I would be interested V, i cant say i am impressed at the sites i have found on the Internet (perhaps i don't know where to look), whenever anything happens its just the often sensationalist press reports to filter through, or on the Volcano sites , all you get is a massive list of(in broken English) reports listing every single Volcano in the world leaving you to pick your way through to find any news, which takes ages and the reports are hard to understand(for me). I will look here in future. Regards, Russ

It wasn't I thoroughly enjoyed and am still enjoying reading about it here though, that makes up for missing out IMO. The pictures people send in are good too. I miss the snow but I am sure we will all get it one day. Russ

Unlike further North in the UK the IOW(South Eastern Part at least) was largely unaffected damage wise, from what i saw, i drove from Brading via:- Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, St Catherine's Point to Blackgang, then in a straight route back to Brading via Godshill and Apse Heath. (all the above places are on Google Earth) When i got to Blackgang however i did note the weather and sea looked much worse to the West and North West.(time of observation (1550Z) Russ

Sounds like more than a passing resemblance to what could happen this year IMO Mr Data. I remember the 76 storm, i drew a picture and was praised by my teacher for being the only one in class to pick the recent storm, just a couple of days earlier , she did ask for topical pictures Manchester airport tunnel road looked to me like the same level of destruction i observed in the later 87 storm.(in Manchester for the 76 and Herne bay for the 87) Its funny how that one isn't remembered as much. If there is ever a bad winter again lots of these plants will die, unless they are protected with insulation during the cold period. Quite amazing what actually grows in some parts of the UK, i didn't realise Scilly is rated tropical. Bananas may well grow in Scilly, no doubt they'll blow over Russ

MCT. jpg, is my choice, its a very good photograph of unusual clouds, taken at an unearthly hour, i think he got up before 4 and drove 80 miles! Even made it on TV. If you look at the picture full size its worthy of a place in an art gallery IMO -
Weather Action Blizzard Forecast...
Rustynailer replied to Paul Sherman's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I agree with you GW totally. I remember in 1994 April i think, heavy rain turned to snow over here, the roads accross most of the island stopped! Totally caught forecasters by surprise, the media certainly hit the forecasters with that one, not sure of the synoptic set up. The biggest snowflakes i have ever seen then fell for a few hours on and off (meaning the snow went small again, but didn't stop), we had 6-7 inches of very heavy wet snow that collapsed our rabbit run, (the rabbits survived) and felled some trees, and smashed up others, branches all over the fields in some places. Frustratingly i have a picture facing South at according to the camera 1629hrs i think that will be 1529hrs. I noticed the nice clouds, so went to Culver to take pic's and walk the dog. The view is from Culver down (nr Bembridge) looking across Sandown Bay towards Shanklin at 1529hrs on the day in question, hope this helps Also this is the Eastern view with Kelly's pink cloud(see earlier in this thread) I didn't even look North as the hill was in the way Russ

Storm Reports December 29th onwards
Rustynailer replied to Paul R's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
Fantastic, i have been waiting for somebody to describe something even remotely like what i saw when i was a kid and haven't seen since We were moving house at the time, there was a terrific storm with this lightning a bit like you described more or less. Father was driving us along in the car, following a van full of our furniture, when a storm that was flashing in the distance got to us. I was very scared so was mum. The ball of blue seemed to be the center of this lightning that traveled right across the sky and the whole island(Jersey, in case anybody else remembers) was lit up like under a strip light, the same intensity and colour. The storm lasted several hours, the whole family was fascinated in the end by the lightning emanating from a strange ball of vivid bright blue light and the really loud long thunder. We all sat at the curtain-less windows watching it, we had no choice as the power was out I was 7ish at the time my parents still refer to "that storm" and i have been hooked on weather especially thunder storms/snow ever since I think it was 1973, sorry for going off topic but i just had to say -
The view from Shanklin's Littlestairs rd cliffs, looking at Sandown Pier in the rough seas just after dinner on Christmas day 1990, sorry about the quality It was a memorable day, the only Christmas Day storm i have ever experienced. Russ.
