  1. UK long range weather forecast Friday 8 Mar - Sunday 17 Mar A largely dry start to this period with variable cloud and just a few light showers, sunniest in the west. However, while such conditions will be maintained across the north, there is an increasing chance of more unsettled weather returning from the south or southwest during the first weekend, with spells of rain moving north and tending to weaken as they do so. This sets the broad pattern for the subsequent week, with periods or rain or showers in the south accompanied by strong winds at times, and brighter but occasionally showery conditions across the north. Temperatures are most likely to be close to normal, but perhaps mild at times in the south and, especially early on, locally rather cold in the north. Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Sun 3 Mar 2024 Monday 18 Mar - Monday 1 Apr During the second half of March, pressure is likely to remain higher than average to the north or northwest of the UK, which would push the focus of unsettled weather further south than usual (especially early in this period), although there are signs that changeable weather patterns may return more widely later in the month. The greatest build-up of rain is therefore most likely to be in the south, with northern areas rather drier compared with normal. Temperatures will probably be near average overall, with some colder interludes most likely in the north and east. 2. Meanwhile a monster snowstorm has hit the mountains of California and Nevada. Because it us heavy wet stuff it has broken plough blades.
  3. Scottish-Irish Skier Have been to Val Thorens previously so can say that you would be guaranteed snow in the area and some pretty exciting skiing. We were there in March and the level snow was about 7 feet with the recent individual winter falls being identifiable where the road had been ploughed. While there we had one heavy fall and also experiences diamond dust in bright sunshine in very cold air up top. Incidentally I have skied Schladming twice with great conditions and Bad Gastein once so you were maybe unlucky. Schladming also had the bar that was open all night where you could go for a pizza (or more beer) when the night club closed. At least one person in our group who shall remain nameless (but may be known to at least one person that reads this) went straight to skiing from that pub one morning.
  4. The temperature here rose this evening and 10 minutes ago was 4.3C. Rain started, turned heavy and within minutes turned to sleet with temps dropping 2 degrees. Easing off a little now but still a bit sleety. Anyone else have a quite dramatic orange/red sky earlier? Thought that was a prediction of fair weather. Just as I am away to post heavier and sleety again.
  5. The further range still going with a higher likelihood of winds from the North or East, pretty much as it had all Winter. Low likelihood in the medium range of colder winds from the East. UK long range weather forecast Wednesday 6 Mar - Friday 15 Mar Likely still some showers for some parts of the country at the start of the period but generally from the middle of next week a more widespread dry spell of weather is likely to develop. This would see increasing amounts of sunshine. Temperatures most likely trending above average though still with chilly nights at times. However, there is a lower probability and conditions turning colder with easterly winds. Some rain will be remain possible at times, though this will probably be confined to western parts of the UK. Towards mid-month conditions will probably start to turn more unsettled again, especially across the south, where rain and showers could become frequent and heavy at times. Northern areas more likely to have further decent spells of fine, dry weather. Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Fri 1 Mar 2024 Saturday 16 Mar - Saturday 30 Mar During the rest of the month, there is an increase in the chance of blocking patterns, with winds blowing more frequently from the north and east than is usual. At this time of year, winds from this direction can still bring wintry hazards, such as snow and ice, but the risk of these is likely to decrease as the month progresses. The wettest conditions are most likely to be in the south, with northern areas drier overall. Overall temperatures are more likely to be near or below average, though some warmer days are still possible at times. Updated: 15:00 (UTC) on Fri 1 Mar 2024
  6. Nice and sunny in Dundee this morning after a frosty start. Up to Aberdeen pm for a couple of days. Bright ints up here too and cool this evening but no frost at least so far. Rain forecast later tonight.
  7. Hawesy Maybe tonight? Just gone under 0C here.under clear skies with the light Easterly breeze having died down. Last night here it went under -2C with the temp at 22.00hrs being +2.5C

