  1. A bit of a double edged sword really. Ocean freight is responsible for vast amounts of CO2 emissions, this route apparently shaves off 40% of the normal route and reduces energy use accordingly - that's an enormous saving and reduction in emissions! This of course has to be balanced by the additional pollution being deposited in the high Arctic.

My worry is that if this becomes a regular route wouldn't the constant cutting and churning of the ice make it harder for any refreeze? The odd one or two would make no difference but get into double figures and it may be a different story.

  2. Looks like bat droppings. If they are don't use any poison or try to block any small holes as they have the highest protection under law. You can phone your local Natural England bat help line who will advise and help you remove them if you want but they dont do any harm.

    edit...

Bat Conservation Trust on 0845 1300 228 - they'll help and may be able to identify the species from your photo (if they are bats that is!)

  3. This seems like it could be a major event but there is so little news about it. The BBC report that the flood defences have been breached but its unclear where and to what extent. If the breach is near any tidal areas the spring tides that are forecast will inundate large areas.

Where's the news? Even youtube has only a couple of videos
