I wish I could lamppost watch but every time I go near a window, my dog starts barking and I don't want to annoy the neighbours
-
First post of this winter - hi everyone and good luck for oodles of snow. If someone needs a partner in the snow draw, I'm happy to oblige :-)
-
Countryfile says "dry and cold all week"! Phew - I have a flight to catch on Friday. Have loved this snow though - and I hope you all get loads after that :-)
-
Can confirm a quick walk down the local Total garage (5 minutes max) and on the return journey footprints have disappeared.
Is that the total garage on Rochester Maidstone road? If it is, we must almost be neighbours!
-
Confirm lightest snow I've ever seen in my life up here on Bluebell Hill. Not enough for settling, but, I think, this is the start of it. Will go out and have a sniff in a moment
Yep, had to squint hard at the lamp post but there are indeed some very small flakes in the air!
-
Yep, I'm in Rochester too at the top of a hill and nothing.
and me - hope it won't be too long. I'm starting to get death stares every time I twitch the curtains to look at the lamp post!
-
I know our focus is on tonight, but just a heads up that the GFS 12z is another cracking run for the SE towards Thursday and Friday.
Oh No! Where is the "unlike" button. As much as I love the snow, I'm supposed to be flying out of Heathrow next Friday - so it we could have just a little gap, so I can travel from Medway and get my flight - that would be perfect!
-
Hahahaha! My first post of this winter but I'm loving this thread tonight. The LP watching stuff is spot on. I hate the giant lamp post opposite my house all year round UNTIL it snows, and then it is my lifesaver! I hope everyone gets loads of snow but can I please ask that there is a nice clear road between Medway and Heathrow next Friday, so I can go on holiday
-
Well I'm back nice and early but instead of my normal glee at the prospect of snow, I DON'T want any this coming weekend! I'm off on holiday on Saturday and don't fancy spending the first night or two sleeping in the airport! Will be keep a close eye and hope you all get an absolute dumping of snow on Saturday night (but not before)
-
OK folks,my laptop battery is about to die so I bid you all good night. Quite a fun evening with these unpredicted snow showers popping up
I hope you all wake up in the morning with the amount of snow you're hoping for

Being one on your local Coastguards - the M2 Bridge is 27m above sea level, whereas Rochester airport is 123m above sea level - can you work it out from that? if not let me know your location (PM if necessary) and I will let you know..
Hope this helps
Best Regards
Bob
Bob - thanks for that. Will be about the same as the airport then as I'm pretty much next door to it! Only wanted a rough idea so you've saved me heaps of time
-
That's easier but I'll bet my os method is way more accurate...
No fighting now folks
I can't find the OS map for my location (I'm sure the Medway Town have been mapped, so must be my stupidity) so am downloading google earth now
Thanks for all the answers though - v helpful
-
good luck fella
I'm a laydeeee But thanks anyway!!
-
I just use streetmap on os explorer scale and work it out from the contour lines. Old school but very accurate!
Thanks old school sounds complicated but will have a look! Just tried earth tools but it keeps crashing my internet - grrr!
-
Is there anywhere on tinternet where you can find out your elevation? Ta
-
Also snowing in Rochester (bluebell hill end) and Whistable and Herne - seems like all of Kent is getting an unexpected shower
Question is - can anyone tell how long it will last and how much (if any) will be added to existing snow totals??
-
Had a bit of a thaw earlier - not significant though as everything is still covered. The snow did slide down my windscreen this morning but it has been replaced with the snizzle and snow we've had on and off since about 11am.
No idea what temp or dewpoint is here as I don't have the technology (or brains) to find out

Fantastic pic TN9

Hi I live in chatham - the main roads are fine - side roads are slushy but if you take it slowly should be fine - snowing on and off at the moment
Hope that helps x
At least you avoid Bluebell Hill - BBC Travel has that as partially blocked at the moment I don't think the area around Walderslade/Lordswood is great but as ThunderQueen says, the main roads Chatham Maidstone Rd etc should be OK
-
Still snowing here - and the snow that slid off the bonnet of my car earlier this morning is now replaced by a fine layer of new snow. Can't tell if it's settling anywhere else, as everywhere else is still covered in snow. Moderate snowfall and moderate sized flakes for 30 mins or so now.
-
We've had snizzle and light to moderate snow alternating for a few hours now. From the experts on here, it seems as if they're is nothing to indicate this on the radars etc. Do you think this will carry on for a while or end up turning to rain (or just stopping)? Wondering what the ice risk is for tomorrow morning as everyone starts returning to work?
Thanks

the showers in the estuary on turn westwards now.....
A bit of excitment from the sky this afternoon- just dont look at the melting snow & the wet ground!!!!!!
Another hour & they will be coming down the estuary directly to the west!!!!!
S
Steve, the way the media have forecast this, I wouldn't be at all surprised if we get a massive snowfall now that they've downgraded the likelihood
-
Hmm...stopped now but that was 5 minutes more snow than I was expecting
-
Heh! Just seen the massive downgrade forecast on the Beeb - looked out of the windown and we have a fairly heavy SNOW shower - this is proper snow, not the snizzle we had earlier

So true! Am now on iPod in bed next to sleeping hubby, so now lamppost watching for me. Any ideas on more snowfall overnight for either Rochester or Ramsgate? Have to get up to visit mother in law at 7 but I can stay in bed if the roads look iffy :-)