  9. Glaswegianblizzard That is defo a new one for me. Thunder snow from the Caribbean!
  10. Bright intervals here too after an early frost. More cloud pm but stayed dry. Max of 7C from a min of -2C. Currently mostly cloudy at 3C
  11. Todays update. UK long range weather forecast Thursday 29 Feb - Saturday 9 Mar A broad band of cloud and rain likely spreading across much of the UK through Thursday morning, windy at times particularly in the northwest. Likely turning increasingly showery across north-western areas, as some drier spells develop in the east. From Friday and through the weekend, generally unsettled conditions with areas of showers sometimes banding together for longer spells of rain, this heavy at times. Clearer spells overnight with some frost or fog patches developing. Into the new week conditions move to occasional frontal systems affecting further western areas with occasionally more settled spells developing in eastern areas as settled conditions spread out from northern Europe. Remaining around average temperatures for the time of year though some short-lived colder interludes remain likely. Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Sat 24 Feb 2024 Saturday 9 Mar - Saturday 23 Mar Increasing likelihood that a more blocked weather pattern will develop with more settled conditions most likely affecting the east with winds favouring a more south or south-westerly direction mid-March, bringing most rainfall across western areas and largely drier to the east. Temperatures are likely to be near or slightly above normal overall, with occasional night frosts, but values will fluctuate as weather systems come and go. 12. Asher The frost itself breaks up the soil as it melts.
  13. My father was a very keen gardener from a farming back ground and always said that a good frost was essential for the soil the following season. At least we have had some decent frosts this Winter both in early Dec and Mid Jan though only one or two light air frosts in Feb.
  14. Marches 1968, 1969 and 1970 were three good ones in a row.
  15. Didn't last long here either but was torrential for a few minutes as the squall went through. Now clear again and cooler at 6C.
  16. Nice day here too at least up to lunchtime. Feeling Springlike at 12.5C and sunny but by late afternoon 7.5C with mostly cloudy skies and light showers.
  17. Don yes big change. UK long range weather forecast Tuesday 20 Feb - Thursday 29 Feb Tuesday likely seeing increasingly cloudy conditions with rain across north-western areas, this sinking to lie across southern England and Wales through Wednesday, with some areas of fog likely associated with this and a drier and brighter day for Scotland. Temperatures staying mostly mild. Conditions remain unsettled with a further band of rain then turning showery with clearer conditions in the east by the weekend, returning the UK to more average temperatures for the time of year. From Saturday conditions expected to remain unsettled with occasional bands of rain or showers, heaviest rainfall affecting the northwest though most areas likely to see some rainfall. Occasional strong winds especially in north-western areas, with more settled conditions across the south and east where driest and brightest conditions most likely. Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Thu 15 Feb 2024 Friday 1 Mar - Friday 15 Mar First half of March liable to see a slightly higher than normal likelihood of winds from the west then edging northerly later in the period. This likely leading to initially unsettled conditions with transitory settled periods and a milder Atlantic feel before increasing likelihood of colder and drier than average conditions toward mid-month. Updated: 15:00 (UTC) on Thu 15 Feb 2024
  18. TillyS Yes Ben Wyvis. Looks like a much better day up that way. Here cold, misty and damp with drizzly rain this afternoon.
  19. Looks like todays Met update has been missed so here it is. UK long range weather forecast Friday 16 Feb - Sunday 25 Feb This period will likely begin with cloud and rain moving away from east or southeast Britain to give a brief more settled spell with patchy overnight fog or frost. How long this drier weather lasts is uncertain, as mild, cloudy conditions with outbreaks of rain or drizzle are expected to return from the west or southwest either later in the first weekend or early the following week. Further into the period, spells of wet and windy weather remain likely, these probably more focussed than usual across south and southwest UK, while there is a higher chance of colder, brighter interludes across the north. Towards the second weekend, there is a chance that less changeable conditions may become more widely established. Updated: 14:00 (UTC) on Sun 11 Feb 2024 Monday 26 Feb - Monday 11 Mar During late February and early March, there is a higher than normal likelihood of northerly or easterly winds dominating, which would increase the chance of colder and drier than average conditions. Spells of milder and wetter weather are still likely to occur at times, especially in the south and southwest, with the potential for snow on the boundary between milder and colder air. Updated: 15:00 (UTC) on Sun 11 Feb 2024
  20. Blessed Weather yes she is fine. Really enjoyed her holiday.
  21. Sis -in-law on her first run of her last day. Ended up with bruised ribs but not too bothered as visibility was poor and it was the last day. They had a good week despite some quite high temps. The benefits of going high. Not happy at my brov as he stopped to take a photie while some locals helped her
  22. Miserable here this morning. Very strong ESE wind bringing in bursts of rain and sleet. Cold at 1.4C. Crucially though wet bulb is 0.6C so our covering of snow from last night has gone. Btw thank you for the calculator @Hawesy
  23. Heavy shower just started here. Mix of snow flakes and graupely type ice particles. Lying right away. Making a right racket on the window. Almost like a streamer set up aiming this way. Temp dropped from 1.4C to -0.5C with the heavier precipitation.
