  1. Impressive radar returns in the south. Unfortunately I no longer have NW radar (it's the best). I'm looking at Meto radar but apparently the queen owns it. I'd like to post an image up, but not so keen on having my eyes pecked out in the tower of London.
  2. 4 flood watches in the Thames catchment Environment Agency flood warninings Kind of looks like heavy rain heading that way again on radar. Fairly heavy rain here most of the afternoon, but the ground is absorbing it well. No downpours yet.
  3. I heard on the radio yesterday (Steve Wright Factoid) that the ozone layer is only 3mm thick! That can't be right I thought. So, I've just looked it up and infact: "The average thickness of the ozone layer is about 50 km but if compressed by sea-level pressures, it would be only a few centimeters thick. The Dobson Unit (DU) is a scale for measuring the total amount of ozone occupying a column of air. One DU is defined as 0.01 mm thickness at zero degrees Celsius and one atmosphere. If the ozone layer over the US were subjected to 0 °C and 1 atmosphere it would end up being 3 mm thick or 300 DU". http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2000/ChoTan.shtml Now I question the worth of my Steve Wright's Amazing but true book.
  4. Sorry about the long time to a reply Coldfingers. The lambs went back to the farmer who owns them a couple of days after the photo's were taken, so I've no idea how there doing. They're ultimately destined to end up on a plate though!
  5. Amazing stuff! I followed the thread last night - very exciting. Is that your wardrobe sitting in snow outside?
  6. Just downloaded the the new GE. Apparently you can go about on parts of the ocean floor. Haven't found out how to do that just yet. Looks like a hell of a lot of info there. The buoys giving observations look handy alone... Anybody else tried it? http://earth.google.com/ocean/partners.html
  7. I've been using this lately http://www.irfanview.com/ About an inch on the ground now.
  8. Today started out sunny, clouded over early afternoon with some very light graupel showers. A brief moderate shower of snow around 4.30 left a slight covering <1cm. Wind from about NNE. Min last night was about -4C. Temp half an hour ago about -2C.
  9. Hi, same here really. Individual sparse molecules of snow :o However, the Meto now include west coasts counties in Wales on the orange warning for Heavy Snow.
  10. I'm secretly hoping to be measuring my snow in feet and inches, rather than cm's and mm's  Else I'll be a bit
  11. That's when the models run I think. If it wasn't about to snow like hell, there would be more experts around willing to answer questions!
  12. Yep, the GFS model is run 4 times a day. Upto about 84hrs is the highest resolution, then to about 180hrs at a lower res, then after that it is at it's lowest res.
  13. I would imagine that if the power has gone, then the phone (internet) has almost certainly gone worser. It could be a few days before NS can get online again.
  14. How about the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, Wales. I haven't been for a few years, but there's lots of educational interactive displays. A good day out I reckon. Bit of a trek though... CAT
  15. :o Sounds like I'm going to have to be on sheperd duty tonight - where's my crook? Hang on a mo - with any luck Oon will be snowed in tonight and going nowhere. It's the weekend I've got to worry about!
  16. -8C last night and currently -5C with another cold night ahead. I hope they're as hardy as the BBC 'Cold spell' HYS'ers. Meh!
  17. Another sunny day. Currently about +4C. Min was a tad under -3C.
  18. Common sense (or some sort of sense), tells me that having a naked flame next to a bunch of tinder isn't very safe. I would use a glowing filament enclosed in glass.
  19. I think it's the high surface area of all the needles and their resin content that makes it go up like that. Anyway, modern CE marked electric lights have got to be safer than candles.
  20. 1420mm last year Tony. Less than 4 inches needed to beat that. Will we get 4 inches before the year is out?? The near future looks pretty dry...? Sorry, I'm not recording rainfall, but I can tell you the quarry here (a small dent in the landscape, at the top of a hill, excavated to make someones home) has not dried out all summer, which it normally does. It usually dries out just before the tadpoles have found their legs - this year it's been at pretty much winter levels, non stop! I think it may be unprecedented within my knowing, I'm fairly sure it all but dried out last year!
