  1. ....hear, hear, drgl.....there's none so blind as will not see! Ah, well, I've said before that I can't be bothered to argue about it any more, we'll just have to let the future speak for itself.

But, we mustn't come back gloating in 10 years' time....that would be too unkind!

Oh, I don't know though...........

  2. Oooohhh, but it isn't just one cold spell. The last three Winters have been tending towards colder and the last two Summers have not been as intensely hot as 2003.

So what if last year was one of the warmest recorded in the Northern hemisphere? It wasn't the hottest, was it? Summers have not continued to get hotter and hotter over the past couple of years. Ditto for Britain.

I am sure we could argue this until the cows come home. We are all so firm in our opinions. Time will tell. Hindsight is (will be) wonderful!

We must all be careful not to choose the facts to suit the theory and I feel that using "statistics" rather than observations is tending towards doing this.

No offence intended to anyone. :)

PS The MetO's experimental LRF for late Spring/Summer is only for "cold/average more likely".

  3. Mr Murr.....an interesting read! Perhaps people will now begin to accept/see that Winters are changing. My own feelings are that the first hints of change were in the Winter of 03/04. I have put this forward here many times but usually get pooh-poohed, with the exception of a hardy few like-minded souls (shalln't mention names!). I can only go by what I have observed though and cannot produce any other "proof" of a change. It is good to read what you have written. :)

I suppose because I live in Ireland and we get more atlantic influence than you I have noticed the change in the less zonal activity more than a lot of people in the UK.

Perhaps because I am a little older (49) and I have experienced all kinds of weather

    Good Morning, young John!

Agree wholeheartedly with your comments regarding Atlantic influence, being a West coasterner myself.

I too have experienced much weather, having turned 50 last month! :(

Looking at the MetO experimental forecast for the Summer, the Atlantic is going to carry on losing it's influence. It will still be over you, but won't be making it to the mainland. :(

Let's hope it continues it's westward retreat over the next few years!

  4. I don't do forecasts so here's a hopecast........

.....I eagerly await the huge number of posts confirming total agreement, he concluded ironically.

    T.M

    Sounds perfect to me! ;):)

Having just checked the MetO seasonal forecast, it seems that we are not in for even a warm late Spring /Summer. Just cold/cold to average being most likely.

  5. No daffs here either. Usually they have been and gone by St David's day (Wednesday) but I haven't seen even one. Crocuses are coming out though and snowdrops have been around for a few weeks. No hyacinths yet.

Several shrubs have had tiny new shoots several times this year, but they all keep getting frosted off and die back.

It has been nice that the grass has hardly grown this Winter! Not time to get the mower out yet. :)

  6. Agree that Spring is a good time, but must keep an eye on the watering. It's best kept moist for a few weeks after sowing. But if you water, do it really gently or you will blast the seeds out. Regarding raking over after sowing....I found that this just resulted in the seeds ending up in piles, with bare areas in between. So what I do is get me riddle out (or sieve, if you prefer!) and sieve some soil over the top of the seeds to make sure they are well covered.

Don't forget the biggest problem of all......BIRDS. They will have every last seed. What I do (and it's tedious, but it works) is to use sticks and string and set up a sort of latticework over the seeded area to keep the blighters off. Or you could lay some plastic netting over the seeded area, anchored down with sticks around the edge. Keep it raised a couple of inches off the ground, though, or the seedlings will become tangled up in it. In addition, tie some supermarket carrier bags to the top of the sticks....they blow around and frighten the birds away.

  7. I haven't been logging them, but at a guess I'd say well into the teens. I'd observed more frosts in november than the whole of last winter.

In other words, this winter is shaping up differently, solely due to it's anticyclonic nature, which wasn't a trait of any of the previous 00 winters, hence there is no pattern or trend as yet.

Well, that looks like an improvement. The Winter has shaped up differently and if it is due to it's anticyclonic nature, then we must ask "why has it become anticyclonic?" Answer.......it is because changes are afoot. The trend is definitely there. Yes, even in the snowless wastes of Abingdon. This time next year, we will be that much further on into our colder phase. For phases are what it is all about. IMVHO.

  8. I agree,i watched our winters get slowly milder with less and less snow & frosts and now i have been watching the slow reverse for the last two-three years. Wait & see................

Always good to see someone else with the same thoughts! Blow the charts.....it's getting out there and observing it and feeling it that shows what the trend is.

    Colder Winters...hooray :whistling:

Not such horrible hot Summers....hooray

  9. I noticed blossom blooming the other day  :o :whistling:

    Could have been a Winter-flowering prunus (?).

Saw some snowdrops in flower on Sunday. Wasn't sure if they were early, late or just right. Don't know much about snowdrops. Hyacinths poking through here.

  10. Perfect evidence of a cooling trend which has started over the last year or so

    Tamara

I couldn't agree more. The snow event in Jan 2004....that's when I thought "ah...it's started". Winters will get increasingly colder now, IMVHO. So will Summers, so it will all year round! Even my 13 yo daughter said the other day that Summers had cooled down since 2003 (yes I know ththere have only been two, but the longest journey starts with one step). It's coming, it's definitely coming. We are on the cusp of the change and the change will gather speed as we go along, just like driving over the crest of a hill.

As for this Winter....in this neck of the woods it has definitely felt generally colder than the last 10ish years. Certainly more in the way of frost. A huge change is that there has been almost nothing from the Atlantic.

A new winter has been born this year.

Next year will continue this trend and expand

morning John......gladdens your heart, doesn't it!

Yes, a new Winter has been born, of the seed that was sown about two years ago. :whistling:

  11. In the bit underneath posts are boxes called "reply" and "quote". Under my posts are also boxes called "delete" and "edit". Is this what appears under each persons' posts, on their own screen, IYKWIM? I'm getting paranoid because I lost my temper here recently and was wondering if it is some sort of "flag" for moderators to weed out troublemakers! :)

  12. I had asked a question re topplers but then found the answer in Brickfielder's illustration :)

I am so glad to have found this thread.....they don't come much more stupid than me. Silly thing is, I've always been absolutely fascinated by the weather, just never understood how it works :D .

  13. Missed that one, then! But isn't it changeable......pitch black one minute and then dazzling light the next minute. My daughter and I (!) both commented on what a lovely sort of light it was.....it seemed to make all the colours in the garden come to life.
