  1. The three above on the list might be interesting. Over at Bada this uptic could have been lava movement only time will tell. I hope he picks up after that... I wonder where the nearest dog bin is.... https://twitter.com/EIlyinskaya?original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fvolcanocafe.wordpress.com%2F2014%2F09%2F03%2Fbardarbunga-update-20140903%2F&tw_i=507483661193981952&tw_p=tweetembed Another Twitter that is worth keeping an eye on. Another https://twitter.com/MikeBurton_Volc
  2. Put it this way it has raised eyebrows in Iceland...Still only auto checked as of 13;11 UK time. Hence the 90% rather than the 99% My guess is that they will stay checking Bada unless more happens in the Katla area, the Katla quakes may not be manually reviewed until later in the afternoon, if at all, all depends on what happens next. Katla does do this sort of thing from time to time anyhow so that is why they have not rushed to check it IMO... Still lots to check in the Bada area Very busy day for IMO Another mag 4 ish at Bada just. Where would we be without dogs, they know better than us when to run, very sensible move taking a Collie they are the best of the lot regarding senses
  3. Almost complete ring now(of the larger EQ's), whether this is significant remains to be seen...
  4. Now we have a 5+ possible at the Bada area....Things are hotting up I think. Katla still developing no manual check results as yet... Still no manual review as of 12;45 UK time... Helicopter landing yesterday http://www.reykjavikhelicopters.com/volcano-iceland/ Bada 3d today for those that can not open this... http://baering.github.io/
  5. There has just been a mag 5+ can't tell where yet, possibly Bada. DYN is not that big though so it may be away from Bada, we will see. Eeek it was somewhere near Katla and EJ by the looks of things... Or even Hekla, shock... There were two EQ's both Mag 5 plus, looking more like Katla now to me, but we will have to wait for the experts to check, the auto resolutions show the quakes but are none committal regarding mag position or depth... The Godabunga equipment stopped working during the EQ.... That says it could be big at Katla or EJ... I can not access the plots on the map yet it is too busy...
  6. "We are at 800 meters above sealine; about 200 metres above the potential reach of a glacial flood, quite safe and sound." I like the faith in reasoning. "We will be fine in Askja hut." I hope you are safe and well and I hope you take pictures for all to see in the ensuing very interesting period. Good luck to the 30. Grímsvötn lake is filling up ATM nicely, don't even think about dropping that in the hot fissure... Did somebody(Carl and friends at VC) say possibility of "evolved magma" being in Badas' ring fault area, bad bad stuff that, it blows up too easy like TNT. That would make my VE 5 a 6 dead easy. DYN 4+ just I think 21;48 Iceland time. It is registered at 2014-09-03 20:41:27 -17.385 64.668 0.8 0.6 auto It will be checked then given a Mag rating(as late as tomorrow in this rush)*. Looks like a big drop in tremor after that quake, a trough I think. That could be magma/lava on the move. The auto correct has revised up to 2014-09-03 20:41:27 -17.414 64.668 2.2 8.7 qu Already... The only Red circle on this caldera map On the way back up again with the tremor. 22;08 Iceland Uni today... Only DYN is still pumping now...Bada... @22;37UK. Can actualy see it better in the thumbnail without clicking Bada 1 cam is very nice ATM... Off now, last shot at where the action will be with the lava and the fissure, see line...
  7. There is a peculiar up and down that I think may be significant. It is probably out of our range as humans with all the kit in the field... Parallel rift destabilization. Like a letter Z (Bada in middle) perhaps, we will see. Something does not line up. The volcano is out of place I feel, peace and quiet may be disturbed/cut short at short notice...Only a thought and far from being fact I might add. In very slow motion a vortex, therefore rock grinding against rock in the vortex will heat up, magma in the vortex will heat up. It is all about various aspects of deep physics. Bada is a heat pump or rather she is the product of one. Here we go again...21;14 UK time ... Waves and troughs getting bigger...
  8. There has been an uptick at just before 8 our time. Don't be surprised if the Bada1 cam fissure runs out of smoke for a bit. I am dining so I will be brief...
  9. Here she is at 19;16 UK time Saturated alluvial deposits are yellow when the river is en flow, otherwise trib's dry out... Sign of the times even the rain drop is a question mark... Just soon as the orange dots get here we will know The first on 99% will do Confirmed are . Very near now On the other hand this one has encountered pressure of the immovable object kind of late If you ask me the crack is chasing something that it has chased before.....
  10. Is that Grims...? It looks very like it. She basically looks like that gradually snowed over since 2011 eruption.I am almost certain that is the picture you posted Grímsvötn today or recently.(sorry about the bold type, I copy pasted Grímsvötn because I do not have a ö on my keyboard ) I think we are looking at this ... Right now 18;53 UK time Fissure cut through saturated alluvial flood plane= Dangerous explosive activity probable. 70/30 odds on. Closer shot 18;57 If a lot of water suddenly hit a 1000 degree wall of porous alluvial pebbles/sand mix it(the explosion) would catapult the pebbles a long way, great fun on mythbusters perhaps...
