  1. We have a sprinkling of snow. Only 0.5cm or so but it's managed to lie and a few flakes are still drifting down. Very surprised indeed.
  2. Nothing at all here this evening bar that bloody annoying wind. Radar keeps showing echoes but nothing is falling. And it's still +3C!
  3. Yes why do we get these ridiculous lapse rates with PM air that make 300m altitude so significant? -7 at 850mb and +3 at 100m is about 9C/km. I thought it was normally around 6C/km, with only fohn setups giving 9 or 10C. -7 is usually OK in Arctic Maritime, despite the sea track.
  4. Apparently the uppers at the moment are -7, if that's the case why is the temperature still above freezing? We had a snow shower earlier so the uppers are obviously OK as are dps, just the damn temperature refuses to drop yet again. Dry and clear now and still 3C. Any snow won't stick in that unless it's really heavy and does the evap cooling thing. This "polar maritime" air is nearly always junk below 300m. It either gives temps that won't drop below 1 or 2C despite cold uppers and low dps, or it gives rain at temperatures of 1 or 2C. Once in a blue moon it produces a temporary cover (14th Jan), but only like 1 in 10 occurrences does that. High ground. Always bloody high ground with this PM stuff. If it likes mountains so much why doesn't it eff off to Nepal or somewhere, they're much higher than the Pennines!
  5. It's snow! Just reached here. Had horizontal rain, sleet, hail and graupel here today so far. This latest shower is snow.
  6. 1994 was definitely the best example here. Not only the first proper snow that winter (bar a dusting one day in Nov) but the first for 3 years. Feb 2012 was a complete non event, everywhere else seems to have got snow on the 4th but we somehow got hours of rain at 0C. Disgusting. We did get 1cm on the 19th but that was it. 2009 was less snowy than 1994 and had had sone decent frosts beforehand. I agree with 2007 though, it hardly had any wintry weather till those three days in Feb.
  7. About the headlights- it's really getting lighter for me when 3pm football kickoffs dont use the floodlights at all. Theoretically should be possible from late Jan in the south and mid Feb in Scotland, but they often seem to use them into March even in London.
  8. Whats with all there reports of -5s, we only just touched 0 because the stupid cloud refused to do one yet again. No -5 here since March 2013, and no -7 since Dec 2010. Cannot remember such a long spell without a really cold night.
  9. Just nasty cold rain here, way too warm for.snow. Disgusting weather
  10. 5.8 for me please No, someones had that, 5.9 then...
  11. Boxing Day and today, two lows taking completely different tracks, and the same places get all the fun? With it all moving SW-NE Id have expected Notts, S Yorks to be under the mild muck hours ago but no, thats reserved for the West Mids and Wales. And the NW, even though thats north of the low. And it all started off so promisingly. Of all the snow setups this winter, the one that delivered best was the one the forecasts had missing us....
  12. Nothing happened here on the 25th but Friday 27th was a really weird day. It started snowing about 11am and gave about 3-4cm in a couple of hours, was looking like a good event, and then it suddenly turned to rain without warning just like that. None of the sleety transition, no wavering between rain and snow (sometimes it goes back to snow after that), it took 2 minutes to turn from all settling snow to all pure rain. All the snow had gone by 6pm and it carried on raining and caused some flooding. That day it was 0C at noon and 10C at midnight, absolutely crazy.
  13. Thank goodness for last Wednesday morning, at least weve had a day of lying snow this month. The best thing about this winter is that it hasnt been quite as bad as last, though I think it has down in the south.
  14. Nottingham is hardly any further north than here, maybe 15 miles or so. No higher either.
  15. Cant believe its exactly the places favoured on Boxing Day getting it again! Whats making it so much colder in Notts/Derbys, thought the warm air would have got there by now
  16. Its balmy out there now.. Feels like about 5 or 6C and all the snow is gone.
  17. For 1990-2014 the average days of snow lying here in December is 1.76 days. But take out 2010 and it falls to 0.96. That year had almost half of the total in that 25-year period. 13 of those 25 years had 0 days.
  18. Maybe I should have said colder air. Where have all the -10 uppers been these last two years, havent seen them near us once. Even -5 has only visited rarely.
  19. Rain being reported all over Wales, where has the cold air gone? The snow settled so well when it fell too....
  20. Nothing fallen for 2 hours now, infuriatingly the temp seems have gone up. Thought it wasnt supposed to do that till later? Snow still on grass and pavement, melted off bins and cars though.
  21. Stopped about 1hr ago, still a light covering but temperature not dropping any more. Need another lot to fill the gaps where cars etc have taken it away.
  22. Went very light about 5 mins ago but seems to have pepped up a bit. Still quite light but maybe 0.5 cm on the ground.
  23. Nice dusting outside now, keep it up!
  24. Wow the pavement is white already, this is the first time snow has stuck instantly since Jan 2013.
  25. Its snowing. Can hardly believe it, smallish flakes but looks like its starting to stick.
