereford, I would have thought that (even with a little light pollution) I should be able to see something..hm. It is wonderfully clear. Perfect conditions too. Such a shame.

I seem to have been a little more sheltered than those further west and east thus far. Topped out at 48 and it has died down a little again. Having said that, the squalls do seem to have a habit of picking up again after a lull.
-
Highest gust so far today is 45mph. I had a 49mph gust on Wednesday. Wonder if I can hit 50.
The 10 minute wind speed picked up to 26mph which is fairly strong for here and higher than Wednesday.
-
Sustained 170kt winds! That's about 195mph.
Does anyone else think the estimated central pressure of 895mb is probably too high? Sub-900mb typhoons have been rare in the West Pacific in recent years but they used to be much more frequent (not sure why - the use of aircraft reconnaissance perhaps). Certainly with the wind field not being abnormally large I would expect a typhoon supporting winds of this strength to be threatening Tip's record of 870mb.
An astonishing 862 mb on the noaa link http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/2013/adt/text/HAIYAN_Y-list.txt . Hard to get an accurate figure without the physical observations that take place in hurricanes.

I was wondering if anyone knew the record high for an overnight low temp ?
I remember reading a while ago that it was around 24C at Jersey Airport. I would have thought that London may have taken the record during the Aug 2003 heatwave.

I missed the main storm to my south about an hour ago. Had one rumble and a brief period of heavy rain.

First year maths isn't too bad. Although as you mentioned, I did further maths and a lot of what we did in that came up. The 2nd year maths is horrendous, especially PDEs (I got 26% in it...). But the maths involved in the Meteorology modules isn't too bad at all, it rarely goes beyond relatively simple differentiation/integration and a bit of fiddly algebra. It's the knowing what parts to manipulate to get what equation you need which is the tricky bit.
Hope you enjoy university life anyway and I shall see you around when I'm back from the states!
Ah, I see. That's ok then. I'll worry about the 2nd year when it comes around. I don't even know what PDEs are lol. I think i'll be ok on the differentiation/integration, may need to brush up on my algebra a bit.
Thanks. Looking forward to it now. Got my results today and I have met my offer. I have emailed the admissions team. Just waiting for them to make my offer unconditional. Have a great time. It'll be amazing. Get on the storms (and snow) !

And I can't really comment on the content of the MSc, but the BSc/MMet course are very Maths heavy. The Maths ruined my mark completely this year
That's got me worried. Access Maths is no where near as intensive as A-level (let alone the further maths you did !). I think the first year is going to be a bit of a battle for me.

The cell to my NE is developing quite impressively/
-
Best of luck in Nebraska. You're going to need it. Maybe try and stray just outside the border lol
-
Wow that's an amzing supercell structure.
Would absolutely love to be there in the core too. Epic.
I'm in the same position to you Mark, maybe next year if I can save enough money through the first year of uni. Hmm.
