  1. One is the actual ash, the other is the 50 or 60 mile safety zone around the ash area. On loking again, maybe that was for a different ash map.
  2. Norwegian meto office animated ash maps: http://www.yr.no/verkart/1.7103434 The Norwegian text at the top says the calculations have been made using the institute's SNAP model. SNAP (Severe Nuclear Accident Program) is a meteorological dispersion model for radioactive fallout.
  3. I love the way the ash cloud seems to be taking a ride on the white cloud below it - it's like a big white fluffy mattress.
  4. Here you go - recent update:@ Eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland Assessment - 10 May 2010 17:30 The hight of the grey or light gray eruption plume is ~5 km (17,000 ft) but sometimes it shoots up to 6 km (20,000 ft). It is heading southeast but low level winds are variable. Ashfall was reported to have been almost continuous during the last 24 hours at farms Drangshlíð and Skarðshlíð just south of the eruption. The ash is rather coarse, the grain size is estimated by the farmers to be ~2-3 mm in diameter. The crater is getting higher. Lava flow is low and not visible on cameras. In the afternoon there was a slight increase in explosive activity, which resulted in a higher plume for a while. Seismic tremor has been similar for the past 3 days. A sequence of earthquakes started around 11:00 this morning at depths of 18 - 20 km and magnitude range 1 - 2. The earthquake sequence this morning indicates that magma is still flowing in from the mantle. Presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end.
  5. I think we are back to the two different coloured plumes - ash & steam. See images below.
  6. Somehow I posted the wrong link earlier - I was wowing at this: http://hraun.vedur.is/ja/Katla2009/stodvaplott.html The large & sudden increase in harmonic tremor.
  7. This is interesting Recent EQs: http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/ Geological map of Iceland, showing mid atlantic ridge (the bit Iceland is diverging from): http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/dynamic/graphics/Fig16.gif Spot the pattern? BTW, as of today, and up to now, there have been 78 EQs in Iceland as a whole. 66 of them since 9:49am. 51 of those were in the Eyja area since 10:05am. Usually the only warning you get from Katla is aa EQ swarm shortly before liftoff (I'm talking hours here). Not a problem - it's nice to be able to indulge an interest without people rolling their eyes and changing the subject!
  8. Oo, Ryanair have admitted finding ash in their engines. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8672663.stm
  9. Up to 38 EQs now. In 1 hour. Edit: Another 3 in the last 10 mins to add to the tally. See the Helicorder: http://www.simnet.is/jonfr500/earthquake/tremoren.htm
  10. Double eruption hot spots...? Also, do we have a new lava flow showing up top? Also, another EQ swarm: http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull both deep & shallow. 22 in all so far.
  11. She doesn't look like she is 'easing off' to me. She sure wasn't taking it easy last night. Nice Modis image: http://www3.hi.is/~ij/aska/201005091419_rgb.jpg Meris shot from 2 days ago: http://esv.blog.is/users/da/esv/img/meris080520101242.png
  12. Good ones are hard to find! The white flash is possibly the second vent (some people on Eruptions saw it as well but didn't have time to get a screen cap). Anyway, I have work tomorrow and have to get up at 7am so I;m off now - enjoy your viewing!
  13. Not a problem for me anymore. Mine found a new toy to play with last year. I currently have a cat curled up on either side on me on the sofa - much better IMO.
  14. 3 recent quakes... http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull/ I love it and this Lady is no where near done yet! Look at the height of the ash cloud now...
  15. Couple of pics for those who weren't able to stay up to see it. One has a circle drawn on it - showing the glow of the lava flow I think. Another to show the height of the flames we can see on the Hvol cam. Note on Eruptions: 'EQ swarm commensing at Eyjaf, NW to SE axis. Magma movement to the South. Civil Defense should be on their toes tonight.' & and 'Deep magma movement indicated by EQ depth >20 Km. Something is up, IMO.'
  16. Take a look at the Thoro cam for drama - lots of lavabombs there now the cloud has cleared away.
  17. I thkn they get up there, then ring home or friends to go look at them on the webcam. Sad really... LOL they look like sad clowns on the FLIR cam - lips & eyes are whiter than the rest of their face. Look silly... Woa, Hvol is off the top of the field of view now. http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-hvolsvelli/
  18. Interesting pics & comments from someone who was up there yesterday. http://gummiey.posterous.com/
  19. One way to bury the news.... Instead we get this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8671372.stm Same thing with that air intake blockage on a cockpit flight recording that suddently became an air conditioning fault once the airline spokemans got involved.
  20. Nice plume now showing on the Hvol cam: http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-hvolsvelli/ Darn, beaten to it. A SE windshift will aim it at us. FLIR cam - http://eldgos.mila.is/eyjafjallajokull-fra-thorolfsfelli/ hot part of plume getting very high now. From the Eruptions site: 'That would be the latest injection of fresh magma into the crater vent system, indicated by the EQs rising from deep to shallow of the past day, the second such injection in a week'
  21. I saw this on the Eruptions site earlier: 'The SDR's (Service Difficulty Reports) have jumped across the board for all of the trans-atlantic hoppers and quite a bit for the regionals. Conductive ash in actuator boxes, acidic in air systems. The biggest write ups right now are for air systems (big surprise) but engine abrasion is being noted. Not terribly so just jet but one blade on a Trent costs about 10,000 bucks and more than a lot of money to replace. A lot of engine joint point erosion and corrosion is also being noted. They can blend it out and balance it for the better part, but if this doesnt stop soon they will simply because of the economics of being in business. '
