  1. Excellent team working on this at IMO. The information recorded here will be used by us all on Earth, for century's., seriously. Great way to learn for the current younger learners(49 count me in on the younger bit K ...Since Laki in the 18th century no larger lava flow has happened on Earth above sea level. Interesting times.....
  2. The first dike intrusion back in August is still at full temperature almost under kistufell, could well reactivate with a fresh pressure pulse... Talking of pressure look at this http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/Map/zoom.php?key=45&typ=euro#2 I wonder are things going to get unusual soon? This is interesting, but worrying. Some would say that this has nothing to do with Iceland, well maybe it has, we will see. The larger quakes have a long tale... these days. Location with thanks to the IMO http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/articles/nr/2949 not quite in the August dike intrusions (scroll down to see). Could be significant, maybe even eruption starting or changing, maybe...
  3. Look what it was like, just a little later. 17:30 Iceland time. The snow is building up in front of the camera despite visits from the Iceland Met O in a Style that we Southern softeys from the GB isles only dream of in the the worst ever winter........ Gulp. Take it from me the Iceland lot are tough, but the webcam will be OFF occasionally... Eeek I didn't notice these, that will be by the morning a ripple or two then, several high fives me thinks...Maybe, even higher.http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/Map/zoom.php?key=36&typ=euro#2 These recent events are unusual in having two EQ's together per event. Dangerous harmonics indeed...
  4. Hi mate, yes it is and in fact, we already knew, Askja is looking good in this pic... Remember she suddenly stopped having 24/7 ice recently, last few years... Now we know, it is for real. Hope I grow old before it gets too bad... Could take a while, but it is quite honestly looking bad on the gradual build up front. Light a thermal lance if you dare... The Earth is a complex pressurized jobby, it is not wise to let gas vent like this.....
  5. The brighter the fire the more interesting the gas at the H vent. Surely, the gas and the quakes signal a change? Gradually the decompression of gasses allow melt to the mantle, just like gas welding or even soldering. Things like surface tension tale on a whole new meaning with a gas axe...
  6. The interesting thing is, cold war and disease beside this is about as close as it comes to being real nasty for us as a life form, like Laki, or worse, DNA improves from things like this, it gets tougher if it is still there after the said event. You know this is the most dangerous time of my life or anybody's since Laki in the 18th century, In Volcanic terms, this is our lifetime top ATM...Everybody alive today.
  7. Very involved at work...Thanks mate http://www.emsc-csem.org/Earthquake/Map/zoom.php?key=35&typ=euro#2, I remember that mostly that EQ,s on the main line accelerate Iceland activity a day or so later, even more alarming is the fact that there were two. Hope it is all nothing but a blip, who knows. The video needs an hour or so more, may be two, could watch the thing all night...
  8. To read this volcano it would be like knowing orchids or truffles, mind...
  9. Dodgy, take cover just in case. The pattern looks dangerous.
  10. In my opinion this is harmonic tremor at a mag 3/4 sort of level. Looks dangerous as hell.
  11. This rifting episode is a first for the Interweb. Bada is just next to the rift, that is a bonus or not, depends on the outcome I guess. Bad mama. Caldera 3+ since the 10th Sept With list Actually since the 10th Sept the list is thus:-- @ IMO Iceland Deep rumble http://hraun.vedur.is/ja/arg/png/husavik_15d.png a link for once The point is a certain resonance is apparent. This could have serious consequences for local geology. Which came first The glacier or the volcano, like the chicken and the egg.
  12. Whilst the weather ruins the graphs and equipment in Iceland, something to ponder on a quiet Sunday. All the Mag 3 and above in the area concerned since August, Auto corrected (and selectively manually corrected I think, not sure) To date @21 09 2014, 0930 UK. Close up caldera... Close up and list of some activity under glacier...
  13. I have experienced first hand a 5.4 in the UK in 1984. Shake-m baby ...
  14. There appears a change in the reaction Vs:- lava/water the lava is glowing up at the point of maximum interaction, lava composition, chemical changes. perhaps. its only a thought. Worthy of the National gallery, stuff....
  15. Everything I can get in 5 mins break...Hope it helps with visualizing events... Detail.... L8r's. Carls theory is good but a weakness has been identified, the hydraulic pressure is directed under the glacier, allowing the hovercraft effect on a very large down hill facing cracked glacial chunk.... Skiing in the snow, is a Northern Soul record , that may not go down too well for some.... NE quad flank collapse, still my preferred option, nothing changed.
  16. Well into 2015 even. My reckoning of a NE flank collapse and eruption, is I think still on the cards, I thought it would have happened by now, but perhaps as the fissure is still young it could take a little longer. The officials are having worries about the amount of Ice laden water mush that can move down slope fast, the white mass from a glacial volcano flank collapse is one of natures nightmares, half an hours warning is not enough time , I see there worry plainly. All the glacial outlet routs from the main glacier are risky... Caldera... Plots... The auto positioning of the recent bigger ones
  17. Yes it is Kv...The link is not available for me to give, But when I can get to the computer I will post occasional snips. The officials in Iceland are very nice, they let us post snips rather than linking, it helps prevent swamping(eruptions go viral quick), the picture is credited at the bottom, my thanks go to them profusely...At least we can see. Weather permitting.
  18. First time I have seen the fissure today So it has not stopped yet, the danger for Bada is when the fissure stops I think. The back pressure , like EJ in 2010.
