  1. light snow here at mo but not worth standing outside for. Suprised how bone chilling the wind is already and how much snow had aready blown out of fields along the country roads on the way home. Think drifting will be more of an issue in the next few days than snowfall as was already several inches deep over long stretches in a few places, give it overnight and some places round here could have 8" drifts !!!

  2. "Drivers have begun abandoning their vehicles on the A27 at Park Gate because they are unable to get traction on the road due to snow and ice.

The road is reportedly partially blocked between junction 9 of the M27 and Segensworth Road and Southampton Road, and queues are stretching back on to the motorway."

Posted on the Daily Echo website at 6:48. Usual idiot comments underneath :cold:

Thanks for the confirmation katemart, so late night shopping at Hedge End not the best moved I'd make tonight.

  3. Isn't it frustrating to be sooooo close.

Looks like once again for Hampshire its Portsmouth that gets the dumping! Unless all changes later.

I've just been looking at traffic cameras on traffic England. A27 near Portsmouth really bad with a depth of snow covering all carriageways, A3 Chichester area up to Guildford not too clever. Further North M4 around Reading looking bad too. http://www.trafficengland.com/index.aspx

  4. Saw the most amazing electric blue flash of lighning driving back from Andover tonight, been heavy rain in our area all day. Although I wasn't home was told that Wallop saw nearly an inch of sleet earlier today. Was also told by my Dad that Middle Wallop was reported on the news as the coldest place in England at -10 last night. We drove back from Southampton at around 10pm last night, the car registered -8 in the freezing fog at that time.

With the snow we've had, the frost, the freezing fog, rain and sleet with thunder and lightning, surface water flooding on the roads, I've got to say these have been a few of the most exciting days of weather I've seen for some time :(

  5. Don't know if anyone can help. I was told this morning that Wallop had a mention on the local news last night for the wind speeds yesterday.

I was at home and at one point just after a period of rain passed through the wind, which had been coming steady from the SW, changed direction dramatically to the NW with a huge gust knocking over large containerised trees and wheelie bins in our garden. I dont know the speed and also wondered what the techincal name is for a gust like this which seems to be in reverse of everything else.

  6. Brief thunder storm here at 4am this morning, one large bolt of lightning looked like it hit metal containers used by workmen renovationg our village hall (the type used on container ships) Reports of marble sized hail and localised flooding from people in Salisbury from around breakfast time this morning.

  7. Woken up by long low rumble of thunder at 4am this morning. This was followed shortly after by a single bolt of lightning and instant thunder, then very heavy rain. Suspect the lightning may have struck metal contractors containers or scaffolding in the village hall across the road as very very close.

  8. quoting one small extract of the above Sun article posted by Coast:

Forecasters have advised people to stay indoors over the weekend if possible.

It's that kind of comment which annoys me. I've lived long enough to see Autumn storms like this in the UK time and time again. Yes there will be some problems and there will be a tree or two down if the winds reach the speeds forecast, all of which make for great pictures in the news, but when you run a small High St shop like I do and you're fighting the credit crunch, rises in rates and rents and increased bank charges, the last thing small businesses want to see is forecasters telling everyone to stay at home on the first really busy Christmas shopping weekend of the year.

Alternatively you can shop with us online :cray:

  9. teletext.co.uk : Tornado sweeps across area. A tornado caused damage to cars and buildings when it swept through Hampshire, the Met Office has said http://bit.ly/3Fe3IP

    Full content of article:

    "Tornado sweeps across area

Police received scores of calls as what was described as a tornado moved from Romsey, across to Winchester and east to the Petersfield and Liss area.

Hampshire police recorded incidents of trees down on properties, cars and roads in the areas. No-one was hurt."

Also now being reported by Bournemouth Echo:

Romsey hit by mini tornado (From Bournemouth Echo): http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/34503/4717317

  10. local radio station Spire FM based in Salisbury, Wiltshire has reported a lucky escape for four motorists who's car was hit by a falling tree in Whiteparish. The driver reported seeing trees being ripped from their roots and said it was like being in a mini tornado. Police also reported a string of emergency calls from Downton and Whiteparish after strong winds and rain battered the area. No further information currently available.
