  1. Do I go to work in Chichester tomorrow or be sensible? Trains haven't coped with this so I expect delays! Trains + snow = Carnage!

I reckon I would sooner risk delays on the trains than the buses personally. They don't slide so far!!

Thankfully we don't have any major hills on the coastal strip. pity anyone trying to cross the South Downs tonight though! Bury Hill and Duncton Hill roads closed. Only way to London would be up from Worthing but then Findon is dodgy at the moment so perhaps would have to travel as far as Brighton to go up the motorway.

EDIT. Looking at the M23 webcam here http://www.theargus....il.6071213/ am not too sure even that would be a good way up to London.

OOPS link doesn't work. Better try the Argus websiste http://www.theargus.co.uk/ and check the traffic alert page for M23

  2. Just seen met office have changed their forecast. Apparently the snow will stop here in couple of hours and won't extend to 3-6am tomorrow morning.

I wouldn't be too sure they are correct on that liam. Look at the radar.

    http://www.raintoday.co.uk/

That band of snow in the Channel has just started to move more northward. At least it seems so to me. If that northward movement continues then I can see more areas couldl get snow again I reckon. Someone said today would be now-casting. How true that has proved to be.

  3. I saw gritters up and down the A259 between bognor and chichester a few times today but it was treacherous on the way home, not sure why but I wondered if the wind had blown a lot of the grit back off the road as that stretch is so exposed. Certainly the snow was blowing about a lot. Someone had crashed there and there were lots of people skidding about as it was icing up really badly.

Hi emg, I think the main problem was that blizzard conditions prevailed for about an hour, (certainly here on the edge of Bognor and close to the sea) and I think it just overwhelmed anything that was put on the road. Scenario is grit + heavy snow = water on road, + sub-zero wind chill = ice on road + continuing heavy snow = ice covered by snow. Result = very dangerous driving conditions. Polar Bear is right, if you don't have to drive tonight or tomorrow then please be wise and stay home. It will soon start thawing late tomorrow I would have thought so consider your loved ones before you drive in the morning..

  4. Roads are chaotic here between Worthing and Arundel A27 closed, part of A29 closed etc, seems like no gritters have been out! Maybe they were taken in by the forecast this aftrnoon which I heard on the radio whilst driving through a snowstorm that there would be 'a few light snow showers in the south' LOL!!

Just shows how the media can cock it all up - no doubt if they wittered on about a major snow fall there would have be sweet FA, so I'm happy they called it wrong, it's been briliant down here since about lunch time - just sad that it will be so short lived. sorry.gif

    BTW: Still snowing good.gif

Don't know why they weren't gritting in your area, they were out in the town centre of Bognor at 3:00pm today. However I think the snow was maybe too much for the grit that was laid. Daughter reported seeing a car facing totally the wrong way on the dual carriageway close to Tesco in Bognor after skidding in the snow. Very icy underneath the covering of snow.

  5. Snow lighter now but still falling. Just been in the back garden to measure the depth, 2 inches/5cm. didn't expect it to be that much! Front garden, (far more exposed) is 1 inch/2.5cm. So unsure how much precipitation we have actually had today, especially as so much melted before 4.00pm when temps dropped below zero. Currently still -1.7C

Hmmmm.... just checked radar. Snow looks like stopping soon I reckon as the band is steadily edging it's way eastwards.

  6. Well you be grateful for that 2mm, some places have seen nothing at all, any snow at this time of the year is a bonus surely?

Here we have had a fair bit fall, but not much has settled, everytime it stopped today the dusting melted, but I am more than happy to have seen snow fall, even if there isn't much to show for it drinks.gif

Hi SSC. If you got snow in Southsea in March then this is one BIG event. From what I recall Southsea so often misses out on the snow. Glad you got some this time. I nearly got the bus to Pompey today but chose Chichester instead, looked like it was a wise choice.

  7. Definitely worse east of here, heard they didn't grit roads! tsk tsk!

    • All Brighton and Hove Bus services are suspended due to snow.
    • There are accidents on the A27 by the Sussex Pad, Shoreham, on the slip road at Hollingbury and at the junction with the A270 Lewes Road, Brighton.
    • The Met Office is predicting 10cm of snow will fall across Sussex by 9am tomorrow

Oh sorry AWD, forgot to enter current temp. -1.7C here at the moment and STILL snowing, everything is very well covered now the temps have dropped. Wish the wind had dropped too. Still gusting to Force 8.

  8. I can't see 2-5cms happening for here tonight. Would be lovely but I really don't see it. I'm not being negative but looking at the radar can't see where it is coming from. I can see Sussex getting some but not here.

Same here, I can see East Sussex getting more tonight but it looks like it is slowly edging away from West Sussex.so I wouldn't be surprised if it dried up soon, everything very icy indeed now though. That is mainly why the roads I mentioned are closed I think, both very steep hills on the South Downs and conditions will be treacherous with the continuing strong winds drifting the lying snow onto the roads.

