  1. READ ALL ABOUT IT. READ ALL ABOUT IT. Melt pool found in the high artic. come on GW give us all a break.

6.5 deg C and pools of water on top of ice pack indicate that a period of above freezing temperatures of more than several days has been experienced. The average summer temperature is -1.5. Don't you think GW is right to be concerned?

  2. This is assuming that there is such a particle as 'anti-matter' or even that the universe began as the 'big bang'. This is all pure conjecture and scientists continuing to mess with things they shouldnt be messing with.

By what chemistry did all these particles decide to intwine together with? Explosions are by their nature, chaotic and could well conceive of there being no harmonious result after their conception.

Oh no not that debate again ;)

  3. Mr Roo says that there really isn't a danger as there are lots of very high energy particles constantly bombarding the planet with energies much higher than CERN could ever hope to reproduce, and we haven't had any problems with that, so there is no reason why the LHC should cause any problems either....another bit of media hysteria, unfortunately.

No worm holes - I'm disappointed now. :o

If this does (which I don't believe it will) cause the end of the world I would find it very satisfying that humanity destroyed itself for the quest for knowledge as opposed the more likely reason - greed.

  4. ERUPTION UPDATE - CHAITEN - CHILE

Army staff supervising the evacuation of the area around the Chaiten volcano say they have now completed the evacuation of the immediate area. They have, however, reported further activity from the volcano including loud rumbling noises from underground. Experts are now saying that this eruption could last for weeks even months.

A layer of ash some 6 inches thick has now built up in the area and local water supplies have been contaminated. Vulcanologists are now warning a major explosive eruption which could collapse the volcanos cone could happen at any time. They are also now warning that up to 20 of Chiles 100 active volcanos are also in danger of erupting at any time.

If the worst comes to the worst this has the potential to be catastrophic and could have a major impact on global climate, particularly for the southern hemisphere. I will be keeping a close eye on events and keep you all informed.

Any predictions of what VE type the eruptions have and may be.

This is proving very interesting (not that I take delight in suffering). I have spent some time in Chile and was amazed by the amount of smoking volcanoes at regular intervals along the whole length of the Andes. I've not visited this particular volcano but i have spent sometime exploring Llaima which had erupted the year before and left an incredible lunar landscape of small razor sharp pebbles over a very large area - made camping very precarious!

If this does turn out to be a major eruption the climate impact could be great with one half of the globe cooling and the other warming - the chance for unpredictable weather is great i would guess.

  5. In response to some of the posts here that 'everything is ok' or the earth isn't warming etc. I would like to draw a comparison with the current economic situation we are in.

This time last year everyone expected and planned as though it was business as usual, house prices would continue to rise and we would all become millionaires. Everyone (or at least the majority) comforted themselves that economy has never collapse before and if it did it would sort itself out. Well, as we are discovering when something is not right with a system it corrects itself rapidly and sometimes dramatically. Climate and its response to human induced changes can and probably will at some point make equally dramatic (and possibly catastrophic) abrupt corrections. Can we, should we take such risks?

  6. OON on your next pasty trip drop in at Cockermouth Market Place - as a landscape architect you may appreciate what we are doing to the place! (I'm involved, unfortunatly cant claim to be the designer but i can say i've stood the ground for quality and a contemporary feel as my role as design guru on the steering committee). Its not finsihed yet but you may like looking at holes as much as i do. :o

  7. What does everyone make of this? Before some of you get on your high horses and berate me for having the audacity to even post the link (you know who you are!),let me say I'm still getting my head round it too. It's very lengthy and split into five parts, but the final bit is probably not what you expect. Clue: it would make sense to Magpie and GW. I leave it for everyone's dissection and stand back to see what develops. Note to mods: Really no idea which thread this sits best in;feel free to relocate if necessary.

Very interesting, wish he'd had it proof read first to find the odd missing word. But I think he is right - over consumption by a greedy self-obsessed righteous species will do irrevocable harm to all it touches. As he points out we are in terms of development still in our childhood (maybe young adults, but still teenagers) period and as such arrogant and bereft of any wisdom.

  8. I have to take issue with this statement. I believe that I am what would be classed as a "denier" in that I consider that our climate is "dictated" by complex and interacting natural cycles, rather than by man's behaviour.

However, that in no way means that I feel that man can continue in the way that he has been doing. I have, times ad nauseum, made my views quite clear that we have a duty to respect our planet and resources and to damn well clean up our act.

I really, really do object to these self-righteous "accusations" which are bandied around with such gusto and which are, in many cases, totally without foundation.

Point taken Noggin, perhaps I should have put the term deniers in quotation marks. It was not a criticism directed at you personally more one intended to group the holders of the popular view that 'if we are not warming then we can continue down the same path without a care in the world' camp of people.

I think you will agree we live in a self-obsessed selfish world where there can only be short term benefits!

Whether warming or not, natural cycle or human induced we must keep an open mind and do our utmost to do the right thing.

  9. To use a famous architects quote we should strive to always "touch this earth lightly". What is wrong with aiming to reduce our carbon footprint if it means a more reliable, politically stable and potentially endless source of energy be produced. We should, and must, be concerned that we as a species are having some effect on the planet as a whole and to be more respectful of our own home is essential. The AGW deniers only lead to a continuation of the buy now, pay later, attitude - it will come crashing down, the world is a finite resource.

  10. again we seem to be neglecting the effect any 'significant sea level rise' would have on the rest of the shelf ice surrounding Antarctica and protecting the vast interior ice sheets from collapse .

Most shelves are frozen to the mainland but these junctures are within the range of sea level of the past few thousand (years as the glaciers have spread out from the land onto the open waters).

Any sudden rise of the sea level will tend to float the seaward edges higher bring great forces to bear on the junction with the land. The shelf breaks off and interior ice piles into the southern ocean behind it.

We could then be looking at 10's of metres of sea level rise over a few seasons.

This is catastrophic climate change at it's worst and the sign's seem to indicate we are on an unstoppable collision course with such an event.

The oceans have been soaking up heat for decades now and it is the 'warm ocean' driving both the climatic changes in circumpolar winds and shelf collapse/glacier acceleration. This will not stop overnight and ,seeing as we have done nowt to curtail the rises, will continue to increase in effect.

To add to that catastrophic view we need also to factor in the effects of the changes in weight on the continental shelf. If this is an active volcanic area or one prone to seismic movement then these activities will be pushed in to possible further action. This is an area of research little explored but one studied in relation to large dam projects as the building of a dam to hold back vast quantities of water do and have in the past caused local seismic activity so any dam must be designed to withstand it or not build it at all.

If a volcanic activity is induced then any reduction in albedo could cause very rapid thaw.

  11. im not expert on global warming or co2 emissions..but how long does co2 that we pump into the atmosphere remain there for..is it months years or decades??

Its about 20 years, although some souces say between 6 months and 20 years. But it wil depend on how well the natural sinks are working - if full then 20 years could become much longer.

Sorry made a typo its 200 not 20 - soucre: IPCC Scientific Assessment (1990)
