  1. Cold today - barely into double figures. But it’s temporary. A quick warm up tomorrow and getting warmer all week - culminating in 32oC/90oF forecast by the weekend. The good thing about heat this time of year (and most of the year to be fair) is the cool nights. Down to single digits.
  2. A good size funnel cloud reported in the last hour over Rainham, Medway.
  3. True - other than Feb 1991, nothing stands out for a long time after that
  4. Exactly the same - and no doubt it helped being 10/11 at the time too. January 1987 got me obsessed with snow (but led to a lifetime of disappointments) Even in Canada there’s only been a few snowstorms that have come close to it.
  5. Indeed Calgary does have lots of measures in place that do a good job. That said it feels like there’s been more flooding in recent years. Whether that’s due to the weather getting worse or other factors like building/concreting things over I’m not so sure. The flooding in 2013 that devastated Canmore and Calgary and many parts of Alberta was a 1:100 year event and no type of flood mitigation would have stopped that.
  6. I think it’s the ponderosa pine trees burning in BC that have given that sweet smell in the air over the last week or so. They smell like vanilla so that would make sense.
  7. There’s been a couple of small forest fires within the Canmore area. This one at lac des arcs...which was held Firefighters have been on it and controlling it. Made for nice sunset pics... Still smokey today (no doubt due to the ongoing BC fires)
  8. I’d be interested to see if that is the lowest max temp of the year recorded for the uk for the last say 5/10 years (assuming that remains the hottest temp of the year)
  9. Chatting with a friend in Medway today and they registered 32oC. And from my time in Medway it was always a degree or two cooler than the corridor from Gravesend to Dartford. I used to drive the A2 everyday and the heat would always peak there by a few degrees - so I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s such a shame they don’t have the station there anymore as they’re missing out on a a large area that is arguable one of the hottest in the country.
  10. Couldn’t agree more - I’ve had more visitors in September than any other month. It’s a cracking month - and made even better because all the tourists leave and it’s very peaceful
  11. Yup officially the worse year on record for BC fires. Over 500 fires and a total burnt area of over 600sq miles. That’s pretty much the size of Greater London. I feel for those with breathing difficulties. I don’t have a problem but it affects me. I’d imagine there’s excess related deaths during a bad forest fire year but can’t find any official stats.
  12. Indeed quite smokey today - I’d say for Canmore it’s fairly usual. Probably every other year, maybe every 3. Some years it’s been particularly bad. One year I was walking the relay for life and ash was actually falling out of the sky. If you ever go to storm mountain lodge on the AB,BC border and onwards to Radium theres remnants of a large forest fire that you can see from the highway and goes on for miles (it burnt over 65 square miles of forest back in ‘03) It stopped just 5km short of all the cabins there. They were very lucky. A change in wind direction saved them.
  13. The World Meteorological Organisation still states 56.7oC at Furnace Creek in 1913 as the hottest ever temp. So I think a little way off. I guess he could argue the phrase ‘reliably measured’
  14. Lots of storm warnings and storms yesterday. Looks like Calgary region got hit hard in places. Hail and flash flooding. Here’s some pics from soc media. @CatchMyDriftdid you get affected?
  15. It’s been a very muted Canada day. Certainly one for reflection. Limited, if any, parades and lots of peaceful protests regarding the indigenous atrocities. Also very sad - pretty much complete devastation in Lytton, as pictures start to emerge. As Roger has stated, more opportunities of wild fires over the next few days, as well as quite a few already burning across the province.
  16. A muted Happy Canada Day ?? today for some - very sad to see events unfolding in Lytton, BC. After recording almost 50oC, the hottest temp ever in Canada, it’s literally gone up in flames. Full evacuation order issued as mayor states ‘the whole town is on fire’. It’s unsure how much of the town is left. Apparently most of Main Street, locals businesses, fire stations and hospital have all been ravished by fire. Along with numerous homes.
  17. This heatwave is truly amazing. Lytton BC has broken the all time Canadian record three days in a row. The latest temp a mind blowing 49.6oC! At 50oN! That’s 4.1oC more than the previous Canadian record that stood for over 80 years. To put that into perspective that’s nearly 2.5oC hotter than the all time temperature record for Las Vegas (47.2oC). It’s also hotter than any country in Europe have ever recorded. Or South America for that matter. Over 100 locations have broken their all time temperature records across western Canada. Other locations have recorded temperatures higher than the previous Canada record of 45.5oC in the last few days. Cache Creek (46.4oC), Lillooet (45.6oC) and Kamloops (45.8oC) all surpassed the old record. Quite remarkable.
  18. Wasn’t the record 39oC? if so, you’ve smashed that. Another record breaking day in Canmore.
  19. I’ll put my house on it being another 38oC day by 4pm....and probably again tomorrow...unbelievable sustained heat.
  20. There was quite a comprehensive paper written about this last year. General consensus is when, not if, it’ll happen... The increasing likelihood of temperatures above 30 to 40 °C in the United Kingdom | Nature Communications WWW.NATURE.COM The United Kingdom has experienced a strong heat wave in 2019 that set a new temperature record for the country of 38.7 °C. In this study the authors show that under climate change, local...
  21. Record breaking heat in Canmore today. Over the magical 100oF.....still hot at midnight. Pics or it didn’t happen I hear you say....
  22. Lol OK. Meanwhile we’ve just hit a joint record breaking 37oC in Canmore at 4300ft asl and 51oN
  23. It’s certainly accelerating at quite a rate. And on a side note this will have a rapid knock on effect for the decline in glaciers in western Canada. In just 15 years I’ve personally seen quite the retreat at the Columbia ice fields, which straddles Alberta and British Columbia. They estimate 70% retreat by the end of the century. At this rate that could be a lot sooner
