The question that I am asking just before heading to bed is can that blob heading due South towards Angus make it through to here. Just the Sidlaws in the way shortly. edit. The lighter blue patch just to the South of the main area has reached here and is giving me light snow right now so hoping for a bit more from the following larger area of precipitation.

UK winters: are they getting colder?
Norrance replied to qwertyK's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Scotland has had some decent Winter spells in the last few years and Aberdeenshire following quite a long poor spell has had good snowfalls in the last six years or so particularly from North Westerlies. The northern Highlands too have done well. However I am one of those that keeps records of mountain snows and there the situation tells a different story. The only really decent year for skiing recently was 2021 and unfortunately that coincided with lockdown. For those that monitor snow patches and if they survive through to the next winter sadly the records tell a rather sad story. Below are the years that the snow all melted. As you can see the snow all melted more than twice as often since 2000 than it had since they started keeping records way back in the 1700s. (Though the records before the late 1800s cannot be 100% reliable that period was significantly colder than what we are used to now. You can add last year 2923 to the list below as the last patch went by mid September. "According to records, it previously melted fully in 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006, 2017, 2018, 2021 and now 2022. Before 1933, it is thought to have last melted completely in the 1700s" So overall for the Highlands it has definitely got warmer. -
Stv news had Sean Batty saying that he expects, 30,40 or even 50cms in the Ullapool, Loch Broom area in the next three days. Don't know if we have anyone in that area but it is pretty close to Skye. Will certainly beat my 1cm. Further ahead some signs of high pressure eventually heading to the NE by early Feb with possible Easterlies on the cards.

Dew point still around -1C here and we have light snow falling and covering the ground. Will still take a long time to get a decent covering. I do like the Auld Bridge too. My cousin used to live just along the road from it and was a handy baby sitter when we went out there for a meal and drink or too on hols back in the day.

North American Weather (U.S.A & Canada)
Norrance replied to Derbyshire_snow's topic in Weather Around The World
Our pals in Indiana are currently sunny at -15C and forecast to go down to -22C tonight. That is pretty cold for there and a shock to the system after what has been a very mild winter. Back to normal or slightly above next week after a cold and at times snowy (though mostly light) week. -

I do hope that the mid range is not suggesting high pressure setting up to the East or South East after this week. -
You are correct. Was confirmed by John Holmes I think. Has to be under zero though am not really too bothered. Still a pretty cold day though but now back up to -0.4C so on the rise. Just checked again and now +0.8C so a rapid rise in the last few minutes and making any argument about 0.0C irrelevant. edit. Just as I have been typing it has gone up again to 1.5C. Wow!
