Lots of snow in Avoriaz. Only a week ago everything was green - look at it now http://avoriaz.livecam360.net

A bit of a double edged sword really. Ocean freight is responsible for vast amounts of CO2 emissions, this route apparently shaves off 40% of the normal route and reduces energy use accordingly - that's an enormous saving and reduction in emissions! This of course has to be balanced by the additional pollution being deposited in the high Arctic.
My worry is that if this becomes a regular route wouldn't the constant cutting and churning of the ice make it harder for any refreeze? The odd one or two would make no difference but get into double figures and it may be a different story.

If this is a success http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-20454757 then the ice is doomed.

Snow on the Cumbrian fells this afternoon.

Looks like bat droppings. If they are don't use any poison or try to block any small holes as they have the highest protection under law. You can phone your local Natural England bat help line who will advise and help you remove them if you want but they dont do any harm.
edit...
Bat Conservation Trust on 0845 1300 228 - they'll help and may be able to identify the species from your photo (if they are bats that is!)

Gov’t sources say No. 4 pool a grave concern ...Tokyo metropolitan area would be forced to evacuate.
That's rather alarming. Are there any other sources of the news? If this a one off report then it may be just being overplayed but if the concerns are being expressed elsewhere and publicly then its a lot more worrying.

Is no one able to help? 34 have looked but none so far with any ideas on how to solve the problem?
Sorry John, I don't recognise the problem so not sure what to suggest. When ever I've had a problem of data before its usually been solved by a new battery but it doesn't sound like that will solve your problem.

Rain, drizzle, and more rain - not a single flake. Temperature 3.8.

0mm - Lake District in England! which is not the far north of Scotland as the overly manic official forecasts would have you believe.
Predicted snow - 0mm

Santorini was on TV last night - BBC4 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00sl29f/Timewatch_Atlantis_The_Evidence/). It may have been the site of Atlantis. Whether true on not it was the site of the largest eruption in Human history. Ejecting 600 cubic kilometres of ash (Mount St Helens ejected 0.5!)
If it does go we will certainly know about it.

El Heirro may have broken the surface!
The explosions are following one another every 10 to 15 minutes … Large clouds of gas, steam and pyroclastic products. Magma is being ekected and with with the night falling, we start to see the redness … The ciprissoid jet can be seen with almost each explosion …

2.5 here at the moment and still clear skies so I expect to get down a little lower than the -2.3 last night.
-
Now will it make it to the surface ????
It does look like we could see a new (albeit small) island in the morning.

OON is beating me just but I do have the first frost of the season ... just -0.1
-
down to 0.4 now so looks like a frost is on the cards
-
-
Wahay! I think I'm winning with 1.5 at the moment. If the air stays calm looks like a good chance of a decent frost in the early hours.
edit 1.3 now

This seems like it could be a major event but there is so little news about it. The BBC report that the flood defences have been breached but its unclear where and to what extent. If the breach is near any tidal areas the spring tides that are forecast will inundate large areas.
Where's the news? Even youtube has only a couple of videos

It's gone very quiet on the Elenin front. How's the end of the world coming along? Anyone spotted the dwarf planet yet?
Hadn't you realised we are now all dead and living entirely in a state of hyper-realism in pure digital form. The 'end' happened last week about half past 2 on.... oh it seams to have been erased!
Anyway, no need to worry.
