Almighty thunderstorm just gone through Stockport, Manchester. Torrential rain and frequent lightning. Caught some lightning on my HD video phone as the cell passed.
the radar does look quite colourful in that part of the world
-
does the rain in the channel pose any threat to the SE corner ?
-
not much happing here right now
a shower heading in my direction but looking at the radar doesn't look too nasty at the moment but that could change
But as the days are getting shorter by the time things start to get going the sun will go down abd they'll start to die out
I think there is a time element here
This is not june or july where days are a lot longer
the shorter days must play some part even if it's only a small part in the devolopment and life of showers IMO
-
BBC expects the Heaviest and the more slow moving showers across more northern parts eg : NW England N Wales and N Midlands while there will be heavy showers elsewhere as well
Some people will be lucky or unlucky depending on your point of view and stay dry
as some others have said it's still fairly cloudy with only limited breaks but I don't know how that'll impact on any shower development
-
Heavy, sometime very heavy rain here in Egham. With no wind and quite a misty morning it's almost like being in the rainforest.
that's the problem with these showers moving so slowly It could set the pattern for the day
if you miss them your day may be mainly dry if your under them as you are at the moment you may have them for an hour or two or three
-
Just saw the latest BBC forecast on News 24 and their forecast map shows not much in the way of rainfall this afternoon
and Tomas Schafernaker is hedging his bets quite substantially now saying that they have no idea where these showers will pop up and some may havw a pleasant day but be prepared just in case
like the poster above says just wait and see
you may get a shower you may not
-
All these warnings expire at 18.00 so by 15.00 or 16.00 if you haven't had any bad weather you can essentially knock it on the head
wonder if the met office is in league with a Umbrella Manufacturer
-
the other thing to mention is that as these showers are forecast to be slow moving anyone not in the firing line is going to have a largely dry day
the latest forecast on the BBC weather website which was updated at 08.35 has me with a day of sunny intervals with a light shower at 19.00 which is a complete contrast to their TV forecast and their rain forecast maps don't show a lot of rain either locally or nationally
A lot of people might be disappointed with the weather they get today
-
Holy crap the met office weather warning page covers almost all of england!!! i bet i will be stuck in class while something thunders over :@
those warnings are very misleading as it's not going to be raining/thundering everywhere
the met office seems to have gone mad covering everyone in a blanket forecast which for most will no be what will occur
-
not looking forward to today
but 1 crumb of comfort is the longer it stays dry the less time you will have them and I hope it stays dry the entire day
-
It seems OTT to virtually blanket warn the UK, and misleading as many places/areas will miss the downpours as usual.
Hopefully they won't do this for every forthcoming showery day.
I thought that as well as I watched the BBC local forecast
It doesn't show the West Midlands Covered in showers
I think the Met Office is covering itself by having a blanket forecast for all of England and Wales when a large Majority will not see anything
I wonder if that rain moving up from C/S England will clip me
Edit : looks like that rain will just miss me
Edit 2 : To top it off the BBC website has my forecast for today as sunny intervals with a light shower at 19.00 a complete contrast to their TV forecast this of course was updated at 08.35 so unless something has changed I will not put too much faith into it been correct
-
Last Time this was forecast I didn't see a single shower/storm
What's the highest risk time for my area anyone know
I live 5 miles north of Coventry
-
Loud thunder heard moments ago in Nuneaton although I think the main activity may be just to our north.
Same Here
-
Gordon, I have a very bad phobia of thunder as you know (I mailed you some time ago) I have like a set routine if I know a storm is coming, (like the one heading to the midlands as I type) I have to lie on a bed with my music on headphones even before the storm arrives. I have a 9 month old son and the last thing I want is to pass it on to him.
Im 36 and still feel an idiot esp when I see kids acting like nothing happening during a storm, so you are by no means alone.
Im off to my bed and wait to see what happens.
Steve
I'll sit downstairs with my parents if and when this starts and I go into a particular mindset which I can maintain for hours if need be
I'm not sure what is worse the storm itself or the severs stress I put myself under before it starts as once it starts and I know that is here I go into my routine of having my eves shut tight to try and avoid seeing lightning which is my biggest worry I actually to seem to calm down
The rainfall radar is showing the rain as less intense than it was so hopefully that also means less severe thunder and lightning but I assume they don't go hand in hand
-
LOL estofex have a level1 for the whole of the UK, Mainly for WindGusts and Tornadoes...
Erm..
what?
probably expecting everybody to eat beans for dinner today
-
If it comes close, whack your iPod/some headphones in and drown it out. If you don't own any, may I suggest investing in some and maybe downloading some Enya (what I'm listening to at work to keep the stress levels down ) - works wonders!
It's what I did when I was younger and having panic attacks - now I'm, put simply, an absolute nutter
Thanks
Haven't got an I-Pod but my parents have returned from the town so with their help I will manage
I feel such a idiot , 35 years old and still need my parents to hold my hand during bad weather (Thunderstorms)
of course the rain seems to be easing just a little bit
-
I really am praying this does not hit me dead on as I have trouble dealing with the weakest of storms never mind the intensity of all lot over South Wales
Hope it misses me
-
Yeah that may well happen, although looking at the radar Im not placing any bets just yet, theres a chance it could just hit us if it changes shape a bit.
It may well hit us but i think if it does it'll be mainly on the fringes of this rain
It'll also be interesting to see if it can maintain it's current intensity once it moves away from the higher ground in Wales
-
I don't know about Pat and Jane - but I'm here. From Gloucestershire :-)
Watching this morning's activity with interest although I was thinking the stuff over Wales might skirt north of here?
I think it may miss you
It seems like it may move over Wolverhampton Telford and the Stafford area moving NE so it'll probably just skirt north of me as well which is a good thing because my garden is already looking like a swamp
-
Oh joy, the fairly unreliable met tabular forecasts have got the thunder graphic for Saturday night for me.
I see that as well but put little stock in it as they had the light rain graphic last night and the rain was anything but light
anyway that's 36 hours away and the weather forecasts seem to be changing constantly
-
A really poor performance by the storm gods for the west midlands today......a bit like Man City FC actually, great potential, but the mixture doesn't gel, and result is pants.......In fact I've been surprised by the general lack of shower/storm activity country
I know what you mean
Considering the forecast for showers / storms that were forecast for the country as a whole and the midlands / northern England in particular , we have all got off quite lightly
-
You make a forecast then (:
If i read that Surrey is getting storms, i wouldnt expect one large storm the size of surrey,my patch might be dry and sunny. its not easy forecasting!
I would never attempt to make a forecast as I lack the knowledge and experience required to do so
I never said forecasting was easy , I was pointing out that for me when quite widespread showers / storms are forecast I tend to miss out and when they are expected to be isolated and many places staying dry they seem to hit me dead on
I also know like you said that even though my county (Warwickshire) may see showers / storms me locally might stay dry
I was just pointing out the Irony that as I got Thunder yesterday when it wasn't expected I probably won't today when It's more likely
-
Have issued a storm forecast for Wednesday: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=convective;sess=
Didn't expect there to be as much thunder as there turned out to be today across Midlands and Nern Home Counties, but summer weather does catch us out sometimes.
Since your expecting more thunder tomorrow than you did today I can look forward to a dry day here tomorrow as the weather more often than not does the opposite of the forecast
-
Winter is the only time the radar becomes alive, :'(
I'll have a look at the charts
GMTV's weather forcast said there is a chance of the odd rumble across the midlands!!!
Friday has a chance of a storm.
well lets praise the GMTV's weather boys and girls