  9. You stay safe cf.. As I said I wouldn't he surprised if you start getting power cuts only in that it doesn't take much down there for them to happen! Told my parents to stay inside.. smile.png

Dog been walked so his only chance of a pee is the garden now. smile.png Plenty of candles at home and lots of blankets ready for the bed if leccy does go off. Glad you warned your parents. i went to Chi this afternoon and got soaked and perishing cold waiting for a bus home.

  10. Not sure when this was issued but I see the south coast east of Chichester is now under an orange warning .. Stay safe peeps. Keep those phones charged and get the torches ready I wouldn't be surprised if there will power cuts tonight ...

Hi Polar Bear., not surprised about the orange warning. Further East I have heard of two roads blocked by fallen trees and one road blocked by snow. That particular road though is almost right on the coast and judging by the blizzard we had in Bognor for around an hour I am not sure I would want to be out in it further East of here as it is supposed to be worse there..

    Just North of Chichester.

    A285 Duncton

    A285 Live travel

A285 both ways closed, hazardous driving conditions due to snow and ice at Beechwood Lane. Callers report the road is impassable.

  11. Lovely cloudscape outside my window! smile.png

Wow! Hard to believe it is the same country as me. Still blowing a blizzard here and the annoying thing is that it is sticking to the windows so I can't watch in comfort. GRRR. I was cursing this snow earlier when I was cold and wet, well practically hypothermic actually, but now I have a good meal inside me and no reason to go out into the blizzard i am suddenly loving it. Ah the fickleness of women. smile.png

  12. A full on blizzard blowing at the moment. Just got back from walking the dog and had to walk half a mile out of my way to avoid walking into the wind and snow. Settling even on the paths and roads now. Please take care anyone where these conditions are happening, it is very dangerous with the snow freezing on contact with the ground now and making walking dangerous. Temperature now down to -1C.

Amazing walking across the fields to see the snow swirling in great clouds as the strong winds blow it into drifts. Not seen weather like this since I lived in Scotland in the '60's.

  13. Been snowing ever since I woke at 6:00am. For anyone feeling jealous then don't be, it is absolutely horrible outside in this weather. Horizontal snow that is blowing so hard that it isn't even settling properly on paths and roads. Also here in Bognor we only reached a max temp of 0.5C and it has been mainly very small flakes, just a lot of it blowing around. Heavier at times but even though I am a total snow lover normally I reiterate, this weather isn't fun at all. Temp now down to 0C and things starting to freeze, got showered by the gritter on the walk home just to add to my woes.

  14. looking at the French Radar http://www.weatherca...dar/france.html it looks like it will be band after band setting up, you can see why The Channel Islands are in for a pounding. Had this been predicted a week ago I would have been tempted to take a trip over there for this. Could be epic! and its March so should be gone fairly quickly.

Karlos, many thanks for that link to French radar. Looking very good now. may develop more as it crosses the channel too. Frequently does at this time of the year. In fact for Bognor this scenario of snow heading up from France is usually our best chance of snow all year. By the way, March snow not unusual here. Brother and sister both born March 21st 6 years apart and snow both times they were born and have often seen it on their birthdays.

  15. The radar on http://www.raintoday.co.uk is showing a large area of precip heading toward Jersey but for folks (like me) a little further east I am pleased to see the band seems to have started spreading further eastward at last. Now I can finally see where this forecast snow is likely to be coming from.

Edit: Drat, can't get that link to work properly.

  16. He's a nice man really and you are always welcome to chat to me and the rest of us as long as you share your reports. As per the TV forecast I saw earlier today, you may be in the sweetspot, more especially late tomorrow into Tuesday. I can't see your fingers even getting luke warm for a few days.

You are right about the fingers, walked the dog this evening. BRRRR! And tomorrow is forecast to be colder. OH HELP. Oh I would love the snow but daren't hope. Only one day of snow fell here this winter but it was a lot.clapping.gif and it did last 3 days so not complaining. By the way, I know he is a nice man really and I never reached my old age without developing a thick skin so I knew he was only joking. Just thought I would make him suffer a bit. LOL

Hi to you too PB, you are wise to tell your parents in Chichester to stay in. A wind chill of -8C is forecast for us with that really strong wind which if it does snow will likely cause a lot of problems. I will be staying in except for dog walking and even the dog doesn't like ice blowing into his eyes so he wont want to hang around whatever we get.

  17. Coz Sussex Sux?....

Just kidding!....I did post earlier this afternoon on how Sussex/Kent looked to be a prime spot tonight, but whilst you're welcome in this regional thread and I can never be seen to be in favour of geographical favouritism, I just can't help myself from saying on behalf of all us South Westerners, "GET ORF MOI LAAAAAAND!!!!!" .......just kidding! air_kiss.gif

OI U!!! Now you have totally confused me! cc_confused.gif West Sussex is dead central of the South so I thought South Central is where I should be as you don't get any further South than me or come to that any more central, maybe I.O.W. may be more central. Looks like us W,Sussex folks aren't wanted anywhere. mega_shok.gifsorry.gif Never mind, I will be the winner when I hog all the snow tomorrow. Netweather forecast for me is as follows.
