Thought I'd throw my "hat into the ring" but I come from a different angle, to a lot of Members on here. I'm still partially Brontophobic, so don't have similar enthusiasm for t/storms but do have many years experience of these set-ups. A lot of our thundery "plumes" seem to approach from the SSW. Many times during the past 15 years, I've applied what I call the "Cherbourg Peninsula Test". I'm speaking from a London perspective here. I've found that these t/storms that initiate East of the Cherbourg Peninsula, tend to just affect E.Sussex and Kent (the infamous Kent Clipper). Those that initiate West of the Cherbourg Peninsula, if they have the "legs", can get to London.
Tonight's storm I would say is borderline for London but should give E.Sussex/Kent a good light show, at least. That's not to say that some more t/storms won't develop in the vicinity of this storm, as it heads towards our South Coast.
Try the "Cherbourg Peninsula Test", it has proved accurate so many times!!
Regards,
Tom.
Feel for you Tom. Find daylight storms exciting but develop a night-only fear/aversion to thunder/lightning, as does my young labrador so selfishly hoping the latest nw radar activity approaching south coast dissipates or bypasses my area. 10pm light drizzle didn’t last long but still very humid here as I post this.

Vicious 15 minutes of intense rain, hail and powerful wind gusts. Ours was a separate one, slightly south of the one hitting Cambridge that @Matty88 mentioned. Very clear incoming on the radar so able to delay taking the dog out -thank goodness. Now have paddling pools on lawn and drive with bright sunshine.

So pleased your daughters and granddaughter were either side of that and are ok.

Went to bed not expecting anything as thought I was too far north. Woke at 01:20 to see it a snow covering. An unexpected treat!
Snowing again now but looks as though there might also be a very slight thaw. Looking pretty though.
My young lab isn’t sure what to make of it - he’s daintily high-stepping around with exaggerated camp ballerina dramatics.

What a treat to be out walking the dog today. Clear, crisp air; beautiful, all too rare (this year) winter sun and the sheer joy of white pockets of frost contrasting with brightly coloured sun warmed grass and winter crops. Invigorating and mood enhancing.
Still -1, the black car has remained white all day in the shade and will be horrid to clear at 06:45 in the forecasted freezing fog but today, at least, the sun shone and for a few hours all felt right with the world.

Sun hasn’t yet broken through the heavy mist. Hard frost and currently -3

Is this similar to yesterday’s GFS Snowicane that was um politely disregarded as unlikely? I’m beginning to hope those of you, who are far more knowledgeable than me (99.9%), will also politely disregard the likelihood and severity of this actually happening - meant to be at a public meeting doing a presentation in the evening

Happy Hogmanay to all - here’s to 2019’s frisky cough free calves, returning geese, Costa Lochgelly’s Husband of the Year needing to dig out the snow drifts, Mistyqueen’s house staying in one piece, Hairy Celt getting more than a bit of pish falling on his wood pile and all the happiness possible for everyone.
Best wishes from the 13 year old nw veteran in temporary exile down south

Oh my goodness!
The sun is out Glorious technicolour has resumed. How lovely with a current temp of 10C and a walk with my dog - or is that heresy to say lovely when so may are desperately seeking snow? *steps quietly out of the room*
Happy 2019 everyone - may the snow Gods smile upon this little island of ours.

Dear Knocker and phil nw,
Thank you so much for the regular informative posts and the time obviously taken to provide such an excellent analysis with the detailed graphics. This is my first port of call every day and I’ve learned so much from the way your updates are presented.
In my strange little head I always think of this as the Sidney Serenity Short range Sanity Sanctuary, not just in weather model terms but as a therapeutic short term fix when I stray into The Other Places..
I do hope your incredible commitment continues through 2019 Knocker - we are very lucky you’ve invested so much time and effort for us. Thank you and best wishes for a happy 2019.

As ever knocker thank you for your detailed input here. As I'm about to go off grid to a small cottage literally on the Norfolk coast I've been keeping an eye on the models, just in case there was any risk of a north sea storm surge in the next few days - which would affect the little place I'm staying in (particularly the low lying little exit road inland). Feel better having read your posts!

Lovely house there.
Sadly, our landlords informed us yesterday that they are going to have to sell the house so we will have to move by January. Been here 4 and a half years and this was their retirement income. They were happy for us to live here forever but due to unforseen circumstances they have to sell. They are almost as gutted as we are. They said we are the best tenants they could have hoped for and offered us first refusal on buying it. I bought a lottery ticket last night.... (£550,000 market value...) Didn't win... Sad really, we love the house and we couldn't have wished for better landlords. They've even been here for barbecues in the summer. If we do have an epic winter, we could be moving in the middle of it. Not quite sure where though, there aren't many properties around here which suit our needs within our budget.
But hey, $#/! happens, that's life...
So sorry about your news bobbydog, that must be turning your life over hugely. Really hope you can find somewhere suitable that you like and meets your budget. Just wondering why your landlord hasn’t given you the six months notice you’re entitled to?
Nice sunset yesterday.

Arrived home from work an hour ago and have secured and/or taken in garden furniture - so hopefully nothing flying into conservatory in the middle of the night. Wind has significantly increased in the last hour, SSW gusting 37 and only going to get stronger until peaking early tomorrow.
Glad I’m not in the office tomo as the route in and car park is right in the middle of a forest, where ex US listening/secret weirdo base operated from. Yesterday branches were down and I wouldn’t want to push my luck that nothing lands on the car park again

It has rained from 11am through to 15:00, then bright sun which I missed sitting out in as am defrosting the freezer. Rain started 15 minutes and have two loud thunder rumbles. Not forecasted and unexpected but nice to hear. Currently sunny and raining.
-
First ‘proper’ rain since early May, other than 3 minute shower on 26 May and a 5 minute downpour on Sunday 29 July. Puddles on pavements splash splash, splish splosh. Happy happy except big puppy Labrador. Who took one look at the rain, looked up at me, with his acquired Princess Di heartbroken gaze, and got into his bed.
A less technical update tomorrow

So glad to see the models have swung back around no rain for our region on Saturday, I’m getting married in the afternoon outside so have been watching each run behind the sofa like it’s winter all over again!
Heavy shower just started here now
Congratulations Lewis, hope your special day with outside ceremony is memorable for all the right reasons - best wishes for Saturday’s weather

I just spent 10 minutes dancing in the garden in my undies in the 'rain'.
The over head airplanes adding that little bit extra.
next door shut their patio doors.
Haha was that why the overhead planes seemed to bank in an unusual way this evening? How much rain did you get you lucky lady yet so close to me here in Drysville. Not a spot just horribly humid.

Wow, it’s only 15c here with a NNE of 8/13. Feeling surprisingly chilly after last night and the sticky, oppressive humidity for most of the day. Hopefully will get some sleep tonight.
