  1. Have a feeling about September being the best Summer/Autumn month so August CET for me will be 16.3c)
  2. Unfortunately -depending on whether you like cold winters it was the other way round, the summer of 1947 followed a very cold record breaking winter . The winter of 1947/48 was very mild.
  3. London wont flood but if this was spring I would be concerned. Certainly driving back from work the rain is heavy and the roads are becoming very waterlogged. The South East has missed most of the really heavy rain that Central England has received, but tonight could be the wettest for some time in the South East. By tomorrow if this keeps up there may well have been 40mm of rain . Average up to 250% rainfall for July. <_<
  4. A bit harsh in my humble opinion. There is great a housing shortage in the South East and not all people are rich and affluent in the South. Some of the most deprived areas in the country are in Inner London. Most of London is built on flood plains including Downing Street many years ago. Since the building of council houses has almost ceased people who cannot afford a Mortgage are desperate for accommodation . Apparently 10% of buildings in the UK are built on Flood Plains going back 300 years. The rainfall that has fallen in the last three months has broken all records, so the accumulation of water is unprecedented. The trouble with the Thames is it is tidal and has a lot of contributories that add to the problem. London has flooded many times before with great loss of life.
  5. Torrential Rain and Thunder in Bromley Kent. Switched the office lights off and its pitch black apart from the computer screen.
  6. The Weather, dont you just love it . Last year at this time, Bewl Water was 65% full, now its 100% and it will take something of a major drought to affect that. Nature once again does its balancing act. Who knows, a couple of major volcano eruptions and even the temperature might balance out again and those sun spots work in our favour. The temps may improve over the next few days, but a few clear nights could bring the CET down . My prediction 15.6 July CET :o
  7. Hi Mr Data This a paragraph from one of the most detailed Weather Books ever written its called London Weather by JH Brazell so being a Southerner its of most interest to me (Bought from London Weather Centre Holburn 30 years ago. )_I love the North I really do. February 1948. Heavy snow ,with much drifting, fell in the London area during 20-22 February. Biggin Hill had 14in(35cm)of snow Wilmington (Kent) over 11 in and Croydon 10 in and there were drifts of 3-4 ft in Hampstead. This snow-storm was comparable with any experienced during the severe winter of 1946/47. The temps stayed below max of 2c from 20th Feb to 25th
  8. Hi Folks At least 4ins (11cm) and snowing hard high up on the Downs
  9. Hi folks At least 4ins at Biggin Hill and still snowing quite hard
  10. Hi John Should of added young veteran. Who would be a professional forecaster or amatuer at the moment its a no win situation. If they get right there doing there job so no special praise if they get it wrong there will be nothing but scorn. It will be good for some of the younger members to experience what happened a lot more during the 60/70/80 if the snow does arrive. Regards Charlton north-downs
  11. Hi Folks Being a bit of a veteran on weather events - 1963 79 81 I must say this does look very interesting and temps here in the South East are dropping like a stone now down to freezing and if this carries on it could be -4c or -5c before the weather front bringing moist air hits the South. Just wondering in the past the forecast has often been for the temps to rise the next day and melt the snow- only for a freeze to occur for the next week or so, maybe Rogers forecast is not too way off the mark. regards Charlton North Downs.
  12. Hi Folks The BBC were saying that that snow would turn to rain in the South but this morning they are saying it will only turn to rain on the South Coast. The London area and Midlands should get at least 10cms this could be a 36 hour snow event for some meaning it will be white. Looking beyond the weekend things could again turn colder. Biggin Hill was -7.9c and the valley even colder so the ground is cold- being over 630ft Im looking for a major snow event with a day off with the kids as the schools will be shut- 15cms min. regards Charlton-North Downs
  13. Hi Folks Biggin Hill had a min -7.9c as I left for work it was -6.1c coldest night for several years , the valley will be even colder. The temp guage is next to an open field although sheltered. At over 600ft Im hoping for some decent snow tonight and even the BBC are saying max of 1c for Biggin Hill tomorrow so I might have tomorrow off as Im sure the kids will. Might get a 36 hour snow event meaning it will be white for that time.
  14. Hi Folks Hoping to get some snow on Thursday and was wondering as we are 635ft on the North Downs 19 miles south of central London would the snow stay as snow rather that the forcasted snow turning to rain. Has done in the past but this is more marginal. Anyone know the what the Dam line needs to be. Regards Charlton North Downs
  15. Hi Folks Woke up to a good covering 5cm(winter wonderland) just sad that I did'nt see it falling as thats the bit I love . My teenage kids were very excited and walked to school for a change. Looking out of the office window in Bromley and light snow is falling hope it gets heavier, and tonight who knows we could get lucky.
  16. Hi Folks When is the last time we have a had any descent snow over most of the Uk, I cannot remember must 1985 although 1987 was fantastic for the South East .On a selfish note I look forward to late Feb/March as Biggin Hill and the North Downs over 600ft get quite a few snow events more than any time in January for the last 10 winters, and because snow which settles lowers the temps we can have Ice days in March where as places a lot lower can be 4c warmer with rain. Roll on March maybe the only month that almost every year brings some snow to higher ground .Last time a March without snow was 1998/99.
  17. Hi Mr Data Many thanks again The poem sums up perfectly how I feel about snow and I think a lot of people dont mind fresh snowfall and the problems it can cause(Breaks up the routine) At least the weather has amore wintry fell about it at the moment(It was -2.5c this morning in Biggin Hill)
  18. Very foggy and cold -1c at 8.30am and thick ice on the cars Biggin Hill much foggier than Bromley Temp in Bromley 3.5c and grey
  19. Hi Mr Data Thanks again The snow arrived Christmas Day evening and there was also thunder and lightning around midnight . Over the hills there was agood 20cms and where I lived there was about 15cm and it lasted almost the twelve days of Christmas in parts. A fantastic event for a 14 year old, and probably the best Christmas weather since 1938 which when reading the description in a weather book would be hard to beat with snow from the 19th Dec right up to the 27th .
  20. Parts of the South East especially where I live has had for the last three months above average rainfall and rivers and ponds have filled nicely. Friends came down from Hutton Cranswick for a couple of days and were surprised how much rainfall we have had, I think some parts of Eastern England are missing all this rain. Agree still need plenty more rain to fill the underground water tables Regards charlton north-downs
  21. Looking out of my office window in Bromley Kent the sky has gone black and rain is teeming down and there is thunder and lightning . Temps have fallen from 10c to 5.5c -Very heavy winds and hail now. <_<
  22. Hi Folks On the beeb this morning the weather forcaster said last night in the South the December record was broken at 14c .Probably misheard as I was half listening to the cricket. Fully converted believer in Global warming although Ive been in denial To think way back in 1986 I persuaded my wife to move to Biggin Hill because people told me you can often get snowed in because it so high up -since then only twice.last time 16 years ago.
