  1. Dear oh dear, you'd last 5 minutes in the military, surely you are made of sterner stuff?
  2. 87 will do for me, village I grew up in was cut off for 2 weeks. Even the bypass was shut with massive snow drifts.
  3. Well we were rather spoilt by the cold extending well in to April this year, so I guess we have to pay for that I'm sure it will turn cold soon enough, still only September yet.
  4. Well, not sure if this is the place, but parts of the east have been under alot of water today. Great Yarmouth in particular, but also many villages in the area too. Fire service had 400 calls or so in a very short time. Don't remember any warnings. http://www.norfolkfireservice.co.uk/Incidents.html Although the site doesn't seem to be updating too well at the moment.
  5. Well, that sounds very promising, makes much better reading than I was expecting!
  6. Whoa, had one bang about 10 mins ago, must have been real close - shook the whole damn house. Had to rush down to comfort the dog, poor thing must have nearly had a heart attack!!
  7. Whats with the storm risk and lightning detector maps. Had lightning here for at least an hour now. Now the rumbles and rain have started too.
  8. Well, I'm Hoping for some snow, ice (the odd icicle too!) and some generally cold weather this Winter. I'd like to think I can continue to have these hopes, without the self-appointed weather police jumping all over me!
  9. Thought I had seen some street lights go out and come back on......
  10. Whoa! It's proper intense here now, lightning every 1 or 2 seconds, not particularly loud yet, but haven't seen a display like this for a while, standing in the garden like a right freak - lol
  11. Some fantastic lightning here at the moment, some in the distance somewhat akin to an artillery bombardment in the distance and some that is turning night into day right overhead - fantastic! And of course some much welcome rain.
  12. Courses? Interesting that you thought the comment was directed at you!
  13. Maybe thinking 'outside of the box' every once in a while might help you
  14. Hi John, thanks for the encouragement. Only 33 myself, but I do remember the winters of the late 70s/early 80s. I must dig out some photos from when our village was completely cut off, can't remember the year, but bread and milk was going for a pound a throw and gas stoves being sold at ludicrous prices! I admit to being a cold lover, but also think that we may be on the cusp of a colder spell. Cheers, rib.
  15. How very eloquently put, kind of thing I would have said if I had the intelligence! Cheers, rib
  16. Certainly not, viking posted something and elaborated on it, rather than a one line statement dismissing or supporting something. I for one thank him for that kind of post.
  17. What a fabulous post, very interesting reading!
  18. Fair enough, but I'm no scientist and certainly no meterologist. I read what I read as a layman and have no in depth knowledge of the subject. I see no point in regurgitating what I read, the original post was just to see what other people think on the subject, in order to gauge some opinion. Your initial response was simply to dismiss the research, without elaborating (which you have since done). Others came back with something more substantial and backed it up, which I learnt something from. Even if the research needs more work, there is a chance that in time, the atlantic conveyor MAY shutdown, possibly due to global warming. In which case our climate may change for the cooler. I do respect your opinion though and am glad to hear it, always something to learn! Not sure that I know you? Not in the air force were you? Cheers, rib.
  19. Hi John, thanks for that. I had vowed that I wouldn't come on during the warmer months, being a bit of a winter lover (as if you couldn't tell!). Some of the other forum members said at the time I wouldn't be able to stay away - I guess they were right!
  20. Hi Paul, thats not the only research I've been reading, and your interpretation is different to mine. I'm not going to argue the point, as I am no expert but I can read. To be honest I find your style a little agressive. I'm a relative newbie and a little wet behind the ears, I hope your'e not as forceful with all newcomers, you'll be scaring them away! No offence intended by the way, we shall just have to agree to disagree!
  21. Hi John, indeed, I rather enjoyed winter this year and it certainly broke the trend of late. I am looking forward to a run of better winters, and wouldnt shed a tear if our climate turned slightly cooler! Cheers, rib. Yeah that's some of the stuff I've been looking at. I wasn't suggesting that what is claimed is set in concrete, or that it cannot be challenged as is the case with much scientific or academic work, especially in relation to climate change. Just thought it was interesting and something worth thinking about. Cheers, rib.
  22. Fair play WIB, thats at least better than dismissing something out of hand, especially if it doesn't fit in with that persons beliefs. Claim and counter-claim can be made for much that it is going on with the worlds climate.
  23. Thats rather dismissive, gentlemen by the name of Professor Bryden and Dr. Cunningham of the National Oceanography Centre and their team would tend to disagree with you!