  19. Looks like a fresh eruption in the background Mila 1, the edge of the glacier, almost certain. Yes I think it is that black cloud in the background is rising too fast. I think there is a lot of steam as it has just got through the ice, stand by for some evidence of hot stuff. Jon Frimann is not sure, Carls lot say no, I am still not 100% but I thing we will find out in the morning on the ice near the fissure.
  20. Well the swelling could be something else. Just coincidental. I think the signs of rifting acceleration, are there, now two very large volcanoes are swelling , and the fissure still erupts. With less gas, .....that goes to the volcanoes then....The gas. Boom. Atmospheric conditions dictate lava meeting a glacial melt water river, is with barley a hiss...http://mashable.com/2014/09/11/iceland-bardabunga-volcano-eruption-photos/ The steam is condensed 100's feet in the air, think hot no steam, superheated steam...What looks like a small amount of steam is not at all, it is gas. Scale is immense, for instance this whole flight is just over part of Grims...EeeeeeeeeK.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yRzmr_r1gY, the whole flight is over just one slope of the beast. We all know of course that Bada is bigger than Grims, its like a nasty dream sometimes. Like when you are falling immense distances whilst dreaming. The volcano is big, all of these Iceland ones are very big, they are all nasty if they want. Better than a book at bedtime. ZZZZZZZZ L8r's
  21. Yes it can happen if the pressure and conditions are right for shield building, at the moment conditions at the fissure are good for shield building, continuous runny lava that is not explosive. Just like Hawaii. But with Vikings in the stead of Hawaiians, opposite in climate. Bada and Grims are expanding, shields can be made aswell. The rift still rifts. At such times the behavior of domestic animals is observed, likewise their wild counterparts. In parts of Iceland it is dangerous to be outside now. Volcanoes really are full on. It could be like that where we live, if the Earth want's, 99% says she is fine with us at the moment. Some Viking friends of our may not be so lucky. I have some ginger in my beard, so some of their blood is with me...LOL I hope they are OK, it must be worrying for some(not many, just a few, vikings can usually take it, like all that you can throw at them and some) Still hope they are OK though. Latest chart poached of off Vikings.... Recived with thanks, best wishes. Grimsvotn. = Grims. I am holding them to account, the ginger bit of my beard was the first to go gray....... Eeeek..Help I toast to the Vikings "Skol, Skol, skol, skol ..Sk ...sk.......l................ Nice view, Bada, in front of Grims, just...20:40 UK, the view is the Fissure eruption at H, behind is Bada, and the curvature of the Earth precludes a view of Grims, she swells...So does Bada. This is a large rift, mmm. It could just stop. To bed, don't panic in geological time I do not exist, neither do you. Looks like some Chav's have set fire to some tyres.
  22. Carl and Jon on there Volcano blogs today, mentioned Grim's. She erupted in 2011 and in three days did what EJ did in total in 2010. The largest eruption on Earth in the 21St Century, indeed the largest eruption on Earth in this milenium. Under the volcano is still up toward 1200C the rock, elements like metal and gasses are at deep underground pressure under Grim's. They are contained, the volcano has her own eruptive cycles and is fed differently by a different source than Bada and her fissure, H. Problem is that the fissure has been eroding away at herself underground and has self pressurized by mining away at supporting rock, causing collapses and the dreaded restrictions that build up pressure behind them. Grims is next door and has only recently done the largest eruption to date in the 2!st century on the entire Earth, yes Grim's is tops since 2000AD. She is still smoking hot and vulnerable to hot magma under pressure finding a way in. My view is that if the mantle injection goes in there she will do what she did in 2011, plus keep going until there is a blockage or a newer easier breakout down the slope. Either way if the rift mantle pressure stops then everything stops, except anything that has been left unstable, that will react in a acceptable fashion according to physics Its relentless, there will be a huge eruption during this volcanic episode we are in at the moment, the longer we leave it the worse it will be. Very dangerous times, we are privileged to know about such threats to our well being, in this modern age. I hope it stops now, perhaps a VE 4 for good measure, but I hope it stops. Sorry I forgot to point out above that Grims is inflating, quicker than is usual at the moment.
  23. Yes and spreading out, perhaps as the glacier subsides into the melt pit I think that probably nails the position of a fissure eruption that has been mentioned by officials in Iceland. The lava of which, runs to the East.
  24. The wave on its way back... dyn station at the peak. The rifting continues, longer waves. Service time. Presume lava is flowing through tunnels now only occasional sight on lava flow... If this was UK, farmer would be about to loose his diesel tank. Bada is inflating ATM the Bada caldera is sinking, the rift is spreading and the lava is still pouring out of the rift eruption, see photo above. If anything stops there will be a bang. There are waves, it is during these waves that it will happen, right at the peak, most probably, its the pressure at the peak you see. Must go to bed now, I hope it has not happened before I wake up tomorrow,( if I do that is... )
  25. We are so evolved that we can understand such logic, don't bet on this rift episode does not effect our future, it well could. It could switch off and everything go on as normal at any time. The load remains on the North Atlantic rift fault and her cross faults. Most do not enter such conversation on the internet (with a small I) It is dodgy ground, but volcanoes make dodgy ground. Science does not know, has not been there nor done that. Mr Lucas, Iceland did Star Wars OK? The sun and her pulses may effect the readings tonight on the drums and other like equipment, so we are blind anyhow, god with a small G I am humbled. If this is a long period wave beginning then it is very big... Very in this episode, I have not seen such...
