  1. Still heavy snow here. Theres been at least another inch of snow from this shower.
  2. Very heavy snow in Gateshead, I would say theres +10cm on the ground.
  3. Just been out taking the dog for a walk, lovely snowfall here, I would say there is around 10cm of level snow and more in drifts.
  4. Aye plenty of snow here too, and it's now snowing moderately again.
  5. It has been snowing on and off here all night and theres around 5-10cm on the ground. There was still plenty of remnants of the snow and ice from the last time it snowed. This is the best cold spell here for a long time. Happy New Year !!! Snowing moderately here now, I think we may have the best snowfall of the cold spell judging by the radar.
  6. My car thermometer read -18C on the 8th or 9th Feb this year up in Aviemore.
  7. Lovely pictures OON. It amazes me how the bookies don't class lying snow as a white christmas. We've got lying snow here at christmas for the first time in many a year and it's just strange its not classed officially as a white christmas.
  8. Well its been an official white christmas here as we had a snow shower around 11.30pm. We have got a good covering of snow on the ground which we've had since last thursday so this cold spell is exceptional in that respect. We haven't had lying snow this long since new year 96/97 I believe. I think if we keep the lying snow for the next few days and we get the next cold spell which looks fairly likely, we may end up with around three weeks lying snow which would be truely exceptional. Certainly the higher parts of the region (and parts of Scotland) are looking at a long spell of lying snow. I thought that we would of probably of had a thaw yesterday but instead we had a few more cm's of snow yesterday morning and temps didn't rise above 1c today. Just shows what embedded cold can do. Merry Christmas everyone. SW
  9. I think this has been an excellent cold spell. We have had a full week of lying snow here and at least a couple of ice days. We received numerous snow showers off the initial easterly, a good snowfall off the frontal snow event on saturday night and although we didn't get much after that we did get a good few cms off the heavy snow earlier today (which I thought might be rain). The cold just seems to be lingering and another cold blast doesn't look to be far around the corner. There will be a good covering of snow on the ground on Christmas day here in Gateshead, the first white christmas in many a year.
  10. Again people saying that chart will bring snow on Jan 1st and so on need to be reminded that snow is a very marginal and can be very hard to forecast even a few hours beforehand as the past few days have proved. Looking at charts for anyhting +120hrs should just be looked at for the overall trend from the past few days. Others and I said there would be a cold spell three weeks ago based on GFS trends and have been proved correct. The overall pattern at the moment is again for another spell of colder weather coming around the New Year. To go into specifications would be silly but as the past week has shown once you actually get the cold weather in place then snow is possible almost anywhere but it is very hard to forecast accurately. Some of the best snowfalls are the ones that evolve very quickly(Cairngorm mountain received almost 2ft of snow last night that wasn't forecast and the snowfall in the south east on monday night I believe wasn't forecast accurately). Also we have had nearly a week of lying snow here and at least a couple of ice days this has been an excellent cold spell for me and I hope the models are correct and we are in for more of the same. I'm going skiing up in the pennines near Alston tomorrow !!! Interestingly after last winter and this cold spell, what are the implications on the 'even larger teapot' theory ?
  11. Hi Guys, I'm travelling down to Colne (Trawden) in Lancashire tomorrow, its not far from Burnley, anyone know what the conditions are like down there at the moment. Judging by some pics I've seen which were taken not far from that area I'd imagine there must be some snow there. Anyone know what conditions are like currently ?
  12. Beautiful day today, very cold with very little snow melt and Newcastle beat Middlesboro 2-0 - Brilliant day !!! Was at my aunties this evening who lives in Great Lumley above Chester Le Street, there was around an inch more snow there. Noticed the temp was hovering around freezing on the way back in the car.
  13. Gorky - lovely pics mate, looks similar to what its like here although you seem to have a little more snow. Heres hoping for more snow to come. Whoever hasn't seen snow must of been extremely unlucky through missing out on the easterly and then this front coming down from the north. Here we had numerous showers from the easterly which amounted to around 2cm and then tonight we had about 2 hours of heavy / moderate snow which deposited around 10cm. Yes I'd imagine some spots on the North York Moors will have a lot of snow, I bet theres some deep drifts up there.
  14. This snowfall reminded me of the Jan 28th 04 snowfall and deposited a similar amount of snow. Northerly's often deliver for this location either in the form of a front coming down or through showers coming in off the north sea. Measured 10cm outside on the step although I think there was around 2cm already lying from the previous few days. Its amazing what a slight differnce in height can make to snowfall depths, literally just up the hill there is markedly more snow and at the top (QE hospital) I'd imagine there might be nearly an inch more. Haven't got a thermometer but feels very cold out there. I'm hoping some of those showers in the west make it over here tomorrow for a further top up. If we still have snow on the ground on Wednesday, which looks entirely possible, we will have had snow on the ground for nearly a week. I would imagine it will be the longest period of lying snow for quite a while. Lets just hope the breakdown keeps getting pushed back and we get a cold spell akin to the 70's 80's etc.
  15. For all you worried when it starts raining, thats what happened here despite cold temps all day but after about 10mins it turned to heavy snow. Do not worry !!!
  16. Around 5-10cm here, looks like there is a bit more up at Stanley which would be expected. Fairly pleased with what we've got its like a winter wonderland out there.
  17. Well actually reading back I can see what you mean, I apologise.
  18. Nope, late Feb 05 and March 12 06 are at least two occasions I can recall when theres been more snow down there. My Grandma just lives at Rushyford. Maybe even Dec 5 08 and early Feb 09 would both of had more snow.
  19. Snow petering out now, its snowed around about 1 -2 inches.
  20. Moderate to heavy snow here for the past hour nearly.
  21. A few flakes coming down in Gateshead. Not had anything since the moderate shower around 7pm that around 1-2cm. I'm hoping we get a bit more of a top up overnight. With regard to distance from coast, I've seen it go both ways... I can remember once (sure it was 1999) that there was no snow here in Gateshead but a good couple of inches on the seafront at Tynemouth, which I'm sure was off a northerly where showers were clipping the coast a mile or two inland there was nothing. I also recall having a good cover of snow here but going to play football in South Shields and finding there was no snow at all there on the coast (probs mid 90's). Actually its coming down a little heavier now.
  22. Regarding low temps, last year when I was in Aviemore (Scotland) the temp got down to -20C on the night of the 8th. Once the cold becomes embedded temps can really fall away at night. I wouldn't be suprised to see some extremely low minima next week. This cold spell seems to becoming entrenched with the cold not wanting to go away. I believe the GFS is the best at spotting patterns and the overall trend is prolonging the cold weather. I would expect that there will be some deep snowcover over higher northern areas by the end of next week. Hopefully we will see a proper cold spell akin to 'yesteryear' and maybe some will argue there is a shift from the 'even larger teapot' era after last years fairly cold winter. It would be interesting to hear Ian Browns thoughts on the matter.
  23. Heaviest snow shower of the day here here in Gateshead at the moment, proper snowflakes as well not like the hail type snow last night. Showing -1C on the car thermometer.
  24. A couple more cms here overnight. Just a thin cover overall.
