  1. It’s been mentioned a few times on other posts - but could you add some context as to why, for those less knowledgeable. That would be really helpful. Cheers
  2. Jan 1987 - 2.5 feet of snow and a week of snow and sub zero temps and snowed in at home with my brother and parents. As a 10 year old that never saw his workaholic dad, playing in the garden throwing snowballs and building an igloo with him, it was just perfect. Loved every minute of it
  3. Careful, the pedantic police are out in force tonight - you could have started world war 3 with that question
  4. Welcome back! It is starting to feel like winter now. Daytime highs due to be around minus 5 to minus 10 and nighttime lows might get down to minus 20 in Canmore. Plenty of sun around mixed with snow showers in the next few days.
  5. One of the main players has just released their winter forecast for Canada. Looks like warmer than average for the eastern half , colder for the west.... The Weather Network - Canada's 2022 Winter Forecast: Stormy and changeable season ahead WWW.THEWEATHERNETWORK.COM The Weather Network is forecasting a come-and-go winter for much of the country, with periods of high-impact weather for the season ahead.
  6. I was just reading this and then saw your message - extreme cold is never fun. It’s a bit similar to last years forecast with increased snowfall but from an active jet stream running through. But this time they seem to be expecting more upsloping snow, as they mentioned, coming from easterly winds. You may end up with all cold and no snow again
  7. A cold crappy day in town at 5oC and raining. Rain due to transition over to snow late afternoon/early evening but accumulation looks unlikely. Lots of snow at the ski hill though...
  8. Funnily enough next Thursday is forecast to drop off quite a bit with snow. Not before reaching mid teens this weekend. Good timing! I bet you can’t wait!
  9. Just popping in to say hope everyone is ok tonight, especially those in the eye of the storm. Having experienced some extreme winter storms over the years in Canada it’s amazing how ferocious Mother Nature can be, but can be scary as f%#^ when you’re in the thick of it, especially if you end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stay safe and hope there isn’t too much damage. All the best
  10. Yeah I bet it was. Not sure about you but I tend to find the ploughing is worse with bad storms early in the season. Whether it’s a budget thing who knows.
  11. As Roger has alluded to snow has hit parts of Alberta hard over the last few days. Road closures on main highway from Radium to Banff as well as local ones. Here’s some totals: It mainly hit hard west and north of Canmore, with Lake Louise looking like the sweet spot... Banff did OK from it too...
  12. Not much to report on weather wise but lots of disruption due to filming in town. Sets going up downtown and in various locations like the engine bridge (river trail). HBO are in town filming for their new series ‘The Last of Us’ which is due out next year.
  13. Yeah a little bit. The snows staying in the shade as it’s close to freezing but in the sun it’s mostly long gone. Some good northern lights this week though.
  14. Forecast was pretty poor. The snow settled overnight but nothing like they were predicting. Kananaskis ended up with about 10cm. Calgary did get its first widespread lying snowfall of the season though. After all the rain/wet snow it made for some interesting driving.
  15. ^damp squib that should have been - blinking autocorrect Still no accumulating snow but it’s snowing quite heavily....the next hour or two will be the crucial time if it’s to start settling. It’s not normally this hard work almost into November lol
  16. As expected, a bit of a damp squid so far. Nothing but wet in town though some snow starting to settle on roofs etc. Even in Kananaskis there’s only a little on the ground. Though the ski hill is doing well. It was just too wet IMO for any real accumulation. Though the warning has now changed to say that it’ll turn over to proper snow by late morning down to low levels and it is forecast for all day today and night, so we’ll see what happens...
  17. Weather warning for Canmore region. Up to 25cm’s possible through tonight and tomorrow into Friday. Currently sleety. My gut is telling me this’ll be a Kananaskis hit (more to the south and east with higher elevation)
  18. Yup - look at Jan 1987. One of the coldest spells of the 20th century (down to minus 23oC) and snowiest (for the SE up to 70cm in places). Christmas ‘86 was super mild and within a few weeks that happened. It often seems it’s a precursor to some of the coldest weather.
  19. I might be wrong but I think if you’re after a mild winter you might be disappointed this year...especially early doors. Call it a hunch
  20. To ‘relive’ , mine would have to be Jan 1987. Living on the north downs of Kent we had 70cm’s and it dumped snow for days. Never seen anything like it in the UK since, and living in a Canada I’ve only seen similar once. But there’s something much more magical about it occurring in England as a child. I’d loved to have experienced the winter of 62/63.
  21. In Canada - about 6 hours after 70cm fell in 2008 but then the snow plows came through. In England - I think it was a fair few days on the north downs during jan 1987 after about 70/75cm fell. (Was just a kid but remember locals trying to dig out of our road)
  22. I was just about to post the same thing about sunshine village. As it rains in town the snow line is at around 6000ft asl. Dumping nicely on the ski hills though...
  23. I think it was winter 17/18 where there were about 170 days in a row below freezing for you guys. That’s not fun even for the hardiest winter lover. EDIT: it was 167 days from October to April Edmonton just broke a 44-year-old record for longest cold streak ever | News DAILYHIVE.COM A Canadian city – a provincial capitol, no less – has officially broken its own record for most consecutive days where the temperature has dipped to or below freezing, with 167 days...
  24. I think the jet stream took all the storms south of edmonton through southern Alberta.
  25. True but it can’t be worse than some years. I think ‘08 it’s snowed every month of the year with 10cm’s in August. That was a depressing year. I’m happy with a snowy winter if the following summer is good.