  11. I think you are right about the Ice, Do you think the possible lava is only flowing out under the ice rather than, the fountains like further North? Is the water running off without getting at the magma? there must be some melting. There are planes and helicopters flying all over the place today, lets hope we get some pictures soon.
  12. The glacier will take a few hours melting above the "glacier fissure" If it is say 200 m high fountains, it should be through by tea time, I suppose. We will see..... If there is no eruption and it is just the earth moving apart and collapsing down under the glacier in to the void created by the fissure/rifting movement then noting further may happen and it/we move on to something else... My best shot is that more lava has reached the surface and it may break through, there will be water flowing somewhere I think, the question is where, this could be a big help deciding whats happening...Water. They(IMO) can tell if more flows in to the lake in the crater of Grims' I think. Anyhow, all very interesting indeed. The uptic is very clear now. About 10;20 Iceland time looking quickly without glasses.
  13. Uptick, looks like business as usual till 10:30(Iceland time), then an increase, maybe EQ swarm increase as well as tremor...Lava flow rate increase maybe? I wonder has the Mag 5.5 this morning got any connection to this uptick? White van man... LOL Tornado at 12;43 UK time Still going on 1300 UK...
  14. Yes I don't think we need to worry too much at the moment, it would take a fissure a good while to build up to an annoying level. Dont fancy the acid on the lungs bit Uprated quake 20:42:18 64,678 -17,459 4,5 km 3,8 99,0 5,3 km NA af Bárðarbungu Matched the chart on post 602 very well. Jón Frímann • 4 hours ago posted 23;20 I did read the reports on the explosion. Where and why they happened is unknown as of know. That detail might be come clearer in the next few hours. It also seems that current eruption fissure is closing up and magma in the crust might be (most likely in my view) looking for a new way out.
  15. Those fountains were estimated at 200m high today... Nice...
  16. SO2 is worse than ash on the weather I think. It effects the weather for a long time as it stays up there, ash on the other hand falls out of the sky quite quickly in comparative terms.
  17. The SO2 could make it a tad colder, but not enough about at the moment, if over a period of time it built up, well perhaps it could give us a bit of a chilly one, I must admit I don't know enough about the SO2 subject to comment further. I know one thing it is harder to shift from the stratosphere when erupted nearer the poles than the equator. Bada is still doing the caldera rumble I think look at DYN
  18. So much more to this eruption I feel, I am sure we are in for more treats too. Note:- When that lava gets to that river it will steam alright...
  19. I would love to see this in real life, but am very glad people like Gisli Dua are there to see this and show us all, outstanding..... I hope this fissure keeps up for a while, more on Bada soon I feel, she is not done yet, just awakening from a slumber quite possibly. Some sharp spikes at DYN I notice.
  20. Bet we get it wrong, Ill guess between 01:00Z and 04:00Z UK time. first of 3 quakes in a group max mag 5.1..... Caldera partial collapse within 7 days VE 5 eruption. Just what I feel not facts by a long chalk. File Bada EQ's
  21. I tried to line up the EQ's with the map in your post John ^^^ http://atlas.lmi.is/kortasja_en/ a nice link for understanding where things are, beware some of the names are totally unmouthable The web cam Mila 1 and 2 are on the mountain top right of map file 2... Night shot File 3... The NW of Askja EQ swarm File 4 ...
  22. Quote Pall Einarsson, professor of geophysics at University of Iceland "These strong earthquakes are the consequence of magna streaming out of the chamber beneath the caldera", says Pall Einarsson, professor of geophysics at University of Iceland´s Institute of Earth Sciences. "The magma chamber is clearly subsiding, thus reacting to the considerable amount of magma that has been streaming out towards the dike intrusion," says Einarsson. "Analysis of these earthquakes supports this conclusion, as well as nearby GPS measurements of land deformation. We call this pressure changes in the roof of the magma chamber; in effect, the top of the volcano is sinking ever so slightly." I noted that in 1477 Bada had a VE 6 eruption that's the same size as Krakatoa I think, it is documented as an explosion.....Presume that's where this massive caldera came from, now the problem is the 85 square Kilometers of ice at 600m thick sat on top shaking and being heated from below at would you believe 1200c yes 1200 centigrade Worse thing is everything seems to be slowing down a bit at thr moment, with Icelandic volcanoes that is potentially dangerous. As nothing big has happend yet. EJ in 2010 had a fissure stop erupting and it blew its top in a newsworthy manner a day or so later. Slow down file 1... Fissure still cooking, File 2... The glow is back...File 3... Matches the sky because the fissure is providing the illumination File 4... Latest SO2 maps. File 5 and 6... If there was any ash it would likely go the same way... Night time. File 7... Askja has just wobbled a bit possibly... something near by maybe? File 8...right hand side at the end...
  23. No ash at the moment just gas mainly SO2 It has been stated today that it is 400 tons of SO2 per second into the atmosphere.
  24. 85 square kilometers @ 600m thick, truly hard to stop once it starts moving. Its the largest potential for a Krakatoa like event I have ever herd of. I did not think we were near anything like that in the UK but if it goes all at once we will hear it from here I think..... Fissure eruption looks deceptively pretty at the moment.
