Finally temps this morning are lower than they have been for 4 days at 1.8c the wind feels colder. BBC weather forecaster this morning said that Monday could be interesting. Hoping for some snow showers to hit the North Downs later today and all should be of snow not sleet. Kent and E Anglia should be in the firing line over the next few days and I'm hoping NWKent can do well from showers working there way inland. At the ripe old age of 53 I have finally been treated to a weather station and want to start taking readings from the 1st Jan 2010 . For the last 3 days we have had a maximum temps of 3.8c and a minimum 2.8c. A mixture of rain and sleet has been almost constant . My question is over this period the Dewpoint has always read a fraction below actual temps is this correct because of the conditions and the instructions state that pressure should be set to a threshold of 3hpa but areas where there is frequent changes in air pressure should be 4hpa. Biggin Hill is over 650ft does that make a difference

General Model Output Discussion:
charlton north-downs replied to Methuselah's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
We may have to wait for snow but the very cold temps are coming. People seem to forget we in the South had seven year of snow less winters in the seventies(1970 had a fantastic White Christmas then I cant remember any snow until New Years Eve 1978 with a max of -2c and heavy drifting snow overnight then the next day a max of -5c in Central London the countryside temps were much lower. Winters in the sixties/seventies and eighties were not constantly cold and a few were very mild. The period coming up is surely (please not the kiss of death) going to be the coldest since February 1991. Steve Muir prediction of very low temps are not unrealistic. Enjoy and drive carefully. In the sixties we just put on a another layer of clothing as we scraped the ice off, from inside the windows. -
Hi Charlton Kerry -Have a great holiday -Sympathise with you about worrying-My son has started a new job and twice he has been unable to get to work because Westerham Hill has been closed due to ice and snow and accidents. Its a catch 22 situation I love snow but worry about the disruption it causes Come on you Reds-Promotion a must this season Tomorrow night I think rain will turn to snow over high ground on the Downs as the front moves further North then snow in North London up to the Midlands .Snow for the South on Thursday as the front backtracks with colder air. . This weather does remind me of the Eighties when there were so many marginal snow events along with real snow events.

Actually there are a lot private flights that the so called stars use to miss the paparazzi. And there are a few chartered flights . The snow now is heavier than Feb 09 . My wife and daughter have gone to Bluewater and I have phones them to say come back now. Westerham Hill -Highest point in Kent will be closed if this carries on. Seems like an inch of snow in 30 mins complete white-out

Heavy wet snow in Biggin Hill 20 miles South of London on the North Downs -Height making it less marginal .New weather station is not working as it now say +1c and dew point has dropped to 0.7 . This is so marginal and I might just preserve the snow in the back garden. If this had been snow from this morning we would have at least another 4ins of snow, Edit Heavy snow now falling temps are falling fast -starting to settle on cars.

Damn my crisp and even snow is disappearing as the temps has gone upto 1.8c above freezing for the first time in 4 days. Oh well its sleeting/wet snow which is no good to anyone at the moment. Temps has fallen. Actually temp is now no 0.7c dew point is 0.7c trying hard to snow . What the min dew point for snow.

Today's Weather And General Chat

Temps are falling in the South East. Rural Kent down to -9c from -6c Dry arctic or continental air Lovely -
We were down to -7c last night in Biggin Hill after an ice day yesterday.I really thought we were in for a bit more snow but we only got a few flakes. The snow is very dry and the 4/5 inches of snow has not melted and the trees are still covered with a thick layer making them look almost alpine that hasn't happened since February 1991. The air is dry and its a really a beautiful morning making me realise why I like dry snow and crisp alpine blue skies. The down side to all this is it casuses disruption and I feel very sorry for the people trapped on the Eurostar trains. More snow to night and that front could become stationery over the South East. Boxing Day 1962 a Northerly gave rain and snow to parts of Scotland and as it worked its way down the country it stalled over Southern England and gave 12 ins of dry crisp snow which more or less stayed for 3 months with regular small top-ups. The weather forecaster did say that Monday could be a problem for the South with heavy rain/sleet and snow. The BBC have 1c max-3c min for Biggin Hill with heavy snow. any thoughts on this .
